Work Text:
Maybe she had gone crazy. Lane wasn’t sure what that would feel like, though defying her mother so completely was a pretty sure sign insanity had set in.
It couldn’t matter now. She had come too far to turn back, she had to press on. Keep on keeping on. Otherwise, she would regret it.
Outside the dorm, dizzy from the California heat, heart pounding with nerves, when he finally opened the door, she barely gave him a chance to acknowledge her before she spoke.
“Dave, I know it’s been a while and maybe you’ve moved on and this will all mean nothing, but I had to come and tell you... I love you.”
The silence that followed seemed to go on forever, loud as crashing waves in her ears. Still, no response.
“Okay,” she forced out, swallowing hard, feeling nauseous, “I’m just going to go-”
“Lane.” He grabbed her arm the moment she tried to go, turned her back to him, pulling her close. “I love you too.”
Never the type for swooning, still Lane was sure her knees would buckle when she heard that, seeing nothing but Dave’s amazing smile, then feeling his lips against her own.
Thank God!
