Work Text:
Rui was weird. Nene knew this.
He was weird in the sense that he didn’t comply with what society told him he should be. He had his own internal rulebook that he stubbornly refused to deviate from just for the sake of “fitting in”. He did not enjoy the activities your average person did. He could ramble endlessly about those interests as well. He would talk about his latest invention with no restraint, no regret. In that aspect, she almost envied him. Almost.
Her envy was often over-taken by pure admiration. Though she would never say anything more than a snarky remark or let out an exasperated sigh when he mentioned a particularly dangerous function of his robot, she sat and listened. She ate up every word with glee. There was something about the way he strung words together, the way his eyes sparkled and his smirk widened as he babbled on about all the possibilities there were. It was like everyone but him faded away, and it was just him and his stupid smirk and his stupid expressions and his stupid robots.

Nene was weird. Rui knew this.
He had known this from the moment they met. She was shy, incredibly shy. She was terrified of people, even. She was terrified of letting those same people down. She preferred to hide away. He was pretty sure she’d make herself invisible if she could. Yet, she still had a spark to her. She was sarcastic and straight-forward, determined and hard-working. She didn’t speak much, but when she did it was like eating sour candy. Her somewhat harsh words were not for everyone, but there was an undeniable sweetness in the sound of her voice.
She was certainly a unique specimen. But she stuck with him all these years. And for that, he was willing to move mountains for her. Joining Wonderlands x Showtime, building Robo-Nene, it was for her. Always for her. To make sure she still smiled, and that her spark didn’t burn out.

Rui was weird. He was abnormal by societal standards. He was probably a little crazy.
Nene was weird. She was socially anxious. She was full of sarcasm and brutal honesty.
They were both weird. They were aware of this. And that was okay. At the end of the day, they had each other. And that was all that truly mattered.
