Chapter Text
“Come.”
The naptime attendant never was one for wordy conversations.
He’d use short, precise words to convey exactly what he wants to communicate.
As it was, he currently beckoned you towards him.
“Come here.”
It was also rare for him to stray away from his regulated voice lines given to him specifically for caring for children during naptime.
Even when in guarding duty, he’d mostly use the same lines, only in a more sinister voice. It would be funny if he weren’t so damn creepy.
It was dark, the power turning off for the night as your shift only began. Moondrop usually busied himself with guardsmanship, but it seems like now was not the case.
“What’s up, Moon? Did something happen while I wasn’t there?” Y/N asked as they approached the hunched animatronic on the security desk, bright red eyes with tiny white pinprick pupils trained on them. Moondrop moved aside, hopping off the table to give you space so you could inspect it. There was a forgotten coffee mug left on it. He always found little messes everywhere to clean up, programmed to keep the pizzaplex clean and tidy. Why would he ask you to look at it is a mystery, though. Can’t he clean it up himself? He’s plenty competent! Besides, cleaning up after your coworkers wasn’t a part of the job description.
“I guess a previous guard forgot their coffee, too bad that it’s all cold now. Would you be a sweetheart and take it to the nearest lounge?”
Moondrop tilted his head this way, and that way, processing what you said. He shook his head after a moment.
“Can’t. The light.” a plain and dry answer, of course.
Y/N groaned, and motioned him towards the cup.
“I’ll go there with you to turn off the light, but YOU will wash it. I’m not touching that thing.”
And there you were, walking beside Moon towards the staff lounge. You never noticed how TALL this thing (guy?) was. Why would they build such a huge machine only to care for kids?
You both reached your destination, and you walked in, turning off the light (with a noise of protest from a coworker just sitting there on break), watching Moondrop crouch through the door and stop, taking in the space.
“Never been in one of these?”
He turned his attention back to you, quiet for a moment.
“Clean up, clean up.”
Ah, there it is, his usual usage of the sound bits. He rushes to the sink, cleaning the cup like his life depends on it. Before you know it, he finished scrubbing off all the gunk, and turned back to you, pausing again. For some reason, he looked… Timid. Shy maybe?
“Y/N.” So he knows your name? Huh.
“Yes Moon?” You respond, quirking your brow, one hand on your hip.
“What is your purpose?”
What a weird question. ‘What is your purpose?’ What is anyone’s purpose? Is that even a thing? Do robots get existential anxiety? You might need a bit more context.
“Could you clear it up a bit? I mean… Nobody really HAS a purpose, right? I’m here to make sure all the animatronics are in tip top condition, but that doesn’t really make it my purpose. I’m just a person.”
Moon made a noise similar to clicking his tongue, clasping his hands together. If he could furrow his brows, he would.
“I'm the naptime attendant. I do what Sun can’t. I remember what Sun won’t acknowledge. I protect Sun, so he can function. And Sun protects me, so I can. My purpose is to keep us functional. My purpose is to exist to benefit ‘the daycare attendant’ as a whole. Understood?”
…Huh. You never really paid any mind to the fact Sun and Moon shared the same body before. It’s pretty neat, honestly.
“So… You both are kind of a team with a mutual goal? Is that it?”
“Every part exists so the other part will be functional.”
Moon sounded mildly miffed at you.
“Understood?”
You make a soft hum indicating thought, tapping your chin. Moon’s smile grew strained.
“Well,” you began, “I’m just me. Plain and simple. There’s no other side to me like you and Sun.”
In one smooth motion, Moon grabbed your arm and pulled you to him, eliciting a surprised gasp from you.
“I exist to protect.” He squeezed your arm roughly. “Do you understand, Y/N? I protect Sundrop so we can be functional.”
“Moon, let go of me, you’re hurting me.” You kept your voice even, level, not wanting to aggravate the animatronic more.
After a silent moment that felt like it stretched forever, he let go reluctantly.
