Work Text:

Brown and orange leaves fell from the trees and scattered across the ground, blowing around haphazardly amongst the chilly autumn breeze. It was cold outside, but in the comfortable way where you could sit out there wrapped in a nice, big, fluffy blanket and be cozy. Perfect weather for a party!

Jinx was still in her pajamas, sticking her head out of her bedroom window to feel the mild bite of the cool air hitting her skin. Her cheeks and nose quickly reddened from the temperature, giving her pale complexion a rosy blush. It was a rarity for her to feel totally calm and happy, but today is special. Today is her birthday, and she is going to get to spend it with all of her loved ones. And there is gonna be a cake! Today is going to be a good day!

“You’re gonna catch a cold real fast if you keep that up,” a voice speaking up from the doorway pulled the bluenette out of her head.

She turned around to see her sister standing there, gift bag in hand. A big, giddy smile spread across her face, “If I get sick, does that mean I can have a second cake to make up for it? Ya know, like one that says ‘happy birthday,’ and another that says ‘get well soon!’”

Vi chuckled and shook her head, “I’ll get you a second cake if you really want another one that bad, but shut that window already and come open your present.”

That’s all the convincing she needed! Jinx obediently did as she was told, turning back around to close the window before skipping over to Vi. Bright pink eyes glanced down to the sparkly blue gift bag, tilting her head ever so slightly. “I’m really allowed to open it right now?”

Vi smiled warmly and held the bag out to her, “Yeah! It’s no fun if you gotta wait all day for it. Besides, I know it’s kind of overwhelming having to open all your presents up at once in front of everybody, so... I figured I’d give you mine before everyone’s here.”

Jinx took the bag and gave her sister a hug, tight almost to the point of it being a deathgrip of affection. Vi didn’t seem to mind it though, and returned the embrace with a gentle squeeze. When they pulled away, Jinx rushed over to her bed to sit down and rip out all the fancy multicolored paper that was hiding her gift.

There, at the bottom of the bag, was a pastel pink and blue bunny plush with a necklace chained around it. Feeling a sense of awe, she lifted it and held it up in both hands, getting a closer look at the necklace. It was a pink butterfly with tiny white rhinestones covering the wings, hanging from a simple silver cord. The same necklace she used to pass by and see in the window of the jewelry store everyday when she was a little kid, always silently wishing she could have it.

And now she finally does.

She looked back up to her sister, tears welling up in her eyes and blurring her vision. “Vi...” She can’t believe she remembered this.

Vi smiled softly, “Happy birthday, Jinx.”
