Chapter Text
Wayne Munson could not wait until he finally got home so he could finally rest his aching bones, he was getting too old to be working as much as he was but with the ever growing stomach that was his nephew he really didn’t have a choice.
His tired eyes rested on the dark road as his old truck drove down the long trail surrounded by trees. It was almost 2pm when he left and he could already feel himself drift off despite his hard efforts.
It wouldn’t be long before Wayne was finally back into his trailer where he could have a beer and sleep, god he needed sleep.
Wayne thought he saw something amongst the trees but frankly with how tired he was no doubt it was all in his head, this was until something small and faint was almost crawling out to the road.
The small creature was getting closer before Wayne finally realised his car was the one getting closer, quickly he slammed his foot on the breaks, the car erupts into loud screeches before finally coming to a full stop.
“The hell…” he mumbled to himself before exiting the truck finally getting a better look at whatever wandered into the road.
Wayne almost felt his soul leave his body suddenly looking down at a small child with a buzz cut, wearing a hospital gown of all things.
“Dear god… what are you doing out here? Can’t be playing on the road like this!” The child just stared up at him with large brown, and rather confused eyes.
He started scanning his surroundings, maybe their was a parent or any adult close by looking for the kid but the dark woods seemed just as quiet as they normally were. Releasing a deep sigh Wayne turns back to see the small kid walking off to the other side of the road.
“Woah hey! Hey! Hey!” Quickly Wayne chases after them, sweeping them up by their arms just before they manage to reach the tall trees.
Soon enough he placed the small child next to the truck, their face was scrunched and annoyed when they looked up at him.
“Look kid, you’re not just gonna go wandering around the woods like a…” Wayne rubbed his callused hand along his face before taking a deep breath.
“What’s your name kid?” He asks. The small kid just continues to look at him with a empty stare.
“What? You don’t have a name? What do your parents call you? In fact where are you parents? They shouldn’t be letting you wander around at night like this” the kid remained quiet.
Wayne was starting to get irritated, not only was he out in the cold only a short drive away from his bed but there was this poor little thing wandering around with by the looks of things, no one with them.
Almost made steam come out of his ears.
To top it all off the grumbling sound of sudden thunder echoed through the sky. It started raining.
“You gotta be fuckin-“ Wayne hisses, feeling the little wet drops lands on his shoulders and thin hair.
Already the small kid was shivering, their thin gown now about to be soaked.
“Jesus, come on… we’ll go to my trailer and then we can call whoever to come get you” Wayne stated, reaching out for the kid but suddenly the child jumped back, their eyes bigger then before. He could recognise that look anywhere; fear, the poor little thing was scared out of their wits and it broke his heart.
Despite his bad knees, Wayne kneeled down so he was now face to face with the kid, his expression softened which seemed slightly comfort the kid. Slightly.
“It’s okay, I’m not gonna hurt ya I promise, but I’m not leaving you out here” his tone was a lot more gentle as he put out his hand. The little kid merely looked at it with hesitation, their eyes went back fourth from his hand to him before finally their little palm reached for his.
“There we go, come on my trailer is not that far”
“T-trailer?” Their little voice finally spoke out for the first time. Wayne’s eyes almost popped from his head; the little thing was a girl and her voice so timid and quiet.
“Uh, yeah my trailer, we’ll get you some warm clothes, some food… doesn’t that sound good?”
The little girl nodded in response, looks like she was finished talking again. Nodding back Wayne finally led her to his truck helping her inside, and not a moment before the rain poured down like a waterfall.
As he walked toward his door Wayne once again felt the familiar chill of something wondering behind him, but with all the rain he once again he saw nothing.
Shaking it off Wayne jumped back into the truck trying to start it up but just his luck the damn thing wasn’t starting.
“Shit! Of course” he grumbled under his breath, slamming his hands on the steering wheel. Once again he found himself rubbing his tired face ready to just start walking at this point, until suddenly the car was on and working as if nothing was ever wrong.
Wayne stared with absolute shock and confusion racking his brain on how this suddenly happened, slight movement of the little girl pulled him from his trance as he noticed a trail of blood drip from her nose.
“Shit you alright?” Wayne hissed quickly reaching for one of his work rags. Gently he dabbed the rag under her nose cleaning up the mysterious blood. He couldn’t help but think the poor girl might’ve gotten hurt out in the woods, definitely would need to call a doctor when gets back.
Throwing the rag back into its originally spot, Wayne finally started driving once more. If he wasn’t tired before he really was now.
