Chapter 1: Leaving For Camp

Chapter Text

Obi-Wan woke up five minutes before his alarm was set to go off. His backpack sat beside his bed along with a rolled up sleeping bag and his library bag. (Most of the books had been taken out and replaced with things that he would need at camp.)

Anakin was tossing in the top bunk. Obi-Wan sighed. It was like his brother could never get a break from the nightmares. Maybe it would get better when they were at camp, Obi-Wan thought hopefully. With all the exercise they would get during the day, it should be easy to sleep at night.

He heard Ashoka shuffling outside his door.

"You can come in." He called softly. A moment later Ahsoka had her face smushed into Obi-Wan's chest and her arms wrapped around his waist like she was pretending to be a boa-constrictor.

"I don't want you guys to leave." The eight year old said into his shirt.

"But if Anakin and I don't leave, how will you have your girl party with Barris, Aayla, and Numa?" Obi-Wan asked.

Ahsoka brightened at the mention of the sleepover that her friends were coming over for that evening.

"Sky-Guy isn't up yet?" She asked standing on tiptoes to get a better look at the top bunk. Obi-Wan smiled.

"Ahsoka, have you ever known Anakin to get up of his own accord before nine thirty?"

The girl giggled. Obi-Wan looked at his phone. He had dismissed the alarm when he woke up. It was time for Anakin to get up. They needed to leave in an hour and Obi-Wan wanted to take advantage of the private bathrooms while he could to take a shower.

"Anakin," Obi-Wan said, nudging his brother. "You need to get up now. We leave in an hour."

Anakin batted his hands away. "Wake me up in forty-five minutes than." He moaned.

Obi-Wan pinched the bridge of his nose. He was already getting a headache.

"Have you even packed yet?"

"Mostly." Anakin said, moving his arm to cover his eyes, blocking out the lights Ahsoka had turned on.

"Shoot!" He said, suddenly sitting up and looking way more awake. He swung himself off his bed and proceeded to dump mechanical pieces from his dresser into his backpack.

"What is that for?" Obi-Wan asked, eyes following a screw that missed the backpack and rolled under the bed.

"Well, I'm going to be board at camp, so I'm bringing something fun to do."

Obi-Wan just sighed and headed for the shower.

Qui-Gon sipped his tea and waited for his kids to come down. The shower started upstairs. That would be Obi-Wan. Ahsoka preferred baths and wouldn't take one in the morning. You had to threaten Anakin with loss of screen privileges to get him to take a shower.

Tahl was making french toast. It amazed him how she could still do all these things even though she was blind. He was incredibly grateful that they had already finished the adoption process for Ahsoka when it had happened.

Of course, that made him think of how he had basically left Obi-Wan in charge of the younger two in his worry over his wife after the accident. Now Ahsoka was shy with him and clingy to Obi-Wan. Anakin had become extremely emo, and Obi-Wan seemed to have forgotten how to be a kid.

"Why so quiet?" Tahl asked removing a piece of French toast from the pan.

Qui-Gon sighed. "I just hope Obi-Wan will be able to relax at camp. He needs a break from all the responsibility he takes on."

Tahl turned towards him. "You're feeling guilty." She stated. Qui-Gon winced. Tahl sighed. "It's in the past, Qui. All we can do is make sure it never happens again." After a moment she added "Camp is exactly what Obi-Wan needs."

Obi-Wan pulled his clean shirt on and checked his email. Mr. Yoda, the man who owned the small summer camp, had asked him to be a councilor. He had been under the impression that only seniors were councilors. However, he had excepted and Mr. Yoda said he would email him the list of the children he would be in charge of this morning. There it was.
Jasper (Jar-Jar) Binks _ age 15
Yan Dooku _ age 17
Boba Fett _ age 14
Cody Fett _ age 16
Rex Fett _ age 16
Grievous General _ age 16
Anakin Skywalker-Jinn_ age 14
Hondo Ohnaka _ age 17
Maul Opress _ age 17
Savage Opress _ age 15

Obi-Wan suppressed a groan. More than half of them were his age or older. Anakin could already be counted on to be a handful. They expected one sixteen year old to look out for all of them?

Oh well. Mr. Yoda wouldn't have put him in charge of he didn't think he could handle it. Maybe all the kids (except for Anakin) were just really easy going and none of the older ones wanted to have the responsibility that would come with the position.

Obi-Wan was used to watching out for others. Before the Jinns had adopted him, he had been placed in a group home. Unfortunately, the adults in charge had been dishonest and abusive. He, Cerasi and Neild had kept the younger ones safe. He winced as Cerasi's death came to mind.

Obi-Wan remembered seeing the hand swinging towards the girl's face as she sat in the window, frozen, nowhere to go. The smack of the drunk woman's hand on the to skinny face, being unable to shove the woman away, too slow to grab Cerasi as she toppled from the second story window, the sound of him screaming her name and the crack as she hit the ground replayed inside his head.

"Obi-Wan? Are you okay in there?" That was Qui-Gon's voice Obi-Wan realized. He than realized that his eyes were closed and he was on the floor of the bathroom, panting.

Get it together! He mentally scolded himself.

"Yes. I'll be out in a moment." He called to Qui-Gon, his voice coming out slightly hoarse.

Anakin threw the last of his stuff into the back of the truck. Ahsoka came out of the house with Obi-Wan's sleeping bag and bookbag.

"Snips!" He said in a mock offended voice, "You help Obi-Wan with his stuff but not me?" He put his hand over his heart. "I'm the coolest big brother ever and you choose Obi."

She snorted at him. "You might be the cool brother, but Obi's the daddy-brother."

Anakin paused at this. He had never known his own father. Qui-Gon had become his dad when Anakin was eleven.

"What makes him the daddy-brother?" He asked thoughtfully.

Ahsoka's brow furrowed. "I don't know." She tossed her head so that her blue braids hung over her shoulders. " These are heavy." She declared rather impatiently.

He took the bags and added them to the things already in the truck bed.

"Where's Obi-Wan?"

"Still in the bathroom last I knew."

Anakin frowned. Even Obi-Wan didn't usually take that long with hygiene and beauty stuff.

Obi-Wan, Mom and Dad came out of the house. Obi-Wan's hair was still wet from the shower. Anakin grinned. He had an idea of what might have taken Obi-Wan so long.

"Did the hair dryer break?" He asked.

Obi-Wan looked confused. He ran his hand through his hair and his eyes widened. "Um, no- I - uh, got distracted, checking emails."

It was weird hearing Obi-Wan stammer like that. Their dad seemed to think so too, if the skeptical look was anything to go by. Tahl simply folded the older boy into a hug.

"You nervous about camp?" She asked.

"A little, yes." Obi-Wan replied.

Anakin scoffed. "Sounds like more than a little."

Ahsoka elbowed him. "Obi's not scared." She stated confidently.

She latched onto Obi-Wan then and Anakin felt a spike of jealousy.

"I'll call you tomorrow." Obi-Wan promised the girl.

"Where's my hug?" Anakin asked and then told himself that he didn't care when Ahsoka only stuck her tongue out at him. After all, Tahl hugged him, and he claimed the front seat for the ride to camp.
