Work Text:

It was abit too late for Chiaki’s liking.

The sun has travelled far away across the opposite of the planet to be nowhere seen in Japan, and the only thing in substitute is the spherical shining moon. Hanging stars that could probably explode anytime or maybe the next hundreds of years or so, up in the sky. Chiaki had seen this view too many times from the window nearby in the broadcasting room he would use, from all the times he stayed back in school to binge watch episodes of his favorite hero show. Losing track of time, time and time again.

Despite the habit, he’d scold himself for staying up so late because he was afraid to wreck his immune system by sleeping late all the time and become what he used to be, the sickly boy who couldn’t do anything and worry people. Ironically that wasn’t the worst reason, the other was because he was simply scared. The long creepy dark hallways with many doors of classrooms for some kind of ghost to come out of, or suck him in and put him in some kind of dimension and never return back to Earth. The eerie quietness that lingers through and throughout the wind that flows perfectly down his spine.

“It’s fine, I’m fine! Ghosts don’t exist Chiaki, you can do this!!” He told himself unnecessarily out loud. He never took note of the fact that his loud voice could potentially attract the ghosts. The route and experience was way too familiar to him and nothing ever happened to him, yet he could never shoo away the fear despite the uncountable amounts he did this.

Of course with his many confident boosts he said out loud for a while, he managed to calm down a slight bit and follow a loud proud laugh after that heroes would do after defeating an enemy with no sweat.

“I found youuuu~~ Chi-a-ki.”

“GYEEEEHH??!!”

The sudden whisper coming from wherever it could be made him stumble with his balance, almost making him fall.

Clutching his bag bringing it nearer to his body and leaning towards a wall with his legs visibly shaking and eyes probably on the verge of tears of fear, he tried to respond.

“I-I-I-is this a g-g-ghost??!!”

The “ghost” probably thought his whole reaction was so animatic and exaggerated like a Disney cartoon that it was funny and laughed in response.

“Ufufufuu….”

“EEEEEEE— I-I-is this my punishment?! Uuuuu!! I’m sorry for st-staying up so late!! Please forgive me God!!”

Looking around frantically, he tried to actually find where the voice was coming from this time and started walking very slowly. Like very slowly. Suddenly he spotted a hand silhouette gripping onto a pillar in front of him from behind. He squealed and went back to lean against the wall trying to avoid the creature as it slowly revealed itself with an evil laugh.

“Ufufufufu…..

His legs gave up on him as he started squatting, squinting his eyes and lips trembling, prepared for his doom.

Boo!~”

Slowly he opens an eye to see the blue haired figure halfly shown from the pillar.

“Kanata!”

He quickly stood up and rushed to hug him.

“Kanata… don’t do that ever again!! I almost cried…” he sobbed on Kanata’s shoulder.

“Ufufu~ Chiaki is such a ‘scaredy-cat’. It’s ‘cute’ fufu~” The sudden hug surprised him and in response, he just patted his back.

They stayed there for a few seconds until Chiaki stopped shaking and calmed down his breathing. Leaving the hug, they both looked at each other dumbfounded.

“By the way Kanata, what are you doing here so late in the school by the way?”

It was when his mouth turned into an ‘o’ shape and widened his eyes, as if he remembered something.

“Tomorrow is Chiaki’s ‘birthday‘ right?~”

“Ahh, yes it is! Haha thank you Kanata for remembering!!” He was taken back since Chiaki doesn’t have a lot of friends in the school and no one other than his family usually celebrates his birthday. And it was at that moment he realized he never told Kanata his birthday. Kanata realized this and grabbed his hand before he could question anything and proceeded to forcefully drag him happily to who knows where.

After a while, Kanata lets go of Chiaki’s hand and lets him rest a bit as he pants after all that walking. Despite Kanata disliking being on land, he was surprisingly very fast at walking when he wanted to be. He exhaled a deep breath and lifted his head to look around where he ended up. It was the pool.

The pool where they first met.

