Duet of the Moon and the Bird

Summary:

The night before their performance at the hermitcraft annual talent show, something disastrous happens to Pearl and Grian.

They all know it’s his fault, so why don’t they hate him? Fine, he’ll just hate himself if no one else will.

A slight crossover fic of Hermitcraft and OMORI! Not the first pairing I’d think of, but hey I think it turned out decent.

Notes:

Welcome back to round two of:
✨Author doesn’t know how to write songfics!✨

This is also an announcement that I probably won’t be writing anything else until January next year, apart from my 12 days of Christmas fic. Sorry!

Yes I decided to write this instead of more chapters for my 12 days book

Fun fact! This took less than 2 hours to write. I’m sorry.

Lyrics are from 0r3o’s cover of Duet

Work Text:

Let’s play
To a song, that we made
Wipe your tears
And your fears
I’ll be here

—————————————

Tonight was the night of the annual Hermitcraft talent show. All of the hermits had gathered in a special-built amphitheater just outside the spawn chunks, and they were all eagerly anticipating the performances to come.

Despite his confident and mischievous nature, Grian never participated. He’d watch, absolutely, he wouldn’t miss it for the world! But he was absolutely petrified of actually going on stage and being watched by everyone. Despite everyone’s bribes, begs and pleas, he would completely refuse to go anywhere near the stage.

But this year was different. Pearl had come to him with a proposition: what if they performed some of the old songs that they’d learnt as kids? Pearl on the piano, Grian on the violin.

And for some reason unknown to either of them, Grian agreed.

They picked out the pieces they would play (Pearl would start with do you remember?, Grian would play OMORI, and they would finish it off with the final duet, and started to practice.

Come on, just once! For luck! Dump all your stuff into the chest, and just do it like we’ve done it a thousand times before.

Everything is going to be ok. I promise.

—————————————

when the nights get too lonely,
when the skies are too grey
it’s ok, it’s ok
just take everything day by day, and you will see
it’s not as bad as it seems
I know, times can be tough

Why was it so hard for him to accept it?

It was easy for everyone else.

She’s gone. It’s his fault. Those are the plain and simple facts.

But surely there’s a chance she’s ok, right? That he’ll get to see her again?

It truly was pitiful that he tried to satiate himself with these hollow hopes.

The void is forgiving, but it’s patience can only be stretched so far. If someone doesn’t come back, they likely never will.

Why wasn’t he met with anger when he brought the news? He deserved it. He deserved every molecule of resentment that they had against him. He’d ruined the night, he’d burdened everyone and she was gone.

Gone.

the waves,
can reach high and low
it can be rough
But I promise, this will all soon pass away
everything will be ok
so…

It only took 2 months to start having hallucinations. A distorted giggle, a black teardrop-shaped thing, even distant piano music.

He’d started to just accept it as his life.

And so he hid.

He hid away, locked in his starter house for what felt like an eternity.

He stopped calling the other hermits back, stopped answering the door, and completely cut himself off from the rest of the world. It didn’t surprise him when they stopped as well. It was the least they deserved, to not have to deal with him.

For some inexplicable reason, he knew Pearl was there. Call it a 6th sense, call it insanity, he knew. It was the only thing that he could possibly attempt to find any form of comfort in. Sometimes, he swore she was singing to him.

The fact that she might forgive him was clearly desperate, wishful thinking, but he wished nonetheless.

And despite his disheveled appearance and broken mind, he felt at peace.

He deserved this.

It took two years for X to finally come back to season 8. Grian promised to him that he’d come over to season 9 “when he was ready”, but at this point X didn’t think he ever would be. So he planned to go over there and drag Grian back to the rest of the hermits.

It took him two years.

Two years kick down the door.

Two years to search the house.

Two years to find the note.

Two years to realise.

Two years too late.

“She’s here. I’m sorry I took her away, and I’ll go join her now. I’ll be out of your way for the rest of your lives.”

I’ll

Be

Here

Notes:

Me? Being self indulgent? Of course not!

Sorry you had to suffer through that lol, I hope it was mildly comprehensible.

I have a tumblr now! It’s here:

Go play Omori, it made me cry and I think I might be one of the best games I’ve ever played

Kudos are greatly appreciated and comments make my day, but thank you for choosing to read this in the first place :D
