“You sure you don’t want to go around one more time, Blue? I mean, I’m doing it. I know those people were holding back on the good candy earlier.”
“No, I… I’d really better go,” Chrom says. “It’s getting late.”
“Seriously?” Gaius chuckles. “I know you’re the ‘early to bed, early to rise’ type, but can’t you make an exception for holidays? The Harvest Festival only comes once a year! Even if you don’t want more candy, you could give it to me.”
“Sorry,” Chrom mutters. “I— Urgh…”
“Oh… All that sugar not agreeing with you, eh? Well, don’t make yourself sick…”
“Sorry,” Chrom repeats, breaking away from Gaius at the next street.
A shadowy, abandoned alleyway isn’t the ideal place to be at this time of night, but Chrom doesn’t have much of a choice. He hurries forward, his path lit only by the full moon that has almost fully risen now.
He doesn’t get very far before he catches the sound of breathing just ahead of him. He’s on his guard at once.
“Well, well, well… You’re a sharp one to notice me…”
The voice comes from above, but before Chrom can look up, someone slings an arm around his shoulders.
“But not sharp enough to escape me,” his assailant whispers into his ear.
Chrom turns his head, meeting the red eyes of a man dressed up as a wolf, ears and tail and all.
Chrom gulps. This guy is awfully cute… And totally out of line.
“What’s the meaning of this?” he asks.
“Robin, you’re scaring him,” a new voice breaks in.
A woman dressed in a similar, though slightly different, wolf costume jumps down from the roof of a nearby building. She’s awfully cute as well… By some magical power, she floats gently to Chrom’s side, taking him by the elbow.
“Robin, I’ve got this one—”
“And now I’ve got him, too.”
“You’re both named Robin? That’s— Urgh…”
“Don’t worry,” the woman says saccharinely, “we’ll make sure you get home safe. We just need one little thing…”
“Your candy. Now.” The man’s grip on Chrom’s shoulder tightens. “We know you’ve been to the Harvest Festival…”
“But I— Urgh…”
Chrom’s groan turns into a growl. The moon’s call can no longer be resisted.
The Robins back away from him as his body shifts into a canine shape. That won’t do. There aren’t any other wolves in this place. He won’t let these ones get away.
He lunges for the female, but she dodges him, taking to the sky. Confused, Chrom sniffs the air. The scent these two give off is strange… It isn’t like his kin’s, but nor is it that of the humans he prowls this town to protect. It is definitely not the scent of prey… but though danger prickles his pelt, these not-wolves do not strike him as his enemies, either.
Not tonight, at least.
“I think he wants to play with us.” The female laughs.
“What an unexpected treat,” the male says, grinning.