It wasn't completely clean because of the few leaves the trees had dropped, yet it was glistening the moonlight elegantly as water crashed onto each other making small waves due to the wind. The moan of the soft cricket noises carried by the night wind. Without words, Kanata walked towards the water and sat down by the pool with his legs in it. He looked back to his fellow unit mate and met his eyes, his bright red eyes shining the night looking back at the blue haired boy. And so without words, the brunette walks towards the pool, taking his shoes off and greeting the waters with his legs, sitting beside Kanata.

No words were spoken, muttered nor mumbled. They both looked at the uncountable stars laying lazy on the dark sky. It was peaceful. Very peaceful. Only after a while, Kanata turned his head to admire the brunette. The way his scarlet burning eyes sparkle over those stars. Thinking about how maybe, they, Ryuuseitai can grow to be like the sky with many stars. Maybe, with just the two of them, they could eventually get as many fans as the stars. Maybe they could help people shine even in the dark. Maybe they can be heroes. It was a childish dream, he knew this all along, but he never cared about the maturity of the thought.

Such passion and ambition the boy carried onto him, cracking a smile as he relaxed his shoulders. Kanata had realize this was probably what he was thinking, and stared in awe into his eyes.

It took him a while but after getting lost in track of his thoughts, he felt Kanata’s stare and looked at him, barely moving his head. (Chiaki with glasses side eyeing bye that’s so hot). Kanata realizing the eye contact was made, he destroyed the moment of silence and the scene where they could’ve stared quietly at each other (knowing chiaki would destroy the scene worse), he tilted his head and a smirk grew slightly at the edge of his lips.

“Chiaki, it’s almost your ‘birthday’ right? In ‘birthdays’, people must make a wish.”

A glint of panic came in his eyes and turned his head to face Kanata with nervous eyes trying to avoid eye contact.

“Aha— Y-yes that’s true that you should make a wish on your birthday but it’s not my birthday yet soo-“ he excused and shrugs his shoulders awkwardly.

“But it’s already 11:56 p.m is it not? And if you want, I can ‘summon’ a cake for you~”

Surprised, he took out his phone from his jacket pocket and checked, it really is 11:56.. Goosebumps emerged as he faced Kanata with disbelief and in awe, and looked back at his phone which showed 11:57 now. Kanata leaned nearer to the brunette and rested his chin on his shoulders to glance at the contents of his phone.

“Oh it’s three more minutes until Chiaki’s ‘birthday’~ Think of a wish quickly! fufu~”” he teased.

“Aha Kanata..” he sighed in defeat. This was a situation he could not avoid. He didn’t want to wish to Kanata even after everything had passed. The blue haired boy’s weight left his shoulders, shifted his weight into his own shoulder, playfully swung his legs and kicked the waters and eagerly looked at him waiting for an answer knowing his victory.

“Well if I say my wish out loud, the wish won’t happen so I won’t!” He attempted, trying to seek hope of escaping it.

“But I am a god! Tell me your wish and I shall grant it~”

“Kanata, you are not god. You are a human, okay?”

“Chiaki is a ‘cheater’! Trying to change the ‘subject’ so I cannot grant your wish. Hmph!” He pouts and crosses his arms.

The brunette looked back at him, stretched his head back to sigh and looked back at him again.

“Fine, fine you win. I’ll tell you what my wish is for my birthday this year as your friend, not as your follower. So you aren’t allowed to grant it as ‘god’”

“Not fair, I am god! Chiaki is so ‘stubborn’.

But if Chiaki will only be with me as a ‘friend’ and not god, then I’ll ‘try my best’ to become his friend because ‘I’ do not want to be ‘lonely’ again.”

“Thank you, Kanata.”

Perhaps the stars slowly disappeared and unnoticeably, the cricket noises died down and it was now a quiet calm ringing of the night. No one would immediately hear it and nobody cared to hear it anyways. Nothing had really changed but it was now a new day.

The time had hit 12 o’clock and it was his birthday.

“I wish for my birthday that I can continue to be with you, so I can become a hero.”

I love Ryuuseitai sm <3
