“Am I supposed to be threatened by this or did you just not have anywhere else to put me?” Matt was trying to cover up the fear that was bubbling in his stomach - he had gotten pretty good at that over the past few years of being Daredevil. Take a few quips from Peter here, the lack of self control from Wade, the perfect combination to allow Matt to calm down just a little.
Fisk leaned over him, this wasn’t the most pleasant of situations.
He knew that there were several guns pointed at him, ready to fire. If any of them would let pull their trigger Matt would be dead. Matt was tied to a table, hands wrapped together in a few layers of rope: he wasn’t about to get out any time soon. He had been struggling for the past five minutes as Fisk continued to speak; these “supervillains” really needed to get their act together. What was up with the number of monologues they needed to cram in before they tried to put a bullet in his head?
Matt could tell that Fisk was scowling now, but the way the muscles in his face sounded. “Maybe I just wanted the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen to realize his reign has come to an end.”
He smirked, “My reign? I’m nothing like you; I’m actually trying to protect this city.” Before Matt could process what was happening, a fist collided with his cheek, splitting open a wound that had formed a few days ago. The impact caused his brain to spin a little - he had already been knocked around before getting tied up; he probably had a concussion right now, it was just going to continue to worsen unless he got some medical attention from Claire and more than three minutes of rest.
There was the sound of something being taken out of a pocket, “And I’m cleaning up the mess.”
There was a click, the safety of a gun being taken off. Cold, polished metal pressed against his forehead - his mask had previously been torn off. “It’s been an honor hunting you down Mr. Murdock.”
Matt smiled in the face of death.
It wasn’t because he was ready to die, because he wasn’t. There were far too many things that he needed to do, he had people that loved him and he loved them as well. Foggy would be distraught, he wouldn’t know what to do with himself. Matt just hoped that he would be able to move on - he knew that the other man loved him, he did as well - but Foggy always deserved better than him. That man deserved the world and Matt was never able to give it to him.
Karen wouldn’t be alright after either, but she was a strong woman; she knew what to do in the face of tragedy. Karen and Foggy would have each other which was all he could hope for. They would need each other after this - more than they ever did before.
There were other people that were going to suffer because of his death, but Matt knew they would be alright in the end, they would know that Matt died protecting this city - that was the only thing he had ever wanted. Hell’s Kitchen was made better because of Daredevil, hopefully, his legacy would live on. Peter and Wade could do it - he knew they could. They were both stronger than they thought - they would be okay. It would take a while, but they would get there eventually.
So, Matt smiled in the face of death - the smirk that he had in the best and worst of situations. The rope was digging into his wrists and the barrel of the gun was pressed harshly against his forehead. “Someone will come to fill my place. This city won’t ever bow down to a man like you.”
Fisk sneered, “You never know what people are capable of doing until the worst scenario plays out.”
Matt could hear Fisk moving to pull the trigger of the handgun. He prayed three Hail Marys, knowing that the Devil could never make it to Heaven.
