Work Text:
Sam knew he was breaking protocol. He'd promised himself to never break it, but he couldn't make himself chase after the sounds of explosions from outside the prison.
He instead found himself frantically looking for away to get the intercom to work, to tell Tommy that everything would be okay.
He tried again and again, but there was only static and the echoes of explosions.
It was taking to long, he needed to reassure Tommy soon, he need to do his job.
His job was making sure the prisoner never escaped, so it would only make sense to check if he was in his cell. To make sure he was still locked away, away from Tommy.
Sam ignored the increasing sounds of explosions and focused only on the mechanical clicking of his creation. He knew how the prison worked, he could get inside the cell and he did.
The cell was the same as it always was, but Tommy was lying on the floor unconscious.
"What did you do to him." The Warden asked. Dream smiled.
"I didn't do anything Sam."
"This isn't nothing. I am the warden right now do not act friendly with me." Dreams laughs, it fit perfectly with the echoes of explosions he always seemed to be around.
"I didn't do a thing, didn't hurt him, I was just telling him how nice it was to have a friend." Dream tapped his fingers on them wall. "Well then Sam, you and I both know if you were the Warden. You wouldn't be here, or maybe the Warden has a soft spot now."
"You hurt him."
"I just told you I never laid a hand on him."
"You don't need to hit him to hurt him."
"Now Mister Warden changing the subject isn't like you at all. It would be much easier if you admitied to caring for him."
"I care for no one. I'm the Warden."
"Now that's clearly a lie. If you truly cared for no one you wouldn't be here, standing all defensive in front of Tommy. You have a job to do and it looks to me like you aren't doing it."
"I am. I'm making sure you haven't escaped, otherwise I'll be forced take your final life."
"Taking someone's final life is a heavy burden to bear Sam, although I don't doubt you'll be able to kill me. You might have a much harder time with my acomplice."
"So you admit this is an attempted prison escape." Dream gave a quiet hum and nodded. "Then I am required to take their final life as well."
"Sweet Sam has turned over a new leaf and changed his morals I see."
"As Warden it is my job to keep you in prison."
Dream smiles and darts forward. He kicks Sam's legs, Sam stumbles before lunging forward. Dream dodges and heads towards Tommy. Grabbing Tommy's wrist and pulling him from the floor.
Dream drags him quickly, back against the wall. Holding Tommy up like a shield before Sam could reach.
It makes Sam sick, how he let this happen and how uncairingly Dream holds Tommy up.
"Well then the Warden failed."
The explosions that had been going at a steady pace begain to grow louder. The space between each blast growing smaller.
The cell begins to shake violently.
"It was great doing business with you Sam."
With a final shake and shudder the ceiling of the cell caves. Dream watches as Sam fall to his own creation. The dust settles and Dream still stands.
The part of the ceiling he is under barely hanging on, just as he planned. A white hand reaches down, extending it for him. Dream reaches with one hand, the other holding roughly on to Tommy's sleeve.
He sees the sun start to rise for the first time in ages. He smiles, not for the warmth that the sun brings but rather how he is one day closer to completing his plan. Day by day he's closer to finishing his goal.
And that was all he could ever ask for.
