Chapter Text
Donnie knew it was not strictly legal to keep a tap on your enemies' various means of communications, and that it was something that could more than likely fall under the grounds of stalking if he were ever caught.
He decided that an exception could be made for the Purple Dragons regardless.
And besides! He only ever usually checked their communications when it seemed suspicious or triggered one of his system's keywords.
…Or sometimes when he was bored.
Today, it had admittedly been the latter, but he'd found nothing of interest so far.
That was, until he'd come across an interesting message log between one of the dragons- Jason, he thinks?- and a mysterious third party.
What caught his attention was that it was an encrypted communication, from what he gathered to be a mostly deprecated server, as no communications had come in through it since he began spying on the dragons. The communication too, seemed to surprise Jason.
Jayce? Jason? Come in!
A- Angel? Is that you?
Phew, the connection still works! I'm surprised you guys maintained it this long.
We may have forgotten to take it down in the first place...
Whatever, that's not important- listen, I've just come across something really serious! I could use your guys' help!
Us? Don't you live in Chicago now? What could you possibly need with the dragons?
Yes, but you guys are the only ones with the skills to help me right now.
The fate of the whole country could be at stake!
You and Jeremy were always the most helpful of the dragons, can't you two help me out?
I don't think- I mean Kendra would-
Oh no. She's here.
...Who's this?
Angel? Can't believe you still have access to this. Talk about backdoor vulnerabilities.
Donnie couldn't help but snicker. She really had no idea.
Whatever you want, we're not interested.
Kendra please! This is serious... like, on the level of cyber terrorism serious! I could use any help I could get on this.
...What are you talking about?
It's this tech I've been tracking. It seems experimental- but it's extremely powerful. I think- I think it's some kind of controllable emp. If this fell into the wrong hands, it could... the whole country could be held for ransom!
LOL. You're a riot, Angel. You've gotta be joking.
I'm not! I'd been tracking some crazy electrical usage and disturbances to the energy grid and I finally managed to pinpoint it the other day. I used a drone to scout out the area one night and that's when I overheard- I think they plan on selling it to the highest bidder.
Wow, that's a fun made up story, but unfortunately we don't help ex-dragons. I'm closing this channel.
No, wait-!
He hated to agree with Kendra- it sounded like a ridiculous story, that he should put no merit into.
And he wouldn't have- if it hadn't been followed up by Kendra texting Jeremy to look into the electricity readings for Chicago over the past two months.
If it was worth looking into for the Purple Dragons, it was worth his own investigation.
Starting with this Angel character...
Donnie knew of only one place to get more info on humans, particularly when it came to the Dragons.
"April!" He all but shouted into the phone, unable to resist the excitement that came with investigating. He had just finished a detective show, so he was having fun with the concept of interrogating April, sue him.
April winced, switching her phone to the other ear so she could rub at where Donnie had just destroyed the first one. "...And hello to you too, Donnie. What's the haps? Movie night isn't until next week."
"Wait really? Is it my turn to pick the movie? Oh I know the- hey wait a minute!" Donnie shakes his head. Focus! "That's not what I was calling about, actually."
"Huh? Then what-"
"You're familiar with all the members of the Purple Dragons, right?"
April balked- that question had definitely come out of left field. "Yeah, I guess? I've known those guys since elementary."
"Do you know anything about a Purple Dragon named Angel?"
April furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "Angel? Yeah I knew her. She was actually chill. She joined the Dragons when they were first starting out. Eventually she realized a certain someone was a little too stuck up and that she was better off without them, I guess. She quit. They tried to pretend like it wasn't a big deal, but she was one of their strongest members."
"Fascinating…!" Donnie was liking this girl already. "What happened to her after she left the Dragons?"
"Well, she was already leaving the state by that point, her family moved to the midwest. Chicago, I think?"
"Oh." That's right, he'd read something like that in their logs. It was a shame, he probably wouldn't be able to meet her then.
April narrows her eyes, unable to keep the suspicion out of her voice now. "Donnie? Why are you asking about Angel anyways- how did you even find out about-"
"How quickly you forget my genius, April!" He interrupts her question. "Obviously I know all there is to know about the Purple Dragons. One must always know thine enemy ."
"Uhhh-huh. And how exactly does one learn all this stuff about 'thine enemy' when they don't go to a human school?"
"Oh, that? I just tapped all their devices" Donnie says, nonplussed.
"YOU WHAT?! Donnie, that's STALKING!"
"Yeah, and they're an evil tech club bent on world domination or whatever! Honestly you should be thanking me, I'm doing New York a service."
April pinches the bridge of her nose in frustration. "Ugh, we have got to talk about your morals at some point."
"While I'd love to discuss in detail my robust moral compass with you, April- I gotta go! Thanks for the info!"
"Donnie wait-! Why did you-!"
April groans in frustration when she hears the click of the call ending before she can finish asking her question. She was going to get on that boy about phone etiquette one day! Now it was going to bug her for the rest of the day.
Just what did he need that information on Angel for?
