Work Text:

“Stop staring, Mary.” Marlene whispers in Mary’s ear, shaking her out of her daydreaming. She’s blushing now too. Merlin, this is embarrassing.

She doesn’t get caught staring. People get caught staring at her, okay? She doesn’t know what’s happening and why Remus has taken over her mind for the last few weeks.

It’s Remus, one of her friends. Lily’s best friend. One of the marauders…

Well, Mary can’t explain why, but she might as well just accept her fate. She fancies Remus. Smart, funny and incredibly hot Remus.

She’s wanted to ask him on a date for a while now, but she’s kind of scared. If she fancied literally anyone else, she wouldn’t even hesitate to ask them out. But this is her friend. It could fuck things up, you know.

Lately, Mary, Lily and Marlene (and by extension Dorcas too) have become quite close to the four marauders. They’re still obnoxious and loud, but at least they’re a bit more mature now. At least they can have a good time without one of them pranking the girls.

Well, that was just Sirius and James, Remus and Peter were tolerable.

Remus is a lot more than just tolerable right now.

He’s sitting in one of the armchairs next to the fire in the common room. Reading one of his stupid books, making him look too hot for his own good.

Mary’s sitting on the big sofa with Marlene and Lily, while the other boys are sprawled on the ground in front of the fire. They’re all talking but Mary is honestly not listening.

That was until Marlene decided to interrupt her (very) impure thoughts.

“Do you want me to wipe the drool off your face?” Marlene laughs, just loud enough for only Mary to hear.

“Shut up.” She replies with an embarrassed smile on her face.

Then, Marlene takes her hand drags her up to their dorm room. To have a little talk apparently. Once she close the door behind her, Marlene says;

“You could ask him out, you know?”

“But it’s Remus.”

“No shit, sherlock. I did figure that one out on my own.”

Mary gives her an unimpressed look before she continues.

“I guess you’re worried because he’s our friend?”

“Well, yeah.” Mary answers. “Normally, the people I fancy are from other houses, or a year above us or whatever. They’re never our friends, you know? So, what if I ask him out and he says no? Urgh – I’ve never had to worry about this shit.”

“Are you done ranting?” Marlene says with a grin. “First of all: if he says no, he’s stupid. Second of all: if he says no, what do you think he’ll do? It’s Remus. He’s not going to be weird about it. And third: I’m pretty sure he won’t say no.”

“And how do you know that? Oh, all-seeing Marlene.” Mary says while rolling her eyes, but there’s no actual heat in the action.

“I might have seen him sneak some glances at you, too. Like, a lot.”

Mary can’t help but blush.

It’s then that Lily enters the dorm. “What are you two whispering about in here?”

“I’m going to ask Remus out on a date” Mary says, a cheeky smile on her face. Marlene may have convinced her just now.

Marlene lets out a joyous laugh and Lily looks in shock. “Remus?”

“Don’t say you haven’t seen Mary gaping at him like he’s some otherworldly creature.

“Oh no, yeah I’ve noticed that.” Lily laughs nervously. She sounds a bit unsure, to be honest, but Mary decides to ignore it for now.

“Okay, I need to plan how I’m going to do it and you both are going to help me.” Mary says, and for the next hour they talk about everything and nothing.

They’re all in charms class right now. Mary is watching the clock tick away. After class going to do it, she’s going to ask Remus out.

She’s nervous, a lot more nervous than she normally would be when asking someone out. If this goes wrong she’ll just not come out of bed for the rest of the year. Seems like a reasonable plan.

When class is finally over and everyone is walking outside, she spots Remus in the crowd.

“Remus!” She almost yells to get his attention. But it works. He turns around, and so do James, Sirius and Peter. Of course…

“What’s up, Mary?” He says with a smile, one Mary can’t get enough of.

“Can I maybe talk to you in private?” She asks him, while watching the three other marauders. And with that they say they’ll meet Remus back in the dorm and off they go.

“Uhm – so, I was thinking… you know this weekend is a Hogsmeade weekend?”

Of course, Remus can guess where this is going. But Mary doesn’t really mind because there’s a blush crawling up his neck. She continues with a grin;

“And I was thinking if maybe you’d want to go together? As a date?”

Their eyes meet and Remus smiles. And because of Remus’ smile, Mary smiles. They’re just two smiling idiots right now.

“yeah, I’d really love to.” He says and oh, Mary could scream. He’d really love to. He’d really love to.

“Great” Mary answers a bit breathless.

“I’ll see you Saturday then.” And with that he gives a quick kiss on Mary’s cheek and walks away. It’s a bit awkward but Mary can feel her face getting hot anyway.

