Work Text:
Matt: Hey, I’ll be out for most of the day, but I’ll make it up to you at the theatre!
Matt: Love you! See you at 7! 💞💗💜💖
Matt: 7 pm btw-
Matt: Wanted to clarify 💜
While not an unwelcome couple of texts to wake up to, it was still a bit unusual in Edd’s opinion. He didn’t remember talking to Matt about going to the theatre today. Maybe they had a one-off conversation mentioning it and Matt went and booked tickets to something. Or, more likely, Matt planned something for the group and forgot to mention it.
Deciding he should hurry and tell Tom and Tord about the unexpected trip tonight, Edd got out of bed, got changed, and made his way to the living room. There, he was greeted by Tord, who was watching something on his phone.
“Could you at least keep that stuff limited to your own room?”
“It’s a meme, not hentai.”
“Yeah…anyways, did Matt tell you about tonight?”
“Mhm, hope you two have fun.”
“Huh?” Edd was taken aback by that brief comment. Only he and Matt were going? “Wait, what do you mean by ‘you two’? You and Tom aren’t coming?”
Tord looked at him, cocking an eyebrow. “No, we aren’t.”
Before Edd could continue questioning, a smack against the wall was heard. He turned to find an already wasted Tom struggling to keep himself balanced as he clung to the wall for support. Edd rushed over to go help steady his friend.
“Looks like Lazarus has finally risen,” Tord commented, surprisingly getting up to go and help Tom as well. “I’ve got Jehovah’s Witness, don’t worry.”
“Are you sure?” Edd asked, not sure if he should be concerned or not.
“I don’t want my dear friend to be preoccupied with this drittsekk when he has much more important matters to attend to. I’ll take good care of him, I promise.” Tord didn’t wait for an objection before hoisting Tom over his shoulder and throwing him on the couch, earning a string of curses from the man.
“Riiiiight, if you say so,” Taking the opportunity, Edd started to make his way to the kitchen. It was too early for all this chaos, and he was hungry. “I’m gonna go make some breakfast now-”
“-That won’t be necessary. Matt already made you some-”
Edd stopped in his tracks. Okay, he knew Matt was nice and all, but he couldn’t have possibly been that nice to-
“-Aaaand he fuuuckin’ woke me up at bloody crack ‘o dawn for it!” Tom confirmed Tord’s statement. He also answered the question as to why he was already up and wasted at such an early hour.
“At least he made sure you got up at a time that isn’t past noon.”
“Screeew youuuu, asshole!”
Deciding he didn’t want to stay for the argument, Edd finally made his way to the kitchen. There, he was greeted with a plate of pancakes topped with berries, another smaller plate with bacon, and a can of cola. There was a small note attached to the cola with the message: ‘With love, Matt’ written on it.
The brown-haired man took a seat and began to dig into the nice breakfast. It was a little cold, but it had probably been out for a while, so that was forgiven. The thought was enough to make it taste great anyways, even with the background sounds of his two friends possibly trying to kill one another.
Once he had finished, he went back out to the living room, not at all surprised to see the couch cushions thrown about the room and his friends with bruises. Tom had seemingly passed out, either from the fight or the alcohol he consumed. Tord was assessing the damage that had been inflicted on him.
“Yep, you took great care of him,” Edd commented dryly, picking up one of the cushions and throwing it back on the couch.
“Not my fault he’s an angry drunk,” Tord replied. “ But that’s beside the point. I think we’re going to need some stuff from the shoppes. I’ll continue to care for this one if you don’t mind going out.” He began to scoop up the unconscious man.
“Isn’t Matt already out? Couldn’t you tell him to get that stuff?”
“He’s preoccupied with something else. I’ll text you a list once my hands are free.”
“Alright…” Edd didn’t have much time to argue before Tord made his way to Tom’s bedroom. Oh well, they did need some stuff anyway. Might as well knock that out while he waited for seven to come around the corner.
He got his wallet, shoes, and keys, and made his way outside.

“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the prince’s knight in shining armor~” The all too familiar, taunting voice of his neighbor rang through his ears.
“ Eduardo. ”
“So, Edd, which one of you two dorks takes it up the ass?” Eduardo leaned over the fence with a shit-eating grin on his face.
“What are you talking about, Eduardo?” Edd questioned, not at all sure what the Spaniard was trying to imply.
“He’s asking which one of you goes to Subway, and which one goes to Domino’s.” Mark chimed in, answering the question for Eduardo.
