Work Text:
Alec is trying to figure out what to get Magnus for their anniversary when the answer falls from the sky—quite literally.
He's wrapped in Magnus' arms, a soft blanket draped over the both of them, watching a shooting stars streak across the sky. He feels a meteor hit the earth, too far to be dangerous to them but close enough that Alec can feel the vibrations.
"Oh," he breathes, as the answer he's been searching for the last few months pops into his brain. Of course. He wants to get something for Magnus unlike anything the centuries old warlock has been given before, and now he knows exactly what.
Magnus hums, curling his arms a little tighter around Alec's waist. "Did you say something?"
"No. I was just thinking."
"About work?"
"About you, actually."
"Really?" Magnus sounds delighted by his statement. "What about me?"
"It's a surprise," Alec murmurs, watching another shooting star as it burns a trail of white across the dark, cloudless night. He wonders if this is what it looks like when an angel falls.
"You know how I feel about surprises."
Alec can't resist rolling his eyes, knowing Magnus won't see it with the way they're sitting. "You'll find out soon enough."
Magnus makes a little noise of discontent before Alec turns in his arms and sets about distracting Magnus with kisses.
A week later, Alec ventures out to where he'd seen the meteor hit, alone. He finds it after a bit of searching and digs up a sample of space rock.
Then he recruits Izzy’s help. As the Institute's weapons master, she's the most equipped to help with his task.
As expected, she's thrilled. She grins at Alec as she pulls out the safety gear they'll need to wear, "This is so creative, Alec. Magnus is going to love it."
With Izzy's help, Alec finishes the gifts just in time for his second anniversary with Magnus. He tucks them into rune-enforced boxes that Magnus shouldn't be able to use his magic to pry into and spoil the surprise. Not that Alec thinks he would, but it's best to be prepared.
They share a lovely dinner at a restaurant in Portugal before portaling back to the loft. It takes serious effort for Alec to extract himself from Magnus' embrace and hungry kisses, but he manages it by focusing on Magnus' gift.
"I have something for you," Alec breathes as Magnus pushes him against one of the columns in their living room.
Magnus raises an eyebrow and rolls his hips meaningfully against Alec’s, "I have something for you as well."
Alec huffs a laugh, ignoring the arousal that rushes through him despite the cheesy line. "Do you want your gift or not?"
"I thought you were my gift," Magnus murmurs, pressing his lips to Alec's jaw. It's nearly enough to make Alec forget his plans altogether.
"You can have me after."
"Is that a promise?"
Alec nods, kissing Magnus once more, slow and lingering, before moving away. He'd hidden the gift boxes away with his shadowhunting gear earlier and moves to retrieve them now.
Magnus follows him to the bedroom, sitting on the bed as Alec pulls out the boxes.
"Which one first?"
Magnus, in true Magnus fashion, decides to choose by playing "eeny meeny miny moe". He ends on the larger box and Alec hands it over, suddenly a little nervous. Magnus always loves his gifts, or at least pretends to, and this is one of his better works, but he's still nervous it might be wrong or not enough or too much.
The wrapping paper is pulled aside and the lid lifted from the box. Magnus inhales sharp enough for Alec to hear. "This is beautiful."
He lifts the sword with careful fingers, showing off the nearly black blade. It glints under the bedroom light, showing off the runes inscribed along it.
The sword isn't anything spectacular, Alec hadn't the time or skill to make it truly special, but the unique material makes it look more interesting.
"I can't imagine the Clave was pleased with you wanting to gift your warlock husband a runed sword."
"What the Clave doesn't know won't hurt them."
"What a rebel," Magnus murmurs, carefully leaning over the sword to peck Alec's lips. Then he moves back to study it again. "What is it made of? Ive never seen a sword like this."
Good. That's what Alec had been hoping for. He had wanted to give Magnus a gift unlike anything else on earth. "Izzy helped me make it out of a meteorite that hit recently."
"It's made out of space rock?" Magnus sounds a little bit awed and that fills Alec with glee. He'd chosen correctly then.
"Yeah. Open the other one."
Magnus gives the sword one last appreciative look before setting it aside to open the smaller box.
This one is simpler, two pieces of dark jewelry. The first is a beaded bracelet, the other a carefully polished ring, both made of the same material as the sword. On the inside band of the ring are two runes, the same two inscribed on their wedding rings: wedded union and love.
"Oh, Alexander. You made these?" Magnus asks, reverently brushing his fingers over the rune on the bracelet.
Alec moves to sit beside him on the bed. "Do you like them?"
"I love them." Magnus punctuates his words by sliding the bracelet onto his left wrist and the ring onto his right thumb. "How did you..."
"With Izzy's help. And a lot of patience."
"You gave me a star," Magnus murmurs, looking suspiciously teary.
He looks too happy to be upset though so Alec just kisses his cheek. "If anyone deserves to hold a star in their hands, it's you."
Magnus kisses him soundly, and Alec realizes he has no idea how he's going to top this next year. But he has 365 days to figure it out so right now he lets himself simply enjoy kissing his husband.
