Scrabble

Summary:

Kate and Lucy have a night of Scrabble.

Notes:

This takes place in a few years.

Work Text:

“You ready for lunch?” Lucy closes the box in her hands as Jesse approaches her desk.

“Nothing!” Lucy shoves the box in her desk.

Jesse arches his eyebrow, “Nothing? It looked like a shiny ring in a box. Maybe for Whistler.”

“I hate federal agents.” Lucy playfully glares at him. “I don’t want to jinx it.”

“Are you going to pro-” Jesse gets cut off.

“Shh! I really don’t want it to go bad.” Lucy animatedly waves her arms to prevent Jesse from speaking.

“She’s going to say yes.” Jesse assures her.

“You don’t know that.” Lucy says worriedly.

“You’re worrying about nothing.” Jesse comforts her. “When are you going to do it?”

“Tonight.” Lucy says confidently. “She’s got a lunch meeting today so I’ll make a nice romantic dinner, pull out our Scrabble board, and then propose.”

“That’s sweet. There’s no way she’ll say no.” Jesse promises.

    “I hope so.” Lucy says.

“She will.” Jesse reassures. “I’m hungry. You still in for lunch?”

    “You know it.” Lucy smiles.

“Lucy? You home?” Kate calls as she enters their mostly darkened apartment. She takes a moment to look at the brightly lit candles all around.

“Right over here.” Lucy holds out a glass of wine for Kate.

    “Thanks.” Kate accepts the glass.

“I have dinner all made and I thought we could play Scrabble.” Lucy takes Kate’s hand and leads her into the apartment. “I figured you could use a break.”

“I really appreciate it.” Kate smiles.

“You won’t when I kick your butt in Scrabble.” Lucy smirks.

“Good luck with that, I remain the reigning champion of Scrabble.” Kate confidently trash-talks.

“I’m coming for your crown.” Lucy laughs.

    “That’s what you always say.”

    “I win.” Lucy protests.

    “Sometimes.” Kate reluctantly acknowledges.

“Well prepare to lose tonight!” Lucy says anyway.

“We’ll see about that.” Kate sits down at their table. “Let’s get this game started.”

“Do you want to start?” Lucy takes a bite of her food.

“Bad move Tara.” Kate picks her letters out of the bag.

“I’m giving you an advantage since you obviously need it.” Lucy jokes.

    “Right.” Kate rolls her eyes.

Kate places down her tiles and then Lucy does hers. The two of them go at it for a few minutes with their silence being occasionally broken with them crowing if they hit a double or triple square, and if one of them manages to block the other’s word.

Lucy takes a last sip of wine, “Would you mind getting me some water? My turn might take a second.”

“I’ll take pity on you but don’t cheat.” Kate says good naturedly.

“Wouldn’t dream of it.” Lucy watches Kate leave and quickly pulls the tiles from her pocket. Lucy manages to arrange the letters just before Kate comes back in.

“Here’s your water.” Kate hands Lucy a glass. “Did you play?”

“I did.” Lucy fiddles with the box.

Kate glances down, “Hold on you can’t put marry me down, that’s two words. Oh!”

Lucy finally pulls out the box and opens it to reveal a beautiful ring, “Kate Whistler will you marry me?”

“Of course. I mean yes!” Kate stutters out.

Lucy places the ring on Kate’s finger, “I was a bit worried you were going to focus more on docking me points than saying yes.”

“Even though I love the words you’re not getting any points for them.” Kate jests.

“Despite that I still love you.”

“I love you too.” Kate replies.

“I’ve just got to make sure you’re not marrying me because it’s the financially responsible thing to do.” Lucy smiles.

“You definitely don’t have to worry about that.” Kate and Lucy’s lips meet in a kiss.
