[Re-writing] If We Were Destined

Summary:

Beomgyu could not believe that the poisonous blade of the ruthless king of Frostine would end his life. At that moment, he wished he could turn back time to change his fate; hoping for 'someone' to hear him plead. But as soon as the darkness consumed him, Beomgyu was sure that was his last and there could never be a second chance... only that... he woke up a decade before the great cleansing took place.

And when he thought his second chance was running smoothly, he was wrong about it. After discovering that Fate has changed his 'story', Beomgyu was suddenly involved in an arranged marriage with that person who had unalive him (much to his dismay).

Hoping this would change the tragic destiny and save innocent lives, Beomgyu was determined to get revenge. But, when an unforeseen chapter of his new life unfolded, Beomgyu did not expect Love to be one of them. And much to his surprise, that love had always existed even before all of this chaos happened.

Could it be one of the reasons why he was resurrected?

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

They said … the moment death takes hold of our fragile lives, the brain replays all the happy moments we’ve ever known… but I’d rather say it’s a cruel mercy… a way to divert us from the cold, relentless fear it brings.

I never believed it.

Because I’ve never had those moments to cling to. At least none were worth calling memories.

Or perhaps… maybe there is one.

But that was before everythingㅡ before the chaos, the betrayal, the war. It was a fleeting chapter, lost in the storms, and now it was buried by the weight of everything that came after.

🗡️

The time stopped the moment the poisonous blade of his enemy struck just beneath his ribs. In an instant, the chaotic noise in his surroundings shut, for all his senses could focus on now was the throbbing pain that the sword had put on him.

It came too suddenly. One moment, he was standing, and the next, all he could feel was the immense burning pain, unable to comprehend the depth of his torment. But the realization that came after was worse than everything. Beomgyu wondered how frail his body was that the blade pierced him so effortlessly like it had sliced through paper instead of flesh.

When his opponent yanked the sword brutally from him, it sent a wave of sharp pain through Beomgyu. His breath hitched as he staggered backwards. He felt the world spinning. Each breath was ragged and painful. His armour, once a shield, was now stained with blood, and as it dripped onto the snowy ground, it created irregular crimson dotsㅡlike a chaotic splash on a blank canvas.

Clutching his chest with a trembling hand, he could feel the poison insidiously spread through his bloodstream, and the icy sensation creeping all over his body that he felt his hands and legs getting numb. Immediately, the sword that he yielded to protect himself a while ago slipped from his weakening grip. A dull thud echoed as the blade fell onto the white velvety ground, and his knees also gave out.

Was he going to die now?

“How does it feel to be on the verge of death?” The amount of satisfaction in the other person's tone as he watched Beomgyu fall over on the icy ground was palpable, yet insatiable. It’s as though the wound he had inflicted wasn’t enough to fulfil his thirst for vengeance. “I did a great job, didn't I?” he snickered, his voice filled with malice.

Beomgyu coughed blood; the poison had seeped deeper into his veins, draining away what little strength he had left. His breath grew so uneven and shallow, that not even his healing ability could be of use at the moment, as if it was silenced completely by this deadly poison. “P-please —” he choked, his voice was barely audible.

Death was definitely coming for him, and for once, he understood how precious his healing power could be in a crucial situation like this. He had always seen it as a curse, a lesser gift compared to his brothers and sister. But right now, when the torturous pain of finality conquered his mortality, Beomgyu longed for it.

He never thought dying could be this painful.

A deep booming voice erupted in an ominous laughter. “Look at you! The fourth prince of Lenus, now begging for his life!” Each word felt like a dagger to Beomgyu. “Well, isn’t this how it should end? As a king consort, shouldn’t you bear the sins of your husband? After all, the role is very fitting.”

The man crouched in front of him, his movement leisure like a vicious predator. Any man who held his gaze could compare its coldness to ice, somewhat a terrifying glare that could make his rival fall to their knees in fear, even the powerful ruler of other great kingdoms.

He clicked his tongue. A smirk adorned his lips. “Do you have any idea how evil your husband truly is?” His hands caressed the side of Beomgyu’s pale cheek with a gentle mockery. His touch was a harsh contrast to the venom in his words. “And yet here you are… fighting on behalf of him, and die at the hand of mine? How heroic.”

