Work Text:
Standing outside the doors of the school, April was waiting.
She looked chill, she knew that. Especially in her yellow prom dress, which had a halter top and above-the-knee skirt, with a thick orange trim around her waist with two matching lines on her skirt. With that she had on a dark lime-green flats and a gray, mid-sleeve dress jacket that fell down to right where the thick orange line on her waist started. Her hair was pulled back into one giant poof low on her head, except for the hair that made her bangs. She also had golden hoop earrings, courtesy of her mother.
So yeah, she knew she looked like the queen she was.
But she was actually freaking out.
Because her friends were supposed to be here with her for prom, and neither of them had showed up yet.
She started to panic.
She knew Casey and Sunita wouldn’t have ditched her, they were too good friends for that. They had promised, and even said they were excited because April had told them about each other and this would be their actual first meeting. And this was Prom! Who wouldn’t be excited about prom?!
Which meant that if they didn’t ditch her, that meant they had been held up by something, each of them.
April barely knew was Sunita’s private life was like, her being a yokai-in-disguise and all. Neither did she with Casey, who didn’t talk about her family that much. It could’ve been something simple, maybe their parents were holding them up with photos, maybe traffic was making them wait, maybe they hadn’t noticed the time and were getting ready as fast as they could.
Or maybe it was something else.
What if Sunita had gotten caught up with some evil yokai in the Hidden City? What if Big Mama kidnapped her to be an arena clown? What if humans had discovered her?!
What if Casey got caught up with her vigilante stuff and was fighting thugs? What if Raph or one of the other guys convinced her to get into one of their nightly mutant fights with some villains and she was hurt?! What if the police caught her fighting thugs or doing something else and she got arrested?! What if—
“April!” A yell of her name snapped her out of her thoughts, and she looked up—and her jaw dropped.
Sunita—in her human form—waved to her as she walked out of a black car with tinted windows, closing the door before it drove away from the school’s front yard. She was wearing a long, strapless magenta dress with a tight, white long sleeve under it with silver flats, her cloaking brooch pinned to shirt. Her hair was pulled with a brighter magenta hairband.
April was speechless.
Her friend was…hot?
She bloomed dark red.
Okay well yeah she always saw Sunita as attractive but like as in a ‘oh you’re really cute way’ but right now it was more like a ‘WAIT SHIT WAIT SHE’S REALLY HOT’ and no was NOT the time to gay panic over her—
She was once again, snapped out of her thoughts when her shoulder was tapped and she realized Sunita was in front of her. “What’s wrong? You’re all red. And your face looks kind of funny.”
Then her eyes widened, and she looked down at what she was wearing, “It’s what I’m wearing, isn’t it?! Ugh, I knew I was dressing up too much—“
“NO YOU LOOK GREAT!” April suddenly blurted, and grew an even darker blush as Sunita looked back up her and smiled, “Really?”
April gulped, and fanned her face, “Yeah, yeah, I guess I’m just a little hot—I MEAN WARM, hahaha! But seriously, you look, um, you look amazing!”
Sunita sighed with relief, “Oh really? Thanks. I tried my best. This is my first school dance. I’m nervous. I was kinda freaking out earlier. I hope I didn’t make you wait too long?”
April shook her head, trying to not think of how snug the dress was on her friend, “NOPE! Nope, no you didn’t make me wait long at all! Haha, I just got here.”
Then Sunita held out her hand, “Should we go inside then?”
April pulled on the strap around her neck, taking a deep breath in and trying to cool herself down.
She exhaled, “Actually, I was thinking we could stay outside and wait a few more minutes for Casey. I want you two to get the chance to talk and actually introduce you two to each other before we go inside and get our dance on, and all that.”
Sunita’s smile grew wider, “Okay! I can’t wait to meet her! She sounds so cool—“
“YO I’M HERE!” A shout came, and April and Sunita turned to look at school entrance to see the said vigilante walking in.
April’s jaw dropped once again.
Casey was in a slick white dress shirt with an open dark red dress jacket. Her shirt was tucked into a black leather belt with a silver buckle, not entirely wrapped around her black pants, some of the belt loosely hanging down. She also had black dress shoes, a chain necklace, and black lipstick.
Once again, as Casey walked up to the two—Sunita going up to her excitedly—April was rendered speechless.
Why. Why was Casey hot too.
No. No this couldn’t be happening.
WHY WAS SHE HOT????
Her eyes registered Casey and Sunita talking, but her mind didn’t. She was too busy gay-panicking because oh NO BOTH of her friends were very, VERY HOT and this was NOT GOOD!
Okay, she rationalized, let’s calm down here. So your friends were hot. It’s not like you haven’t found women attractive before. It doesn’t mean you have a crush on either of them, much less both of them!
No, it wasn’t like she dreamed of hanging out with them in the Hidden City or after school. It’s not like she dreamed of either of them and sometimes both of them saving her after she was captured by Big Mama or some other villain or something. It’s not like she liked the little things about them, like the way Casey would bite her lip sometimes, or the way Sunita was so happy in her original yokai form, or the way Sunita held her hand, or the way Casey playfully pulled her into a side-hug, or the way—
Okay, thinking about it now, it sounded very much the opposite.
But it couldn’t be. It couldn’t! Yeah, she was a lesbian, and yeah, maybe she was really close to both of them, and yeah, maybe she did sometimes wonder what if would be like if she dated one of them, but everyone totally did that, right?
RIGHT????
As the two walked over to her, Casey grinning and Sunita smiling, April had an epiphany.
Okay. So maybe. Possibly. There was just a tiny, tiny, very small, very little chance, very small, microscopic chance.
That she had a crush on both of her friends.
Not just one. Both!
Maybe she was out of her mind. Maybe if was the thought of almost everyone at the prom having a date. Maybe she was thinking herself into having a crush.
But also. Like.
They looked really cute in their prom outfits.
Maybe it was the outfits?
But the way they looked at her, the way they were right by each other and right by her, it felt…just right in a way?
Sunita grabbed her hand, snapping her out of her thoughts for the third time that day. As April looked up to meet her bright green eyes, she had a feeling that was going to be happening a lot that night. Maybe for a long time.
“Are we going in now?”
“Yeah,” Casey said, putting her arm around April’s shoulders, which definitely made her squeak. “I wanna see what the Prom hype is about.”
“I. Um.” April gulped. Okay, crushes or not, she had to snap out of this. There would be time to think about this later. She couldn’t have her friends noticing her weirdness and making her panic more. This was supposed to be a Girl’s Night. Not a Panic-About-Possible-Crushes night.
“Yeah, yeah, let’s go!” She said, pulling herself away from the two and speed-walking into the building. “I heard they have a disco ball! Woo! Prom night!”
Yeah. Prom Night! Not Gay-Panic Night. Nope! This was definitely okay. This was definitely chill. Mmhm. Totally. Yup.
She gulped.
She’d need a talk with Donnie later.
