Rivals Love // Dnf Story (no smut)

Summary:

After George Davidsons divorce from a star NCAA quarterback Nick Thomas, he’s sworn off relationships with athletes. In fact, he’s sworn off relationships altogether. Then he meets the quarterback for the biggest rival of your ex's team at a bookstore, where he is signing copies of his new memoir. He recognizes him from various industry events, and he discovers he's everything your ex never was.

(This is my first book so if anyone has feedback that is totally welcome. Also yes the timeline is a little wonky when its comes to ages and the fact they are in college but I wanted to write about College football cause I know Dream likes it so I thought it would be more relevant lmao)

Notes:

First chapter is a little messy and it will get better as we continue lol. This story is also on Wattpad. Username on there is spagogy21

Chapter 1: CHAPTER 1: Convenient Meeting

Chapter Text

The last box is finally unpacked after 6 months. The small one bedroom apartment has been dimly lit and depressing ever since the final papers were signed. Don’t get me wrong, divorcing Nick was the best decision I have made in a long time, but the empty bed has done a number on my mental health.

6 months of sitting in my apartment with my cat and my best friend Alex and Karl on call over my computer is starting to get boring so I decide to scroll through my social media which I have tried to avoid ever since the very public divorce. As I mindlessly scroll through twitter I see the NCAA posted the new team stats for this year. While seeing Nick's name across the screen leaves a sour taste in my mouth I still scroll through the page to look at his new competition this year. Nick plays for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and their biggest competition is always the Oklahoma Sooners. As I look through the post I realize Oklahoma has a new star quarterback that people say will give Nebraska a run for their money.

"Clay Smith the new star quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners is said to be the next big thing! Sooners coach says Clay might bring Oklahoma to victory this Saturday against their biggest rival the Cornhuskers."

God it would be great to see Nick’s team lose against a rookie quarterback, that might help Nick with his ego problem. I close my phone and set it on my nightstand so I can shut my lights off and finally go to bed at a reasonable hour.

“You really think that Edward is better than Jacob, I can’t believe this I feel betrayed” yells Alex over the phone.

“Alex, I am trying to do work. I can't talk about my opinions on the men of twilight right now” I said as I type on my keyboard.

“George this is very important, Karl you agree with me Jacob is way better than Edward, right?”

“Ugh Alex I don’t care about twilight what I do care about is George’s opinion and this Clay Smith guy.”

“Honestly Karl, I have no opinion on him other than I hope he destroys Nick in the next game cause god I would love to see him lose right about now.”

“Speaking of Nick, we need to get you back in the dating game George, see any guys that interest you?”

“Karl, you know I am done with dating for a while.”

“Come on George you're such a catch you need to get back out there.”

“You guys are distracting me too much. I have a deadline to meet, I will call you guys later.” I say as I disconnect from the call.

Since the divorce I have had to get back to working full time considering I am no longer married to a rich football player anymore. I work as a journalist for a big sports news company, that's how I managed to meet Nick in the first place. Nick was the next big star for the NCAA so my boss asked me to interview him. We hit it off really fast. He was super charming and I instantly fell for him. After finding out he was bisexual I decided I had to shoot my shot. We started dating and everything went great. He proposed to me after our 1 year anniversary and we got married 5 months after the engagement. We definitely rushed into things and that's probably the big reason for the downfall of our relationship. He started getting a lot of media attention and started to turn into a totally different person. 6 months into our marriage I caught him cheating on me with one of the cheerleaders, and I dropped the divorce papers pretty fast after that. Since then I have completely sworn off athletes and men as a whole. I think it's starting to worry Karl and Alex a bit but I think I am better on my own anyways.

After a long day of work I decided I need to find a new book to read as I just recently finished my last read. I grab my wallet and say a quick goodbye to my cat as I walk out of the door. Since we are at the tail end of summer it's still a little hot out but I can tell fall is on its way. It only takes me about 15 minutes to get to the bookstore. I open the door to be surprised by a lineup of people standing in front of a small table. I read the sign Clay Smith book signing. I laugh a little bit at the fact that a rookie quarterback has already managed to not only write a short book but also have a book signing. Then the best idea came into my head, I could buy one of the books and get it signed and send it to Nick. He would most definitely hate that. I walk into the line already giggling at my petty idea. As I slowly make my way to the front I get a closer look at Clay. Huh he isn’t that bad looking, I think to myself. I quickly throw that thought in the garbage remembering my past experience with a football quarterback. I finally get to the front as I am greeted by my ex-husband's new rival.

“Hello, What's your name?” he asks as he takes my book.

“George Davidson.” I reply

“George Davidson? Wait, I know you. You're the sports journalist that just got divorced from the Cornhuskers quarterback.”

“Haha yup that's me, I’m glad that's what I am known for.” I say sarcastically.

“Shoot, no that's not what I meant sorry.” I don’t feel like getting into it with Clay so I just ignore the comment and get back on track.

“Nah that's ok. Do you mind writing good luck Nick on that book for me, I wanna send it to Nick to mess with him.” I say trying to speed up this interaction.

“Haha that's actually pretty funny, I can definitely help you get back at your ex husband.” he says laughing a little

“Sweet thanks! Thought he might wanna read his new rival's book.” I say attempting at trying to hold a normal conversation

“Ha ya of course! Do you want me to say it's from me or you?” he asks

“Say it's from me but sign it if you don’t mind.” I say somewhat nervously, thinking I’m asking a little to much

“No problem!” He says while handing me back the book

“Alright well I will be on my way, good luck on the game on Saturday and make sure to win!” I say as I back away from the table.

“Will do!” He says while smiling

Well that's definitely not what I expected, he was actually kind of sweet. I walk back from the bookstore smiling a little bit. As I reached my apartment I realized I didn’t manage to get myself a new book. Welp I guess I will just read Clay’s book cause why not.

(a/n well thats the first chapter done! I know its not great but its a start lol)