“The incident.” He looked anywhere but at you, hugging himself. “No one noticed. Why?”
Ohhh, now you get it.
“Sun didn’t notice. Handlers came and went. Technicians saw nothing.” He was squinting now.
“I contained it so Sun could care for the small ones.” His arms loosened. “No one did anything until it was too late.”
You remember it clearly. It started off with one lost child. And then another. And then another.
The pattern repeated itself: children would be dropped off to the Superstar Daycare, and a couple hours later, one would be gone.
At first, it was brushed off as hysterical parents wanting to throw fake lawsuits at the company, as Fazbear Corp. never had a very good name in regards to children’s safety. Or at least that’s what management told its workers.
There were complaints about the daycare attendant scaring the children, which was seen as normal as the rest of the animatronics got the same complaints, albeit not as frequently.
It took approximately half a year for the incident to arrive. The thing that shifted gears and caused an uproar.
“Do you remember it? How it felt?” you asked, pushing down the dread you felt as you slowly backed away from the animatronic. Maybe he wouldn’t notice.
Moon’s eyes homed in on you, like a drone flying directly to its target. You froze.
“Bad.” Silence. “Good.” More silence, this room suddenly felt way too small and the only other person (that is flesh and blood) had already left while you were busy talking to this thing. Fuck. It noticed.
“It felt good. At the time. But now it feels bad.” Moon expanded, faceplate spinning. He pushed himself to a standing position, hopped from one foot to another, then slouched and began exiting the room. Something in you was relieved he’s leaving so soon, but at the same time…
“Wait, Moondrop!” Why did you do that, why did you DO that??? He’s going to- yup he turned to you now, head tilted quizzically.
“I was thinking we could um… Work? Together tonight? I mean I haven’t looked at your… Functions in a while, yeah? That’s what I do, right?” ABORT ABORT STOP IT STUPID MOUTH STOP TALKING “And since the whole… Situation happened from neglect…”
Moon took a step towards you, then paused.
“...Maybe if… If I kinda??? Don’t let management neglect you? It can be avoided? Y’know???”
Y/N made a high pitched sound with a nervous, sheepish smile on their face, fidgeting with their sleeve.
“Check my functions?” The animatronic narrowed its eyes, a simple smile plastered on its face. “Meaning?”
“You know!” Your voice was high pitched and shaky, and you were gesturing way too much with your arms. “Just follow you around and watch that you’re doing stuff the right way or if you don’t I can do some corrective adjustments and such!”
The sound that came out of this machine was out of your nightmares, a low, gravelly chuckle, rolling upwards into a lingering ring. Moon took several steps towards you, faceplate in your personal space, noses nearly touching.
“They tried correcting.”
Its face tilted with a harsh click.
“They tried fixing.”
Its voice was haunting, reeking with malice. You have never seen one of the animatronics act like this.
“They failed.” Its faceplate tilted the other way, unnaturally so, another rough click click click erupting from the bot.
“Do you know…” Its finger trailed up your arm, giving you goosebumps. That feeling of dread is back in full force, all your senses on high alert, and you’re frozen there, incapable of moving or making any noise, eyes filling with tears. “How much self restraint do I need to show..?” It outright purred, fingertips walking on air and booping your nose, eliciting a chuckle from the robot.
Wait.
A nose boop?
In your dazed state you gave a shaky laugh, and shook your head, still stiff as stone and frozen solid.
“Scared.” He murmured more to himself than to you, taking a step back to look you over. “Relax.”
‘Ah yes, relax. Okay! I’ll just do that, snap my fingers and relax instantly! So easy!’ is what you would say if you weren’t dealing with a robot that may or may not want you dead. And also weren’t crying. Wait- wait no, shit, you didn’t mean to cry- goddamit Y/N why now why in front of this- this-
“Relax.” Moon repeated himself, reaching over, ignoring your flinch and pulling you to a hug, swaying slightly with you and rubbing your back. “Hush, hush now.”
“You’re safe.”
