Work Text:

Inuyasha knew he would love his child instantly. The moment Kagome told him, he couldn't imagine not having having her in his life. What surprised him was how much he didn't just love Moroha but enjoyed being with her. He genuinely liked hanging out with this little baby, who looked at him with wonder and with a smile that would always brighten his heart. Kagome came home from the village to find him flat on his back and holding her up to the sky. He would raise her up and down, inciting happy, amused laughs from both of them. Moroha released excited giggles every time he dropped her close to his face, her pudgy hands reaching out to grab his ears or hair, whichever was closest, before being hurled upwards again. "Having fun?" Kagome asked with a small giggle.

"Yeah, can't ya tell?" Inuyasha replied sarcastically without looking away from their daughter. He laid Moroha on her back, sandwiched securely in the crook of his arm and tucked against his side. She kicked and squirmed until Inuyasha reached his other arm over to let her chew on his finger. The two of them laid there contentedly, looking up at the clear blue sky. Kagome sat beside her husband and daughter, gently running her hand through Moroha's messy, black hair. Inuyasha let a snort. "Pretty rude to leave a guy out like that." Kagome smiled and reached to scratch behind one of his ears and had to stifle her laughter when he closed his eyes and leaned his head towards her hand, his ear also turned in that direction. She sighed and stood up.

"I'm going to start on dinner." She announced. Inuyasha carefully moved Moroha onto his chest before sitting up and going to join her inside.

"What are we having?"

"Miso, rice, mackerel and pickled radishes." Kagome answered as she began preparing the necessary items.

"Need any help?" She smiled and shook her head. Some would be surprised to know what a help he is around the house. Considering Inuyasha had to take of himself since an early age she wasn't surprised by it. Most husbands in the village, though they loved their families, considered cooking, cleaning and child care 'women's work'. It was one more reason she felt so lucky to have him.

"No, I'm good. Just keep watching Moroha while I work." He made a small nod before sitting at the chabudai table in the center of the room. He laid Moroha on her back and nestled the baby in his arms. "Oh! I checked on Rin today!" Inuyasha tweaked his ears curiously.

"Oh yeah? Think she'll give birth soon?"

"It could be any time now! Of course in this era it's harder to tell but we're all pretty sure it's twins. Sango said she was the same size while pregnant with Gyokuto and Kin'u."

"I still can't believe Sesshomaru! Torturing me my whole life then marrying and having kids with a human! That bast-"

"Inuyasha!" She reprimanded before he could finish.

"What?! She doesn't know what I'm saying!"

"Not now but if you say that stuff as she grows up, when she starts talking she'll repeat you!"

"Good! Then I'll make sure to call him a bastard so much she'll think that's his name! Uncle Bastard is what she'll call him!"

"Inuyashaaaa..." She growled. "You know what would happen if you weren't holding Moroha right?!" His body stiffened at the thought then looked at his daughter.

"Thanks for the save, kiddo." He whispered, letting her grab his finger. Soon she let out a large yawn and her eyes fluttered closed. After some time Kagome came over.

"Inuyasha, the food is rea-" She stopped when she saw him. Her husband held their sleeping baby in his arms, her little hand tightly coiled around his long finger, while he looked down at her with the most loving and peaceful expression on his face. Kagome got down on her knees in front of them. "Would you like me to bring you your food?" She whispered with hand gently petting the top of Moroha's head.

"Huh?" He looked up as if suddenly snapped out of a trance. "Oh, yeah sure. Thanks." He replied softly then slowly and carefully placed the baby in her small crib that sat nearby. Inuyasha still looked lost in thought when Kagome sat their meals on the table in front of him then touched his shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" Kagome asked with a soft smile. His face was sprinkled with a tinge of pink.

"Just that I still can't believe this is real sometimes. That I have a family and I'm so incredibly happy." He looked over at their sleeping daughter and gently brushed the back of his finger against her cheek. "How is someone as perfect as Moroha born from me, who was thrown away by everyone his whole life? What did I do to deserve this?" Kagome looked at him on the verge of tears and leaned into his chest.

"Oh Puppy! When will you learn that you deserve everything wonderful on this earth and it's the rest of the world that are wrong?" Maybe she was right. He must have done something to please the Kami to meet Kagome and be given a miracle like the baby in front of him. He sighed and hugged her back.

"Maybe one day. Now let's eat before our food gets cold." She nodded in agreement and they dug in happily.

______________

He was suddenly awoken by the cries of his infant daughter. Inuyasha sat up to see an obviously exhausted Kagome sitting with Moroha in her arms attempting to breast feed. "Did she wake you? I'm so sorry! She's being so fussy tonight for some reason. She's not hungry or in need of changing. I'm not sure what's wrong." She whispered over the babies soft cries.

"Probably cause of her impromptu nap earlier. Give her to me." He said. Kagome carefully transferred Moroha into his outstretched, waiting arms. "Let's let momma get some sleep." He said, addressing the upset Moroha then stood and walked out the door. He sat on the small, sloping hill in front of the house and looked up. "You know... I used not care about the stars until your mom came along. See, in her world there were lights everywhere, so much that you couldn't really see them at all. She used to talk about how it was like the earth was covered in a blanket of them when she came through the well." Moroha gurgled and reached her hand towards him, grabbing ahold of his finger to gum on it.

"Yeah I know, sappy stuff right?" He sighed dramatically. "But that's your mother so better get used to it now, trust me." He continued. "Where was I before I was interrupted? Oh yeah, the stars. I remember the first time I saw the night sky in her world then looked up at them here, I mean really looked. I realized she was right. They were beautiful but..." He smiled fondly at the memory. "What I remember most of all were her eyes in that moment and I thought, 'Stars? How can I possibly care about stars right now?'" Moroha whined and squirmed in his arms. "What do ya mean I'm sappy too? I'm just trying to entertain you and that's how you talk to me?" She babbled and flailed her her hands. "You inherited your mothers attitude I see. Don't tell her I said that though."

"Too late!" He heard from inside the house, causing him to jump a little. He turned to see his wife appearing from the house with her arms crossed and a stern look aimed towards him.

"W-what I meant was that she got your, uhhh, kind and forgiving nature!" She stared at him for a few seconds before finally breaking down from laughter. He twitched his ears in irritation.

"You think you're hilarious, don't you?" He mumbled while she sat down.

"No. I know I am." Kagome replied with a smug smile.

"You're supposed to be asleep!" He exclaimed. She held out her arms and he relinquished Moroha to her.

"My milk was coming out so I figured I'd try feeding again. You did pretty well with calming her down. I'm impressed!" Kagome loosened her sleeping yukata and helped the baby latch onto her breast. "There we go! That's much better isn't it?" She said sweetly then looked upwards. "Wow! Look at the stars! So pretty!" She in queit wonder. Inuyasha felt himself smile as her eyes reflected the glittering specks. He moved closer and put his arms around her and Moroha then pressed his lips against her temple.

"Absolutely beautiful." He whispered, leaning his against her and rubbing his face into her hair. A hand gently rubbed the top of their small daughters head while she drank from her mother. Kagome smiled warmly and leaned into his embrace.
