Kringgg–
Megumi turns off his alarm, gets out of bed, and walks to the bathroom.
He brushes his teeth and takes a quick bath. He shivers from the cold morning water.
When he finishes his morning routine, the fragrant smell of roasted coffee and the delicious smell of toasted bread with bacon and cheese have filled the kitchen. He walks toward the kitchen and finds Gojo Satoru-Satoru-nii almost finished making breakfast as usual.
“Good morning, Megumi! Here’s your favorite black coffee! Today we’re having toast with bacon and cheese. I’m sorry I woke up a little late so I can make a better breakfast than this.”
Satoru-nii said with a bright smile plastered on his face as he handed the mug to Megumi.
“It’s okay, Satoru-nii.”
Megumi quickly replies, he sits and starts eating his breakfast. He almost squeals in delight because of how good it is.
Megumi watches as Satoru-nii sits in front of him, facing him and enjoying his own breakfast.
Megumi always thought that he was a really lucky child.
Megumi was 6 years old when he met Satoru-nii for the first time.
On that day, Megumi had just finished mourning his dead father, Fushiguro Toji. Toji might not the best father figure in Megumi’s life but the older man still took care of and raised Megumi alone and Megumi was grateful to him.
Megumi is an orphan. His mother died shortly after giving birth to him and his father died in a car accident along with his step mother and step sister. His father’s family, the Zen’in, was reluctant to adopt him since the relationship between Toji and his family wasn’t the best. Toji even changed his surname in spite of his family.
Megumi almost ended up in some random orphanage if not for Gojo Satoru.
Satoru-nii, still on his early twenties, approached him that day, saying that he was Toji friend and intended to adopt Megumi as his ward. Satoru-nii said that he was Toji’s good friend and couldn’t bear knowing his good friend’s son would end up in orphanage.
Megumi didn’t remember much of the details, but he knew that Satoru-nii managed to finish the paperwork on that day. Since then, Megumi had been living together with Satoru-nii in one of Satoru-nii’s apartments in Minato.
Satoru-nii is 17 years older than Megumi and he works as the CEO and owner of Gojo Company, one of the biggest and richest companies in Japan–currently the richest one.
Megumi admires Satoru-nii so much and sometimes, he felt like he didn’t deserve Satoru-nii affection. But of course, Satoru always assured him that he deserved all the luxury he got.
“Megumi, better finish your breakfast now. It’s almost time for your departure.”
Megumi snaps, he looks at his watch.
Fuck, he won’t make it to the bus station. Guess he will take the longer route today. Megumi quickly eats the rest of his toast.
“Woah, slow down, Megumi! It’s alright, Today I will take you to your school.”
Satoru-nii offers
“Are you sure, Satoru-nii, your office is-“
“It’s fine! I’m their boss. Nobody dares to scold me! I’m your guardian, Megumi. It’s my duty to make sure your needs are fulfilled.”
Megumi just nods, obeying his guardian.
“Come on, a role model student like you shouldn’t come late to school, right?”

Luckily, Megumi arrives on time. He quickly goes to his classroom and sits in his seat. Not long after that, Itadori Yuuji and Kugisaki Nobara, his only friends and best friends, come to his table.
“It’s rare to see you arrive this late, Megumi.”
“Yeah, did something happen?”
The two of them asked worriedly
“Nothing happened! I’m just… having a lot of mind.”
They’re currently in their last year, they have nothing to do but worry about their career choice and path.
“Oh yeah, have you decided Megumi? With your smartass brain, it’s practically possible for you to apply to any university you want! I mean, our school is the best in Tokyo and you’re the best student in our year! Mr. Hizashi wouldn’t think twice about giving you a recommendation.”
Nobara blabbers as she drags a chair and sits on it.
“Nobara is right, I think this is a good opportunity for you! I’ve heard some gossip that said you got a ton of offers, Megumi. I mean, you’ve never left Tokyo before–I’m not saying that’s a bad thing but you should give it a chance!”
Yuuji encourages him, Nobara nods beside him
“I’m not sure… just like you said, I’ve never left Tokyo before… I don’t think Satoru-nii would allow me. He always worries a lot about me.”
Nobara sighs.
“You know, your “Satoru-nii” is spoiling you rotten! That’s no good! You should give it a try! Here, look at this!”
Nobara pulls a magazine from her bag and opens it.
“How about this university, Megumi? I heard they’re have a great curriculum and supportive a environment. Also, it’s in Canada, Megumi! Canada! I always want to go there.”
Nobara says excitedly, Megumi swears that he sees her eyes spark.
“Oh, that university? I think I know someone who also wanted to go there. You know Wataru Kenji from class 12-C?”
Yuuji chimes in.
“Oh! I bet he will be so happy if you apply to same university as him.”
