You Could Do Better

Summary:

“What did you think of Chris?” Lucy asked as they headed for the morgue to follow up on a lead for the crazy re-animated arm.

“Meh,” Tim said. He shot a glance at Lucy, who was staring at him with one eyebrow raised. “What?” he demanded. Lucy kept looking at him. “Fine. He probably won’t smother you while you sleep.”

“So you did invite us along so that you could vet him! I knew it!” Lucy crowed triumphantly.

During Episode 4x12

“What did you think of Chris?” Lucy asked as they headed for the morgue to follow up on a lead for the crazy re-animated arm.

“Meh,” Tim said. He shot a glance at Lucy, who was staring at him with one eyebrow raised. “What?” he demanded. Lucy kept looking at him. “Fine. He probably won’t smother you while you sleep.”

“So you did invite us along so that you could vet him! I knew it!” Lucy crowed triumphantly.

“Don’t get excited. I knew you were going to ask my opinion at some point.” He shot her a look. “Which you did.”

“I don’t know why I even ask. You always say they’re not good enough.”

“Because they’re not,” he confirmed.

“Chris either?” Lucy asked.

Tim shrugged. “You could do better.”

Lucy turned her whole body to look at him. He hated when she did that. It felt like she was interrogating him.

“Okay, Tim. Who is good enough?” She held up her index finger. “Firefighters are out.”

“Well-meaning idiots,” Tim agreed.

A second finger joined the first. “Lawyers are a no.”

“Ugh.”

Her count went up to three. “Doctors?”

He shot her a look. “C’mon.”

“Cops?” Lucy ventured, adding a fourth to her finger tally.

Tim shook his head. “We walk into dangerous, unpredictable situations every day. You really want to worry about whether your significant other has made it through the day every day?”

“Okay.” Lucy dropped her hand. “Lifeguards?”

Tim opened his mouth to respond, then shut it. “I’m not answering that. You’ll just turn it around and use it against me and Ashley.”

Lucy resettled herself to face forward in the seat. “You don’t have to say it. You already thought it. And we both know that whatever it was, it wasn’t unreserved endorsement.”

Tim stewed in the driver’s seat. The words hung unsaid in the air between them: you could do better.
