There she was: the most gorgeous person I have ever laid my eyes upon, Shizen Koda. She had just transferred to this school. She supposedly had a very harsh upbringing. No one I’ve asked has talked to her much, so I don’t know much about it.
“Yo, Mana, did you see the new student?” Asked my idiot twin brother, Hisashi.
“Yeah she’s beautiful, way out of your league, don’t get any ideas.” I chuckle, taking a sip of my tea.
“Says you! You're probably hoping she’s into girls, huh?” Blurted Hisashi, a little too loudly.
I cup my hand over his mouth and pull him aside.
“How about next time you say that right to their face?” I whisper, glaring at him.
He stared at me blankly for a few seconds, “Oh you’re being sarcastic, aren’t you?”
Sighing, I take a deep breath and decide to approach them.
“Hey, my name’s Mana, what’re your name and pronouns?”
“Hi, uh, I’m Shizen and my pronouns? I’m not sure what you mean by that.” She says, shyly.
“Oh, pronouns are how you want someone to refer to you in place of your name!” I explain with a smile.
“Oh.” She looks down for a moment, then continues. “I think she/they/it then.” They smile.
Their smile was so cute, I was taken aback for a moment.
“Are you okay? You’re all red!” It asks with genuine concern, and grabs my face.
I pull back, “Oh yes I’m quite alright, hahaha!” I reply nervously.
“Oh okay. So, do you both want to eat lunch with me?”
“Yes, definitely!” Hisashi says, still giggling. “Called it.” He whispers in my ear.
I kick his ankle and we start walking to the cafeteria for lunch. When we get there, Shizen leads us to a table with a couple other students they had made friends with.
“Hello, friends! Haru, Sumiko, and Keiko, I’d like you to meet my two new friends, Mana and uh sorry I didn’t catch your name. My bad.” Shizen twirls her , bashfully.
“Huh, wow. Rude.” Hisashi rolls his eyes.
“Shut up, dork. This is my twin brother, Hisashi. I’m pretty sure he has anger issues so just ignore his snide little comments.” I claim while squeezing Hisashi’s shoulder, hoping he silences himself.
“Ah, well, it’s very nice to meet you guys! I’m Sumiko, this is my girlfriend Keiko, and that’s Haru!” Sumiko chimes.
She is the nicest looking girl I have ever seen, and she’s gay? Just when I’ve been thinking I need more fruity friends. My prayers have been answered.
We eat lunch while chatting about our interests, exchange numbers, and head our separate ways after lunch.

After school, we were all added to a group chat and we planned a hang out.

- also yall we should go the new roller skating rink downtown -
- i heard they take song suggestions and the ticket prizes are good quality -

Hisashi and I arrived at the same time as Sumiko and Keiko. Soon afterwards, the others showed up too. We walked in and Sumiko paid for all of us.
“Sumi, you’re too nice for your own good sometimes.” Keiko told Sumiko.
“I really don’t mind Koko!” She assured Keiko as we kept walking.
“You guys are a cute couple!” I chuckled.
“We know, hehe.” Sumiko chirped sarcastically.
After we all checked out skates, I assisted Shizen in getting off of the metal bench. We approach the rink and Shizen pulls back.
“I can stay back here with you if you’re not ready.” I whisper.
“Yeah, that would be nice. Thank you.” She sighs in relief.
We slowly skate back to the bench.
“Sorry, you must be annoyed.” Shizen mumbles.
“What? Of course, I’m not annoyed. Really! I get it! I was scared the first time I went skating too.” I assure my nervous friend. “Uh, can I tell you something?” I ask.
They nod.
“Now, I’m not trying to sound creepy, but, I think you have a really cute smile.”
It looks at me confused. “I, are you admitting feelings for me?” They say bluntly.
“Wh- what?? Sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything. Please ignore me.”
“No, no. I agree.”
“You agree that you have a cute smile?”
“That’s not what I meant. Um, you have a cute smile too.”
Does Shizen like me too? Should I confess? But what if I end up embarrassing myself? I think I should do it anyway. We just met, but I feel a very strong pull to them. I want to be around her at all times.
“I-” I’m cut off by Hisashi.
“Yo, why aren’t you guys skating?” He rudely interrupts.
“Shizen is a little anxious, so I am staying here with them until it’s ready to try.”
“Shizen, they have baby cane things for beginners, I can buy you one if you want.”
“Yes! That would help, I think.” They beam.
“Alright, wait here. I’ll be back.” He sticks a lollipop in his mouth and skates to the renting counter.
“What were you gonna say, before he cut you off?” Shizen inquires.
“Oh, it’s nothing.” Maybe that was a sign that I shouldn't confess. “Maybe another time.”
“Oh, alright!”
Hisashi comes skating back laughing like a mad man.
“Hahahaha! This is fun! Shizen, when you’re done, I call this thing!” He says before falling over.
“Idiot, you were going too fast.” I scoff.
He glares at me, gets up, and skates back to the rink. Shizen and I make our way to the rink and have a fun time skating together.
Time goes by quickly, and before long, it’s time to go home.
