Our Spot

Summary:

(Inspired by Hournite Week 2022.)

Roy and Dick are both camp counselors. All their family and friends think they are in love.

They are but that’s not the point.

Camp offers games, arts and crafts, and a secret special spot that isn’t so secret.

Camp offers a chance at love.

(Titans are freshmen in college.)

Chapter 1: Before Camp Starts

Chapter Text

Roy is thankful for many things in his life. He loves his family and friends.

However, if he has to continue being in the car with Wally as he attempts to be subtle, he’s going to open the car door and jump out.

Dick always called Roy dramatic. Not that Dick has much place to talk.

Speaking of Dick, Wally glances at him again. “I mean, you both have been in love with each other since we were campers here.”

The door option is looking pretty good right now.

“I am not having this conversation again .” Roy declared. They had this conversation multiple times during the last month of training.

“You need to have it at some point. We’re counselors now.” Wally reminded him. “It might affect how you both work.”

Roy snorted. “I doubt this is gonna distract us.”

Wally glanced at him again. Roy is close to yelling at him to keep his eyes on the road. He doesn’t.

“Okay.” Wally still sounded unsure but dropped it as they drove into the parking lot of Camp Jump.

Wally parks. Roy thanks him and escapes the car.

A teen was sitting on a bench. No parents, no car, no suitcase—just a bag beside him. One hour early. The kid has dark red hair, glasses covering his eyes, and a defeated posture.

“I’ll catch up with you later.” Roy told Wally.

“Are you sure?”

“I got it.” Roy promised.

Wally nodded and walked towards the main building.

Roy walked to the teen. “Hey.”

The teen’s head snapped up. “Uh, hi.”

“I’m Roy. I’m a counselor here. Are you new?”

The teen paused. “Yeah…I’m Colton.”

“Nice to meet you, Colton. You’re really early.”

“I know.” Colton admitted. “I had to check the area out for my plans for mischief.” He tried to smirk but it looked fake.

“When did your guardian drop you off?”

Colton checked his phone. “Dad dropped me off 30 minutes ago.”

Roy kept his face open and neutral even when he wanted to scream. That wouldn’t help anyone.

“Okay. My fellow counselor and I are also here so you can hang out in the main building instead of the hot sun.” Roy heard a car park and turn off but didn’t pay attention to it because Colton spoke up.

“I…”

Roy knew what he was going to say. “It’s not a problem.”

Colton sighed. “Okay. Okay. Fine. I’ll come.”

Roy smiled and led Colton into the main building.

He heard Dick’s voice and paused.

“Hey, Roy. Is everything okay?”

Roy turned.

Dick smiled when he saw the duo. Roy’s stupid, stupid heart did a little jump at the sight. Roy reasoned that Dick was smiling at the kid.

“Mr. Dick, this is Colton. Colton, one of your camp counselors.”

If possible, Dick’s smile widened.

Roy continued, “He shouldn’t wait in the sun.”

“Right.” Dick agreed and the trio walked in to see Wally. “You can take a seat right there.” He pointed to a chair.

“Thanks.” Colton said, looking much better, probably realizing he’s not causing an issue. He sat.

Roy turned to Dick, while Wally walked away to “get the kid some water.”

“Hey.” Roy whispered.

“Hey.” Dick echoed back in a whisper. Wally came back and gave Colton a bottle of water. “Can we talk outside?”

Roy nodded.

Dick turned to the others, “We’ll be right back.”

They walked outside and a few feet away from the main building.

“That’s one of my kids.” Dick said, losing the smile.

“His dad dropped him off an hour and half early.” Roy informed him.

Dick’s frown deepened. “He’s lucky you were there.”

Once again, Roy’s annoying heart leaped.

“Contact information?” Roy wondered

“Family friend is listed as the only contact. I’m going to give her a call.” Dick stated.

“Smart.” Roy nodded.

Dick examined him. Roy looked back.

“Thanks for being here, Roy.”

“I’m always here.” Roy said it like a promise and maybe meant it.

“Right.”

Roy coughed and the moment broke. “We should go get ready.”

The other man nodded. “Right. I need to go check my cabin.” Dick rushed off.

Roy sighed and wanted to scream.

Roy is still in love with Dick, as if he could ever stop.

This is definitely going to affect their work.
