    “It’s…” John trails off, mouth suddenly feeling a little dry despite having just drank water. What is it? Lemar is patiently waiting for his answer and John can’t even admit out loud that it’s not what he wants. He doesn’t want this title, doesn’t want the expectations that come with it, and he certainly doesn’t want to be viewed differently because of some name change. He is John Walker but he will never be Captain America. What is wrong with him? Why can’t he just say that?

    “You okay?” Lemar asks softly, reminding him of his presence but not urging him to answer. And honestly? John doesn’t feel okay. He doesn’t know how to say it out loud, perhaps afraid of how the truth may change Lemar’s perception of him. He feels a little guilty for thinking that; Lemar’s not the kind of guy who’d switch up on someone for expressing their feelings, John knows that. But he’s still so scared to say what he’s thinking. John thinks the government must’ve really messed up if they chose someone like him to represent justice and integrity. How could he be Captain America when he’s already having these doubts?

    He takes a deep breath, holds it for a while, and remembers that it’s only him and Lemar here. It’s his partner; he knows he can speak his mind.

    “I don’t think I’m cut out for this,” he finally admits quietly. He’s not looking at Lemar, instead choosing to stare at the bottle in his hands. He doesn’t want to see his partner’s face as he admits that he might be too weak for this.

    John had never been alone before.

    He swept Olivia off her feet in high school and she swept him off his, and they got married right out of their senior year. Before that he was with his birth family, and after that he was with his found family, or his work family when he was away from home.

    It worked for him. He was such an extrovert that the idea of being alone never even occurred to him. There was always someone, either to go to or to come home to. Lemar and Liv were pillars in his two major places of life.

    Then, just like that, within a month, they were both gone.

    At the same time Natasha says no, Alexei answers, “Yes, of course, Captain America! She’s my oldest daughter! She is original Thunderbolt!”

    Natasha blinks a couple of times registering the name and what it means. Bucky at least doesn’t blame her for being thrown for a loop by her dad running into the middle of her new team’s headquarters and slapping the name of her childhood soccer team on the group of interesting people they’ve collected. Not to mention Bucky himself, who he really hopes she doesn’t recognize.

    Tony turns to Natasha, eyes gleaming, and says, “Your dad is Soviet Captain America?”

    “Jesus Christ, Alexei, you're not my father.”

    Bucky watches as Steve Rogers takes to John Walker like a duck to water.

    John is doing a good job hiding his hero worship or at the very least, Steve is blind enough to the admiration painted on John’s face that he does not yet realize that John idolizes him. Steve’s fondness might have surprised Bucky when he first met Walker. That meeting was not long after Steve died, and right after Sam gave up the shield and swiftly the Army gave it to John; Bucky was too blinded by grief and the whole he’s not Steve Rogers of it all for that meeting to have gone well. For him to have understood that John and Steve were cut from the same cloth, bred with same emotions and blind determination.

    But after a year of the New Avengers living together, Bucky understands exactly why Steve is drawn to John. He knows more than anything that they would have even liked each other if given the chance to know each other. Bucky can recognize now in hindsight that he and Sam were unfair back during the whole Flag Smasher thing. That John, at his core, is still an army boy who’d grown up with pictures of Steve Rogers and the Howling Commandos on his wall. He’s still the kid who’d written reports in his US History classes on the tragedy of Captain American and Sergeant Barnes.

    Bucky reached out slowly and caught the sleeve of John’s uniform with shaking fingers. “Don’t go,” he said. Not commanding. Not sharp. Just… scared. “Please. Don’t leave me again, Stevie.”

    Something in John cracked. He should’ve corrected him. Should’ve said I’m not Steve. Should’ve shut this down before it turned into something cruel. But Bucky looked at him like he was home. So John stayed. He let Bucky talk through the haze—half-memories, half-confessions. About Brooklyn. About trains and guilt and the way Steve used to look at him like he was worth saving, even when the world said otherwise. Bucky mumbled about their childhood and how desperately he wished he could go back.