Nobara teases him.
“Huh, why?”
“Duh, he admires you, Dummy! I swear you’re like the smartest person I know but you’re so unaware of your popularity.”
Megumi doesn’t understand. He always remembers himself as bad luck for other. Nobody wanted him as he always brings misfortune for those who are close to him–only Satoru-nii is an exception since the older man is really cautious, self-aware, and strongest-the last statement was from the man himself, Megumi doesn’t know why. He remembered always being blamed and shunned by others since he was in elementary school. It’s a miracle that Yuuji and Nobara are still fine despite being close to Megumi since they were in junior high school. So, knowing that there’s someone who admires him is… strange.
Megumi doesn’t know that he’s actually really popular in school. People are just afraid to talk with him, especially since he is a role model student.
“I can help introduce him to you. I heard that Wataru-kun already prepared a lot of things. You can ask him if you’re interested, Megumi.”
Megumi nods. There’s no harm in trying, right? It’s not like he will immediately agree.
“Good morning, class. Now let’s start our morning with-“
“Shoot! Ms. Himeko has already come!”
“Alright, let’s talk again later guys!”
Yuuji and Nobara quickly scrambled to their respective seats, the morning class started.
Wataru Kenji, by Megumi standard, is kind and polite. Wataru-kun is one of Yuuji’s basketball teammates, and he, just like Yuuji, an outgoing and fun person. It doesn’t take a long time for Megumi to become comfortable with him. The boy talks about everything he finds about his dream university passionately and Megumi enjoys hearing it. He is also really good at persuading people since Megumi is really tempted to go.
“-You should give it a try, Fushiguro-kun! We can share an apartment together since our faculties are near-of course if you want to!”
“Ah, thank you. Sorry for bothering you.”
“You’re not a bother! I can’t believe that I actually managed to talk with you. You’re not arrogant as the rumor said.”
Huh, rumor? Well, there’s a ton of them and no one can control it so Megumi doesn’t really care.
“Anyway, if you decide to come, we could take care of the administration together since it will be faster if you don’t mind!”
“Thank you so much, Wataru-kun. See you later.”

Since then, Megumi often spends his time with Wataru. After a full month, Megumi decides to take that opportunity and he already has a long and detailed plan about things he needs to do.
But first, he must tell and convince Satoru-nii first.
Megumi’s heart beat fast as he heard the door open
“Megumi, I’m home! I brought some donuts for snack!”
Satoru calls him, putting the donut box on the dining table. Megumi prepares some hot chocolate for their drinks.
“Ugh, all of my clients were shitty today.”
Satoru wails as he sits down and grabs a piece of chocolate donut and eats it
“As I expected, eating sweets after a bad day truly lifts your mood-huh, Megumi? What’s wrong? Why are you just sitting there and staring at the donut?”
Megumi quickly shakes his head
“No! I’m just… uh…”
Megumi hesitates, should he tell Satoru-nii now? But Satoru-nii just came back from work and probably tired. He shouldn’t bother him now…
“It’s fine to tell me everything, Megumi. I’m your guardian after all.”
Satoru-nii coaxes him with his gentle voice, Megumi really couldn’t win against this.
“It’s nothing Satoru-nii. I-uh… Actually, I’m planning to study abroad after graduating from high school. I already found a university I like and I also have a friend who will help me adjust to my life there. This may sound really random coming out from me but I think I want to try to be independent-It’s not like I’m not gratefull to Satoru-nii! I’m just…Uh-“
Satoru laughs, ruffling Megumi’s hair.
“Hahaha! It’s fine, Megumi! You look so cute flustering like that! I also think this is a good opportunity! Ah, my little Megumi-chan is ready to leave his nest! Satoru-nii will be so lonely!”
Satoru fakes tearing up
“I promise I will call Satoru-nii often.”
“You better be, Megumi or I will keep budging you! By the way, who’s this so-called friend that will help you? I’m curious since Megumi is a really antisocial child! Your friends only consist of Yuuji-kun and Nobara-chan and it took a lot of effort from them to become this close with you.”
Satoru asks, stirring his hot chocolate
“Ah, it’s Wataru Kenji-kun. He is Yuuji’s friend and we became friends around last month. He’s really a good person, he reminds me of Yuuji.”
Megumi answers
“Aw, my Megumi is growing up really well! You made your Satoru-nii want to cry, you know?”
“Stop being dramatic, Satoru-nii.”
Megumi sighs at his guardian’s antics but he’s secretly relieved. He thought Satoru-nii would be against it since the two of them always stayed together since Satoru-nii adopted him.
“I’m just joking. You have my blessing, Megumi. If you need my hand sign, just tell me. I will gladly give it.”
