Work Text:
His back was facing you as it rose and fell gently with every breath he took. Call it weird or creepy, but as you sat there, watching your husband breathe nearly 10,000 miles away, you felt better. It closed some of the distance and put some sense of normality back into your life.
It was beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.
You found yourself longing for physical contact more than you thought you would. You missed the little things, the way his breath caught as he saw you ‘sleeping’ next to him in the morning, the way he’d claim to not purr but every time you dragged your hands through his coat he’d let out those rumbles, the way he made you feel, his smile, his eyes.
The little things were what you fell in love with.
Milo was not a simple man, he didn't have a base layer and nothing more. He had emotions, insecurities, challenges. But more than that he had memories and triumphs, love and far too much sass. You knew from the day you met him that he was different.
It was odd really, you knew working for DUMP would mean that you had to be away from him for long periods of time but those work trips had never bothered you until you had someone to miss. The isolating loneliness of a new city or country had never phased you until you didn't have him by your side.
A shuffling broke you out of your thoughts, Milo had flipped over so that he was facing you and his eyes cracked open ever so slightly. “Why you still awake sweetheart? I's late, ya should be resting.” His words were slurred and his accent bled into the words more than usual.
“I miss you.” You answered instead, choking up slightly. You really did. The few weeks you had to spend away from him felt like an eternity. You knew it was the job, knew the sacrifices you’d have to make, but it didn't make the distance any smaller or the hurt any easier to manage.
“I miss you too” He whispered out so softly that you swore it could’ve been a simple breeze in the wind. He smiled and you melted, he tended to do that. His smile made a soft feeling glow through your core, spreading all the way up to your cheeks until you felt the softest of grins break out. “God you’re beautiful.” He muttered again, eyes never leaving your face. That was something new for you too. You had never been the first pick or the wanted one.
You were ‘that hot chick's best friend’ or ‘umm, sorry what’s your name again?’. You were the unwanted distraction. Except with Milo, with your husband you never felt like a second choice. You were always his first priority.
“Whatcha thinking about so hard over there?” He smirked, knowing what the blush on your cheeks meant. You rolled your eyes and sighed.
“You”
“Oh? What about me?” He teased, god he didn't know when to quit. You stayed silent, contemplating how much you were going to tell him.
“I was thinking about the fact that I used to not care when I had these trips, but since I met you I despise going on them. I hate not being able to wake up next to you or make breakfast with you or kiss you or just be with you as I fall asleep.” You admitted tiredly, smiling softly as he blushed.
Humming, he responded “I miss you so fucking much. But we only have two more days and then I can go back to smothering you with love.” He winked and you chuckled at his dopey expression.
You leaned forward, placing your head into your hand and staring at his adorableness.
“What?”
You shook your head, “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Smiling, his eyes fluttered shut, exhaustion taking over.
“Goodnight honey.” You yawned, he hummed in response. You stared at him for a few more seconds before you settled down fully to go to sleep. The fatigue took over and the last thing you heard was the telltale click of him taking a screenshot.
That bastard.
