Work Text:
Dave scrambled into the safety of the Haven for the night. It had been a close call. He’d lost track of time searching for dog tags and only barely made it before sunset. Each dog tag he recovered weighed heavy on his heart, but it helped to know his efforts provided closure to the families of the fallen.
All of Dave’s equipment was still in the truck, but it was a clear night, and there were worse things than sleeping under the stars. He laid down on the stone to watch as the sky darkened and the sparkling stars appeared. Their light was comforting. Dave wasn’t really a religious man, but he liked to think that the souls of the Hunters he’d lost were smiling at him from above, knowing their lives and efforts would never be forgotten.
“Thank you,” Dave said to the stars… just in case they could hear him.
Lulled by the soothing, protective hum of the Haven and knowledge he’d done right by the Hunters who had given their all to help keep their world safe, Dave’s eyes grew heavy.
Tomorrow… he’d have to deliver the bad news to more families, but tonight he’d sleep well.
