far away, just out of reach.

Summary:

The heat is worse and her heart is pounding she's dizzy and she reaches forward in a measly attempt to try and save the boy–

Iansan wakes up.

She's in her bed. Her vision is on her nightstand, except it is no longer of use to her anymore. The fire that burns inside her is now far too hot for the two to coexist.

or: a day after becoming the new pyro archon, iansan has a dream.

Notes:

found this in our drafts. might as well post it while we write our current project.

Work Text:

Iansans mind is blurry. Which isn't that unheard of in dreams. You don’t really know you’re dreaming nor do you think thoughts and stuff while dreaming. So it feels like a normal dream, except it's not. Re: the previous explanation of how you don't think while dreaming and you never know you’re dreaming.

This is weird because her mind is all blurry and it's all dream-like yet she knows she's asleep and dreaming. She dreams and she knows she’s dreaming and she only really knows that after she’s awake.

The dream is a pretty weird one on its own anyway.

She’s in a wasteland, feet bare and burning. The heat of the sun beats down on her skin and the scent of sulfur assaults her nose. Sweat sticks to her skin and the heatwaves coming up from the black, ash coloured ground warp her surroundings. Its stifling and she can’t hear anything. Not because her ears don’t work but because theres nothing to hear; no wind, no wildlife and her breaths are too quiet to hear them herself.

She is not alone in this wasteland.

Across from her, on the other side of an orange-red river, glowing and burning and sluggish, is a boy who looks like her. The river of magma flows and separates her from him, and its hard to see because the sun is blinding and she’s thirsty even though she shouldn’t be because its a dream.

They have the same green eyes, the same white hair. Her skins darker though; he has a myriad of scars, but not the battle kind, the ‘fell-down-the-stairs’ kind of scars.

“Hello?” she calls out. “You there!”

The boy doesn’t answer, he just continues looking on with a lost, unfocused look in his eyes.

“What are you doing out here?” she asks with a raised voice, she can barely hear it.

Its hot.

“You should get out of here!” she tries again, taking a step forward. He takes a step forward too, mirroring her. “I- its really hot… and- uh… if you’re thirsty I can make water!”

The heat is starting to be loud, roaring in her ears.

It seems that when the boy stepped forward, he couldn’t stop. He starts walking, and walking, he does not stop. He walks and walks and walks and does not care about heat and– he’s going to burn. He’s going to run into that river of magma and ash and– that boy is going to die.

She’s forgotten this is a dream at this point.

(The business of the day makes Iansan forget about the dream anyway. There was still much to be done, as the new Archon of Natlan.)