Megumi perks up
“Thank you so much, Satoru-nii!”

It’s been a few months since Megumi got Satoru’s blessing. The administration process went smoothly and he’s now waiting for his acceptance.
He opens his classroom door and finds a lot of his classmates crowding in front of the class and mumbling about something.
Megumi is curious but he decides not to mind about it. He walks toward his seat and instantly Yuuji and Nobara approach him.
“Have you heard the news, Megumi?”
Yuuji asks, his expression telling him that something is wrong, Yuuji rarely looked this down.
“What news?”
Nobara facepalmed.
“Wataru-kun was hit by a drunk driver yesterday. It happened at night and there weren’t many witnesses but they said he died in the spot. It was quite brutal and unfortunate.”
Megumi freezes
“A-ah…”
He couldn’t say anything.
Before he could process and rearranging his mind, he hears someone called his name.
“Fushiguro Megumi-kun? Come here, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Ms. Tachibana, his school counselor, calls him, Megumi numbly follows her to her office.
He never thought that he would be hit by two massive storms like this.
“I’m so sorry to inform you this but unfortunately, your application has been rejected. They don’t really say the reason. I’m so sorry that I can’t help anything about this.”
Ah
Not only lost a friend, he failed also
“I-it’s fine, Ms. Tachibana. Thank you so much for your help in this past month.”
Megumi bows before leaving the counselor room, holding back his tears.
Outside the office, he finds Yuuji and Nobara already waiting for him. They look really concerned. Megumi couldn’t hold back his tears after seeing them and cried.
Yuuji and Nobara take him to a secure place and try to calm him down.
“It’s alright, Megumi. You’re too good for them, anyway.”
Yuuji tries to cheer him up while Nobara looks not so happy.
“This is suspicious. How can Megumi get rejected but Iwate-san manage to get accepted there? Are they blind or something? There’s no way Iwate-san who only ranked 5 or something could beat you, the rank 1 in our year!”
Nobara’s voicing her frustration, feeling one of her best friends doesn’t get justice.
“Calm down, Nobara. I’m also upset about this but what can we do.”
Yuuji, still trying to calm Megumi down now needs to calm Nobara down before the said girl storms the counselor’s office.
“I knew it! Her family must be bribed them to make Megumi fail! You know, Iwate-san is from a super rich family, I heard her father owns-“
“Nobara, please don’t talk nonsense! What if someone hears us?!”
Yuuji panicky cuts Nobara
“Fine, only because I don’t want Ms. Tachibana to bite my ass.”
Yuuji sighs in relief, why his two best friends are like this…
“So, what are you going to do now, Megumi?”
Yuuji carefully asks Megumi
“I don’t know… maybe I will let Satoru-nii decide it for me…”
Megumi could see the disappointed look on Nobara’s face.
“Duh! You’re really a spoiled rotten child! Stop depending on your guardian like that, Megumi!”
Nobara scolds him.
“Yeah Megumi, I mean since your guardian allowed you to study abroad, how about coming with us to Miyagi? I’m going to the police academy there and Nobara is aiming for Sendai University. We could rent an apartment together!”
Megumi perks up at the idea. He always wanted to live together with his best friends. May be this is not a bad idea. They had been friends for almost six years and both Yuuji and Nobara never gott into some kind of freak accident because of him.
“I will think about it… Nobara wants to pursue criminology, right?”
“Yep! I will be the greatest of them. Just watch me!”
“Well, Nobara and I could be partner in crime tho? You should become forensic doctor, Megumi. The three of us could become the best investigation team ever!”
Both Yuuji and Nobara then laugh, Megumi also giggles a little bit, clearly feeling much better than before.
Unfortunately, those dreams are easily crushed.
Yuuji somehow got tangled up in a clan fight and passed away due to a fatal injury to his head. Nobara was killed in a robbery, the robber was panicked when he tried to run away, madly attacking anybody in his sight.
Megumi is devastated. He locks himself inside his room.
He couldn’t even be allowed to attend both of his best friends’ funerals.
“I’m always telling my daughter to leave that boy alone but she always said that she’s fine but look now! That boy truly brings bad luck!”
“I’m sorry. Megumi-kun. I don’t think I can allow you to come to Yuuji’s funeral. Our parents are really devastated and I'm afraid that they will harm you if they see you since they’re against your friendship with Yuuji-don’t worry I don’t blame you for this. It was just bad luck.”
He’s truly a bad luck
He always brings bad luck to other people.
“Megumi… hey Megumi… can I enter?”
Megumi could hear Satoru-nii’s soft voice, filled with concern
“Um.”
He weakly answers
“Oh my poor Megumi, it’s alright, Satoru-nii is here.”
He hugs the crying boy, Megumi is sobbing in Satoru-nii’s embrace.