As she’s watching Remus walk away and trying to get her heartbeat back to normal, he looks back at her one more time with that gorgeous smile.

They decided to meet at noon in the entrance hall, so they could walk to Hogsmeade together. And Mary’s already 5 minutes late.

She was freaking out about what to wear, alright? She wanted to look good but the weather was acting weird and let’s just say Mary was frustrated.

In the end she did find something she was happy with, even if it costed her 5 precious minutes.

Remus is already waiting at the door and once he notices she’s walking toward him, his eyes never leave her.

“You look amazing.” He says, looking a bit surprised at his own words.

“Why, thank you. You don’t look too bad yourself.” She smiles at him.

He laughs at that and replies, “Well, it’s pretty much the same thing I wear every day, but thanks.”

“I meant what I said and I said what I meant”

That makes Remus blush, and Mary can’t get enough of it.

“Let’s go, shall we.” She says then.

They walk to Hogsmeade together and talk a little about everything and nothing and it all just feels so natural with him. He makes her laugh and she manages to make him laugh too. Also, Mary loves that she doesn’t have to make a good first impression. Remus is already her friend and they know each other quite well. She can just be her true self.

All in all, the date is going great already. Once they’re seated in The three Broomsticks and have ordered their drinks, Mary asks;

“How’s your study group going, by the way? I heard there’s a lot of people joining.”

“Oh, yeah. I honestly have no clue how it got that popular.” Remus answers.

“I think I know why,” Mary answers with a grin. “People love having you explain things to them, it’s hot.”

“Oh, stop it.” He chuckles. “That’s just a complete lie.” But his cheeks are getting red anyway.

“It’s not a lie, everyone’s got the hots for you, Remus.” She laughs.

“Do you have the hots for me too, then?” Remus challenges.

He’s getting cheeky and Mary loves it. She bites her lip, trying (and failing) to hide her smile.

“I think that me asking you out on this date might be an answer to your question, Remus. Don’t you think?”

You could cut the tension with a knife and Mary enjoys it way too much. After that, though, they’re conversation turns back to something lighter.

“Also –Uhm.” Mary starts. “I’ve wanted to tell you something. Lily and Marlene already know, and I guess telling you would the next step… Uh yeah, so – I’m bi. Sexual, that is.” She laughs a bit nervously.

Remus starts smiling at her.

“Oi!” Mary says, pointing a finger at him, “Don’t go imagining things now. I’m not some fantasy for you to fulfil.” It may come off a bit too aggressive but if Remus is being some pervy prick, she couldn’t care less.

He looks confused at first, frowning a bit. It’s quite cute actually. Until realisation dawns on him and he immediately replies, “No! No, that wasn’t –I didn’t mean it like that.” He’s smiling again now. “It’s just –I’m bi too.”

“Really?” Mary says, a bit baffled, but with a grin on her face.

“Oi!” He says, mocking her. “Don’t go imagining things”

They both burst out laughing. People around them watching them amusedly.

It’s starting to get late once they’re walking back to the castle. They’re both not saying anything, but it’s a comfortable silence and Mary could get used to it. She feels safe with him.

Their hands brush and Mary tries her hardest not to make an undignified noise. That is until Remus actually takes her hand and intertwines their fingers and Mary can’t help but let out a quiet giggle. Which makes Remus chuckle too.

Once they reach the entrance to Hogwarts, Remus stops right before they go inside, tugging Mary’s hand gently so she’ll come a bit closer.

“I really had an amazing day and I – I would be lying if I said I didn’t hope for it to happen again.”

They’re standing very close. It’s getting darker outside but there’s still light enough for Mary to make out the freckles on his face along the scar going from his eyebrow, over his nose. She wants to kiss the freckles, every single one of them.

“Are you asking me out on a second date, Remus?” She asks with a grin.

He steps a bit closer, “I am, yeah.” He says, a bit breathless.

“Good.”

“Can I kiss you?” Remus asks and all Mary can do is nod.

Remus leans in and Mary meets him halfway. Their lips touch and Mary is done for. One of his hands is on her cheek, the other on her waist and she can feel her knees almost buckle.

He pushes her against the wall. It’s hot. So very, insanely hot. Mary’s hand, that was resting on Remus’ side, slides lower and It’s clear he’s holding back a moan.

He starts kissing her neck while simultaneously pulling Mary’s leg up. His hand holding her thigh like his life depends on it.

This can never end, Mary thinks. She wants to stay in this moment forever. Have his lips on her neck and his hands all over her body.

“Should we maybe –Should we take this somewhere more private?” Mary barely chokes out.

He gives her another kiss on her lips before he agrees and takes her hand, leading her to his dorm.