“Wait,” Jon interrupted, “What does food have to do with any of this? I thought we were talking about how Edd was Matt’s-”
He was promptly cut off by a smack and ‘Shut up!’ from Eduardo. Edd felt the urge to continue arguing, maybe pry further into what Eduardo was talking about. However, a buzz from his phone reminded him he had other things to do.
“Hey, where do you think you’re going, fruit pop?! I’m not done talking to you yet!”
His neighbor’s calls for his attention were ignored as Edd began to walk away from the situation. He pulled out his phone to read the texts he had gotten from Tord.
Tord: Tylenol, motor oil, nails, berries and bacon (Matthew used the rest on you), paper towels, biscuits (not the cheap kind please those suck), bread.
Tord: oh, and witness wants some ice cream. Get him the cheap orange cream shit lol.
Tord: oh and if you can find cloudberries get some for me plz. Thanks :)
Just as Edd turned his phone off, he got another set of messages.
Tord: 1 more thing I forgot to tell you before you leave. Stay away from the theatre area until 7.
Tord: Absolutely no reason that has anything to do with me.
Tord: Im being genuine with that. Matt is the one who asked me to tell you.
A very suspicious request, but the brown-haired man chose to oblige. Who knew what was going down over there, he certainly didn’t want to find out yet. There was already enough he had to deal with this morning. No need to add anything else to that.

Seven finally came around, and it was time for Edd and Matt’s movie night. Originally, Edd planned to wait a bit for Matt to show up at the house. However, Tom now sobered up, informed him Matt was going to meet him at the theatre, and rushed the brown-haired man out of the house. He made a quick comment about ‘using protection’ before slamming the door.
The sound alerted Eduardo, who was sipping a can of diet cola in the doorway. The Spaniard yelled something about Edd ‘being the bottom’, but Edd just ignored it and walked briskly past the houses towards the theatre.
Already a weird way to kick off the evening.
And it only got weirder as Edd arrived at the theatre.
He was amazed to see a purple and green colored carpet leading toward the entranceway. The queue lines were moved to border it and were decorated with roses. The sign that typically showed the movies that were playing read ‘Reserved for Matt and Edd’s date night.’ It was honestly a marvelous display.
Wait…’ Matt and Edd’s date night ?’
“Edd!” Matt ran up to Edd with a bouquet of flowers in his hand, the biggest smile on his face. He donned a black suit with a purple tie.
“Matt?! W-what is all this?!” Edd asked, completely astonished.
“I just really wanted to make tonight’s date special for the both of us!.” Matt handed the bouquet to the brown-haired man. “That’s why I was out all day, sorry about that.”
Edd looked at the flowers in his hands, and then back at Matt. He felt flattered, but it was so out of the blue. Was this what everyone was acting weird about? A surprise date the ginger man had planned?
“Do you not like them? I can always buy some more if you want a different kind.” Matt’s question brought Edd out of his thoughts.
“No, I do. They’re swell! I just…didn’t think you felt this way about me. I’m not sure how I feel about all this.” Edd did his best to be easy on the man, not wanting to come off as harsh and break his heart.
“Well, we are dating, so I thought it’d be a given that I love you.” Matt stretched his arms out, motioning toward the scenery before them. “But now you know I love you THIS MUCH!”
Wait, they’re dating ?
“...Matt, what are you talking about?”
The area fell silent aside from the ambiance of the city. Matt’s face shifted from confusion to hurt, back to confusion, and then realization.
“I-I…we…I thought…didn’t I?”
“D-did you forget to actually ask me out?”
Matt’s silence before sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck was enough of an answer.
“You really are something else, you know that?”
The brown-haired man walked up to his slightly taller, ginger friend. The latter tensed up slightly, most likely expecting rejection, maybe even a smack. Instead, he felt his tie get grabbed as he was pulled into a sudden kiss. It was a short one, but it returned all the confidence he had lost.
“So, that’s a yes to us dating, I assume?” Matt asked, a wide grin across his face.
“Yes, Matthew, it is a yes to us dating.” Edd lightly punched him in the arm “You’re lucky I already found you attractive.”
“I mean, of course, how could you not?” Matt replied all too smugly, causing Edd to roll his eyes. “...but it’s nice to hear you say it. Genuinely, I mean…”
The sweetness in that last statement was almost too much. Edd couldn’t help but give the ginger another kiss, this time on his cheek, causing them both to blush.
“Well, shall we partake in our wonderful date, my dear?” Edd locked his arm with Matt’s.
“Indubitably, my love,” Matt responded.
The two walked the carpet and entered the theatre, ready to have the best first date of their lives.