“Satoru-nii… would you also leave me like Yuuji and Nobara? Would it be better for me to stay away from Satoru-nii so Satoru-nii wouldn’t get caught in bad luck?”
Satoru gently smiles at him and pats his head
“Of course not, Megumi. I promise that I’ll always be with you. You’re not a bad omen, Megumi. you’re my blessing. Just don’t mind those baseless accusations.”
“Satoru-nii will always be with Megumi. Satoru-nii would never leave Megumi.”
The two of them stayed like that for a while before Megumi calmed down enough to come out of his room.
“Satoru-nii.”
“Yes, Megumi?”
“C-could I have a year break before continuing my studies? I don’t think I can do it right now…”
“It’s alright, Megumi. Satoru-nii will always support your decision. You can take as much of a break as you want."
“Thank you so much, Satoru-nii.”
"Anything for you, Megumi."

“-Could you believe it, Suguru? My Megumi finally agreed to stay at home! Ah, I can’t believe that yesterday Megumi greeted me while he was cooking and wearing an apron! It feels like we are husband and wife, you know?”
Satoru daydreams inside his office. In front of his desk, there’s Geto Suguru, his right-hand and most trusted man.
“Still, don’t you think this is too much for Megumi, Satoru?”
Suguru asks as he reads a few documents about the stabbing accident and clan war. Good, it went up just as he predicted.
“Megumi really tested my patience back then. I almost blew up when he said that he wanna study abroad, Suguru! I’ve been raising him since he was six and always fulfilled his wishes. How could he do this to me?! Am I not good enough for him?”
Satoru dramatically answers, Suguru just shakes his head. His boss truly has some loose screws inside his head.
“I understand with Wataru-kun and bribing the school, but Yuuji-kun and Nobara-san? I think you went overboard.”
Satoru just gives him a dangerous grin
“Well, they’re such useful pawns since they’re keeping Megumi safe so I let them live. But lately, they have been snooping around and trying to separate Megumi and I. I’m basically just getting rid of potential threats. Besides, with their death, Megumi became much clingier to me so it’s a win-win situation!”
Suguru has known this little secret since he met Megumi for the first time.
Megumi is Fushiguro Toji, one of their ex-members, son. Toji betrayed their clan and ran away with some important documents and money. Luckily, they managed to catch him before he fled away. Satoru was so furious and killed Toji along with his wife and daughter. He disguised it as a car crash. He wanted to kill Toji’s son in spite but he soon dismissed the idea once he saw Megumi. He started to become obsessed with Megumi.
Everything Megumi had done was basically crafted by Satoru.
Satoru is a really jealous man. He doesn’t allow many people to become close to Megumi. He usually eliminates them if they’re deemed dangerous enough by Satoru. Satoru is also not afraid to mentally torture and abuse Megumi by spreading hurtful rumors and lies about him, isolating him and preventing him from making any friends except for Yuuji and Nobara, who posed no threat to Satoru until a few weeks ago. Also, make him physically and emotionally dependent on him.
“How unfortunate for them.”
“Yeah, it’s a shame since I quite like them. Maybe if they’re not stubborn enough, I could consider letting them study at Tokyo University with Megumi-speaking of Tokyo University, how’s the preparation?”
Satoru asks
“It goes smoothly. But do we still need to do this since Megumi currently doesn’t have the desire to continue his education?”
“Suguru, you don’t know how stubborn Megumi is. Just prepare the things I told you. I will persuade him slowly to give up his dream. Ah, I can’t wait for the moment Megumi becomes my wife! I will make sure that he wouldn't ever think to leave our home and become the obedient wife that I always want to!”
Satoru excitedly exclaims. Before he could gush more about how adorable his Megumi is, a low-ranking clan member knocks on the door and bows toward him.
“Boss, my apologize for disturbing you but we finally managed to catch the rat.”
Satoru’s expression becomes cold, his playful aura vanishes
“Lead the way, I will deal with him by myself. Suguru, finish your job and report the result to me later.”
“Certainly, Satoru.”
Suguru stares the door for a little bit before continuing his work, selecting people and making scenario for Megumi’s university life.
Suguru had done this before. When Megumi entered elementary, junior and senior high school. Sometimes, he feels sorry for the boy because he has managed to become the obsession of Japan's most dangerous man and is living a life full of lies. Completely unaware of Satoru’s true nature and the reason behind his bad luck. And it will stay like this until the rest of his life because Satoru can’t afford Megumi to know this little secret and run away from him-if he can.
It will be a nightmare if Megumi knew the truth, Satoru wouldn't mind to do anything to keep him, alive or not.
“Well, it’s not my problem. I’m sure Satoru will take care of him.”
Suguru dismisses his useless thought and start working again.
