Work Text:

English. This was the class where Tsukasa often grew especially bored, the need to pay attention completely evaporating as the teacher’s voice faded to white noise. His gaze drifts out of the window, to white fluffy clouds and birds frolicking in an ocean of blue. He would much rather be a bird than stuck in class, the skin of his face being pulled back by the winds as he soared higher and higher. He can almost imagine the reeling feeling when a finger taps his side, bringing him back to the lesson, his teacher’s voice slowly coming back into focus.

He turns his head behind his back, searching for the person who forced him from his daydreaming. Hazel eyes meet a far too familiar set of golden ones, a desk behind him in the isle next to his. He sends Rui a confused look, eyebrows furrowing as his troupe member only responds with his familiar Cheshire grin. ”What do you want” Tsukasa mouths, and Rui holds up a hastily folded paper between his fingers. He takes a cautious look to the front of the room- the teacher much too oblivious and self absorbed in her lesson to care- and holds it out to him. Tsukasa sends him a glare, making sure Rui knows of his frustration with his rebellious actions before snatching it from his hands and turning forward once more. Did Rui not care about getting in trouble?! What was so important that he had to tell him now?!

Tsukasa couldn’t stay mad for very long, his fingers already fumbling to open the slip of paper to read the contents, curiosity thumping through his chest.

The contents were…. Predictable. “Hi” was written in Rui’s signature smooth cursive writing, often more frustrating when they would share show ideas. He could never read his handwriting when it was all jumbled together incoherently.

With a sigh, Tsukasa scribbled a reply, hastily folding the paper again and turning to look at Rui.

Rui was leaning back in his chair, hands resting behind his head and a pencil perfectly balanced between his pursed lips and nose. He almost fell backward when Tsukasa flapped the paper around, glaring at him as he struggled to sit properly. Wide golden eyes darted to the paper, sly painted nails grabbing it after sending a few cautious looks to the front of the room. His excitement was obvious, and Tsukasa couldn’t help but roll his eyes at Rui’s antics. He really acted like a child…

It didn’t take long for him to finish scribbling out a reply, and sneakily passing it back to Tsukasa.

“Hi”

“Hello ☆!”

“What are you doing for lunch?”

The blonde fought back a smile, doodling a tiny picture of him and Rui eating lunch together. Tsukasa’s circle hand was holding a green vegetable at the end of his chopsticks, reaching over to the doodle of Rui, who was squeezing his eyes shut with a wide frown. He giggled to himself as he added some last crayon streaks to Rui’s hair, before passing it back.

Tsukasa propped his face on his arm, stealthily looking behind him to catch a glimpse of Rui’s smirk, then falling to a frown. He quickly met Tsukasa’s eye, shaking his head thoughtfully before chuckling and adding to the page.

They continued like this for awhile, Rui adding a rocket strapped to the doodle of Tsukasa, while the blonde would retaliate with more vegetables. Soon roaches and other nasty bugs joined Tsukasa’s part of the page, a war sprouting between the two criminally bored teens.

Feeling the end of class draw near, Rui decided to take the bullet and draw a small white flag, signalling retreat. It followed with another cursive note just under, setting Tsukasa’s heart ablaze.

“I’ll look forward to a vegetable free lunch with you, my star<3”

Tsukasa snickered at this, finally drawing the attention of their teacher.

“Tenma, what’s so funny? Do you have something you would like to share with the class?” The blonde froze, feeling the eyes of his peers slowly settle on him. “No, ma’am! Apologies” he squirmed to hide the piece of paper, folding it hastily to hide under his palm. The teacher quickly moved on, blabbing about how listening affected their grades and would jeopardize their midterm marks. When he deemed it safe, he turned to send Rui a glare, though Rui looked anything but apologetic.

Tsukasa decided that their lunch wouldn’t be as vegetable-free as Rui had hoped.
