Chapter Text
The sun shined through the blinds, the warmth of spring felt though the blankets. Benny found himself annoyed with the nice weather though, as the light hit him right in the eyes, waking him early from his slumber. The nice dream he'd been having fading away.
He grumbled, turning over. Maybe he could fall back asleep. But it was too late, he was already awake, and there was no going back. Getting up, he checked the time. Seven in the morning. He's normally up earlier, but last night he spent a lot of his energy making spaceships for his friends. It was fun, but it left him drained. Either way, he had no choice but to get up and start the day.
Putting on a pair of sweatpants, and struggling to find a clean shirt, he walked into the kitchen. Looking for something simple and quick but nice to make, he settled on scrambled eggs and got to cooking. He had been cooking for about three minutes when he got a knock at the door. "One second, I'm coming! Just let me not burn my eggs!" He called, earning a chuckle from a voice he couldn't quite recognize. He hurried and finished the eggs, throwing them in the fridge, before he rushed to the door. When he got there, he was greeted by an all too familiar orange vest. "Emmet!" He smiled. "Hey Ben!"
"Come on in." They walked a few steps inside, standing in the hall.
"What's up, your normally at work by now?" Emmet looked down for a moment. "Yeah I uh... Broke my car."
"Uh oh. How'd that happen?"
"I spilled coffee in the engine."
"Want a ride then?" Benny chuckled, though in reality he was really glad for this opportunity. Sure he felt bad about the car, but his cheeks grew warm with every smile from Emmet. Every laugh, every joke, every little thing he did that made him... Him. He couldn't help it, those thoughts filled almost every waking moment of his lately, and some of his dreams.
They both got in the car, slightly in a rush due to the fact Emmet was about to be late. As they got going, Benny toon this as an opportunity to start a conversation. "Hey, so how have you been?" He asked. "I've been alright. Not much to do lately though. Oh-- unless you count Valentine's day!" He exclaimed. "I uh... I think I'm gonna ask Lucy to be my Valentine, you think it'll work out?"
It was asked without the slightest hesitation, not one extra second of thought. It hit Benny in the chest hard. How could he have forgotten about Valentine's day? And now Emmet said something that so obviously meant to Benny that he was in the friend zone, nothing more. Damn did it hurt.
"Benny, you good?"
"Oh- yeah, sorry! You two would be great together, I can't wait!"
"Thanks, neither can I!" They stopped at the construction site.
"You sure I can't pay you for the wasted gas?" Emmet asked. "Nah, it's fine. Making spaceships is a high paying job." And then he left, just like that. The happy starting day, the sunshine, the eggs, seeing the love of his life. Crushed. And the fresh scrambled eggs still in the fridge, likely never to get eaten. Holding back tears till he got home, he ran inside. Grabbing a blanket and wrapping himself up on the couch, he let the tears fall. Fuck. He should've made a move sooner, maybe then it would've been different. Maybe there's still a chance, if he could just--
No. There was no chance. He shouldn't push any farther, it was over. He laid down, still wrapped in his cocoon, searching for the TV remote.
Finding it and ignoring the buzzing his phone was now doing, he turned on the TV. Currently some show about the prices of jewelry was what was on, and he didn't bother to change the channel. Instead he curled up, burying his head in is pillow. He stayed like that untill--
"Hello Benny!"
He almost jumped to the sound of his door opening with a slam, an overly energetic pinked haired Uni-kitty bursting through. She stopped in her tracks, seeing Benny's face. Slowly she closed the door, lowering her voice to a whisper. "Aw, I'm sorry, bad timing I guess. You wanna talk about it?" Before Benny could stop himself, he ended up pouring his whole heart out his friend. Maybe he just needed someone to talk to. "Oh Benny, I'm sorry that happened. Sadly though, Emmets been eyeing Lucy since he first laid eyes on her...You know what, how about I take you to the mall? That should help cheer you up. But only if your up to it." "Yeah, I could use some fun, I guess. Thanks, Uni-Kitty."
