Work Text:
Nancy went into the bathroom after waiting for her date, Steve, for a while.
And then she finds him kissing another girl.
Tears roll down her cheeks as she runs out the bathroom. She sits outside on a sidewalk as she cries, her makeup ruined.
Nancy stands up and walks back in the school. She looks around.
Everyone didn’t notice her presents, all too focused on their dates.
She wants to cry again.
But she doesn’t.
So, she goes to her best escape.
Alcohol.
She doesn’t get a glass, instead just takes the whole bottle and chugs it down.
Now, if she wasn’t so drunk enough to care, Nancy would’ve gotten in trouble for underage drinking.
That didn’t stop her, though.
She takes a swing after another.
And that’s how she ended up here.Kneeling in the middle of the dance floor, puking her guts out as tears roll down her face.
Everyone made a circle around her, laughs and whispers passed around. This is definitely not how she expected high school prom to go.
Nancy feels a gently hand on her shoulder.More whispers were passed around.
She looks up to the hand.
Jonathan.
He was wearing a tux, definitely not what he would usually wear.A small smile appeared on his lips as she looked at him.
He holds out a hand in front of her.
She hesitates, but takes his hand and he helps her up.He places an strong arm around her waist, almost like it was protective.
Jonathan leads her to the bathroom, disregarding the woman’s sign.He placed her in front of the toilet and she pukes once more.
Once made sure she was finished, Nancy and Jonathan sat on the bathroom floor, looking at each other.
“Are you okay?”He broke the awkward silence after a few minutes.
“No.”She sniffed.”My date cheated on me, I threw up in front of the whole school, my makeup and dress is ruined, and I never even got to have my first dance at prom.”
He listened as she rambled, nodding his head as she spoke.Jonathan was always like that.He always listened to what she has to say and never told her to shut up.
“I’m sorry, about your date.He doesn’t deserve you.”
She scoffed.
“You have to say that. We’re friends.”
Jonathan shakes his head.
“No, I’m serious. That guy just doesn’t realize the beautiful, talented, confident, extraordinary girl he lost.”She blushed at his words.
“Look I don’t know what to do about your date,”He stands up,”But, I do know that I could help you with your dance at your first prom.”
He holds out his hand.
“No, I can’t .My makeup and dress is ruined, and my breath probably smells like shit-“
“You’re still beautiful in my eyes.Makeup ruined or not.”He pulls out a pack of gum.
She takes it and his hand.
“Also, I think we can get the stains off your dress for tonight.”He grabs a cloth and starts wiping off her makeup.
He then moves to her dress and she stands awkwardly while he wipes the stains off.
——
They walk out the bathroom and while some people give them nasty looks, barely anyone noticed them.
Jonathan leads Nancy to the dance floor and he gently puts two hands on her waist.
With shaking hands, Nancy wraps them around Jonathan’s neck and start slowly moving side to side.
Nancy couldn’t have never imagined being in her place right now.
Nancy “The Slut” Wheeler and Jonathan “The Pervert” Byers dancing together.
Seems unnatural.
Behind them, Steve watched as they danced together, anger slowly rising in his chest.
He lets go of the girl his was kissing and storms out the school.
Without thinking, Nancy rests her head on his shoulder.Unexpectedly, he rests his on her head.
So, this wasn’t the prom she was expecting but Nancy wouldn’t want it any other way.
