Work Text:

“Why are we coming here again?”

Judd sighs, because this is the fiftieth time Wyatt has complained about having to leave the house. “Because, you have barely left the house the past two weeks, and that’s not healthy-”

“Says who ?” Wyatt whines.

“Says me,” Judd snaps. He stops once they reach the bakery Judd has made them walk to. It’s only about a ten minute walk from their house, but Wyatt rarely leaves the house these days which means he gets very little exercise so of course he complained about the long walk the whole time. “Now shut your mouth, and let’s go get some cupcakes because it’s Halloween and we need to be more festive.”

“Halloween is still a week away,” Wyatt points out.

“October first is when Halloween starts,” Judd argues as he opens the door, allowing Wyatt to walk in first. Judd looks around the bakery shop, and instantly notices how the shop is decorated all cutesy for Halloween. Judd tried to decorate their house, but gave up pretty quickly.

“Hi, welcome to Mr. Sugarcakes. Is there anything I can help you with today?”

Judd looks up and stops as soon as his eyes land on the woman behind the counter, because she was the most beautiful woman Judd had ever laid eyes on.

Wyatt looks over at his dad and rolls his eyes when he sees him staring. He reaches over and nudges him harshly. “Dad,” he hisses. “Stop staring. You’re being creepy.”

Judd startles, and looks over at Wyatt. “I’m not being creepy,”

“You kind of are,” the woman says.

Judd looks back over at the woman, blinking. “Uh-”

“Is there anything I can help you with, sir?” She asks once more, raising her eyebrows.

Judd makes a face after being called ‘sir’. “Ugh. Please, call me Judd. My father is sir,” he says. “Uh, well… My son and I were looking to buy some of your delicious Halloween cupcakes. I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about them from my mother.”

The woman raises her eyebrows. “Wow. You’re quite the family guy, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, and it’s really annoying,” Wyatt mumbles, but Judd hears it loud and clear.

Judd instantly glares at him. “Boy, if you don’t-”

“What? Are you going to ground me, dad? As if I’m going to complain about being stuck in the house,” Wyatt says, raising his eyebrows as he crosses his arms against his chest.

“You are the only kid on Earth who’s grounding punishment is being forced to go outside,” Judd says, before shaking his head. He looks over at the woman. “Anyways, your Halloween cupcakes.”

“Of course. How many are you looking for?” She asks, walking over to the register.

“It’s just for the two of us, well… maybe I should pick up a couple extra for my parents too,” Judd says. “My mom would kill me if she knew I came here and didn’t get her anything.”

She nods. “How about a pack of six various Halloween cupcakes for ten dollars?”

“That sounds perfect, thank you,” Judd says, pulling out his wallet and giving the woman the exact cash.

“Thank you. I’ll have those ready for you in just a moment,” the woman says, before wandering off.

“Take your time,” Judd says quietly, his eyes never leaving her as she walks away from the counter.

“Dad, you’re so embarrassing,” Wyatt groans, slapping his hand over his face.

Judd huffs, and looks over at Wyatt. “I’m not embarrassing. If you wanna see something embarrassing, I can just bring your grandpappy next time we come here and then you’ll be embarrassed.”

Wyatt’s eyes widen as he looks at his dad. “There’s going to be a next time?”

“Really? That’s the part you’re worried about?” Judd asks, raising his eyebrows.

“We are definitely not bringing grandpa with us next time!” Wyatt exclaims.

“That’s exactly what I thought,” Judd says, grinning.

The two only have to wait about five minutes before the woman comes back with a box of cupcakes in her hands. She walks around the counter, walking up to Judd, and opens the cupcakes, showing them.

“How about that, champ? Those look delicious,” Judd says as soon as he sees the cupcakes.

“I can’t lie. Those do look delicious,” Wyatt agrees, nodding.

“Well, I hope they taste as delicious for you,” she says, and hands Judd the box.

“I’m sure they will, uh…?”

“Grace,” she tells him.

“Grace,” Judd repeats, and he locks eyes with her. “It’s uh, it’s nice to meet you Grace, and I’m sure the cupcakes will taste delicious.” He holds the box up.

“Dad,” Wyatt groans, letting out a sigh. “We have to go, and you have to start your shift in a half an hour, and Captain Strand will not be happy that you’re late because you were too busy making googly eyes at the nice woman who made us cupcakes.”

Judd looks over at Wyatt. “You are in so much-”

“Nope!” Wyatt shouts, running out of the bake shop.

Grace giggles as she watches Wyatt, before looking back at Judd. “You two are quite the interesting pair,” she says, looking up at Judd. “I hope you’ll come back soon.”

Judd looks back over at Grace, and he nods. “We will definitely be back.”

Judd keeps to his promise the very next day after raving about Grace’s cupcakes to his firehouse team, and they demand that he bring cupcakes to his next shift so they can all taste the cupcakes.
