12:59 turns to 1 AM as I put my phone on charge. My phone's battery may be low, but my body feels like it's at 100 with this restlessness cowering inside.
Lying my head back on the pillow, I try to think about anything other than her, but it's useless.
Bright-green eyes look out over the crowd as she sings, her freckles as apparent as ever. I can't help but think of the way her hair looks in the sunlight; how I wish I could run my fingers through it again—this time not in some fancy hotel room, but my own. I can't help but think of how when she sings, it's like there's nothing else in the world I can hear but her; or how her heels announce her every step; or how she always has to remind me that I don't need to camouflage myself all the time, hence her giving me the nickname "Chameleon". She says "champion" and "chameleon" contain the same first four letters in the beginning and the last two at the end, so she just regards them as the same thing. I tell her it's not so, but I play along anyway. If it makes her laugh, I'll always play along.
Oh, how I could replay her laughter.
There could never be enough words in the dictionary to describe her, but if there was, I would hold her close to me and define every one of them as if I were telling a story, answering all the curious questions that would ultimately come to her.
But she's halfway across the world, in the white wonderland of Snowpoint City. Far away from me
Look How she's made me.
My phone ringing snaps me out of my reverie. And when it's her name that flashes across the screen, my heart jumps. Disaster.
Calm. Act calm.
"Hello?"
"Hi Chameleon-I mean Champion Dash." Her voice's got me hypnotized. Tongue-tied. "Oh fuck, I forgot time zones exist. Isn't it like 1 AM there?"
I chuckle at her greeting but otherwise say nothing.
"Anyway, I got your text and I wanted to tell you I also had a lot of fun last week. Also, I promise I read it right when you sent it, just had to go into the studio so that's why it took me twenty minutes to call."
Twenty minutes. I'd been staring into space for twenty minutes.
"It's OK," I managed to say through the thick lump in my throat.
"Hey, don't you have some festival or something today?"
"Yes-yeah. I do."
"Please Dash, go to sleep. Champions need their rest, and so do chameleons."
She wants me to go to sleep. If this were any other person, any other situation, I would, immediately. But not this time. I can't surrender my body to slumber when it yearns for her.
"I can't," I admit in a rasp.
"Something keeping you up? You can talk to me about it."
Oh, if only Allison knew…
