Work Text:

Tears of mirth streamed down Prompto’s face as he crouched near the edge of the riverbank, doubled over in breathless laughter.

“Whadda think you're laughing at?” Noctis huffed irritatedly as he struggled to climb to his feet.

“You…” Prompto wheezed as he continued to struggle to breathe amidst his hysterics.

When the rain had let up a few hours ago, and Noctis had dragged him along to see if any of Sania’s mysterious rainbow frogs were around, Prompto expected to be bored out of his mind. Instead, he got a front row seat as the King of Lucis lost his balance, and face planted in the slick, thick mud along the shore.

“Yeah, laugh it up,” Noctis challenged as he started to throw a handful of mud in Prompto’s direction, only to abort mission as he slipped again, and fell flat on his ass.

Prompto lost it all over again. He could barely see through the tears in his eyes, but he’d never forgive himself if he missed this chance. Pulling his camera out, he took several rapidfire shots of the liege of their land, pouting where he sat coated in mud from head to toe.

“High treason,” Noctis said in a flat tone that made Prompto start laughing again.

“Sorry, buddy. Kinda hard to take you seriously when you look like that.”

“Well, you’re gonna look like me in a minute,” Noctis threatened as he pulled a dagger out of the Armiger to warp.

Prompto ran for it, howling with laughter the whole way back to the Haven. It was only a matter of time before Noctis caught him and made him just as muddy as he was right now. But Prompto didn’t care. The memory and the pictures he had to immortalize the moment were absolutely priceless.