Truthfully, Beomgyu had never known what his husband had been doing behind his back. The man that he knew was always nice and generous, a great ruler of the Vulcan Kingdomㅡat least that’s what he’d let Beomgyu view him before and after their arranged marriageㅡuntil he heard the news of Frostine’s army approaching their border.

He had not foreseen a war to break.

But when he learned that his husband had fled the cityㅡleaving him in the palace to fend for himself and the innocent people of Vulcan against the wrath of the invading armiesㅡBeomgyu’s heart shattered by the weight of disappointment and betrayal. How could the man who had sworn to protect him with his very life abandon him to bear the consequences of his wrongdoing?

“Tsk. Of course, you wouldn’t know. You never care any of that.” The other male stood, gripping his sword tightly as he heaved a heavy sigh. “It’s such a pity to waste a face like yours… if only you’d chosen me over him…” he muttered, a hint of bitterness in his words was obvious like a deadly venom.

Beomgyu had always been a man of will. But right now… all he could feel was hopelessness. With everything happening in his surroundings, he's sure there's no help coming for him. No one would hear him plead. And he hated that his life would end here, lying pathetically on the freezing white ground with his blood pooling around.

“If we were destined in another lifetime... I hope we don't cross paths like this, Choi Beomgyu.”

Beomgyu choked on his breath. His eyes were full of despair, and they never left the man's face. How unbelievable everything seemed to be. He never expected that the face of someone he used to treasure the most was the last face he would see in his last moment. The fact that he had once found mesmerizingㅡ those eyes, nose and lipsㅡwere now nothing but a painful memory of a lifetime he was about to leave behind.

“K-Kai…” he called, forcing out all the energy left in him to speak the name that had once meant everything to him. He coughed, and more blood spilt out of his mouth. “P-please…”

The numbness eventually made his blurry sight darken. And with the last breath heaved through his mouth, Beomgyu surrendered to the dark void.

It's unfair. I shouldn't die now

Please...

At least not now...

Chapter Text

"YOUR Highness..."

Beomgyu could hear familiar voices calling for him from the empty darkness. He looked everywhere around him, but couldn't find anyone.

Where was he? Was this a dreamland? But how could he not see anything in front of him? Were his eyes turning blind or something?

"Your Highness, are you alright?"

Beomgyu turned his back around, but still could not figure out his surrounding, and he did not sure if he was standing on the ground or if he was floating. He just ... couldn't feel anything to touch.

"Your Highness, please wake up!"

Beomgyu heard the voice again, but where could he find those people?

"Your Highnessㅡ"

"Confused, aren't you?"

The sudden greeting made Beomgyu spin around in utter surprise.

"W-who are you?" he asked, eyes studying the figure in front of him warily.

It was a woman. Dressed in a long red flowy robe with a matching scarlet garment underneath and a thin golden headpiece that resembled a sun on top of her waist-length raven hair. She was breathtakingly beautiful ㅡa very fair one that Beomgyu could not describe in words. And there was something about her that gave him divine energy.

But ... it's strange. How could it be only the two of them in here? What kind of place was this?

"Do not be afraid, my child. I won't harm you." The woman smiled assuringly before she reached her hand out to the latter. "I am Fate."

"Fate?"

Now, this was definitely the weirdest dream he had. Beomgyu hesitantly hold the woman's hand and realized it was not imagination.

He could feel her.

"You are not dreaming." Fate said. She held Beomgyu's hands in full tenderness while caressing his cheek. "I am real. And everything that just happened was real too."

Beomgyu was left speechless. "So t-that's mean ... I am dead?"

Fate chuckled, which made Beomgyu question the meaning behind that.

"You are. At least for now." She let go of Beomgyu's cheek and looked to her right, before flashing a scene that was so familiar to the confused male with a swift move of her hand.

It was the moment when he was stabbed and heaved his final breath. A very aching sight to see.

"I ... I don't understand," Beomgyu said. His eyes trailed down to every move Fate made. He wondered how she showed him those with just her hand. And Beomgyu noticed she had not let go of his hand, yet. "If that was me and it's real, then ... is this the afterlife?"

He could not believe how absurd he sound right now.

"No.... this is not the afterlife, sweet boy," Fate paused, before turning her face at him. "I am not Death nor do I handle any dead soul. I... exist to write the fate and destiny of every living being. I, too, bring opportunities and free will. I am the creator of your life."

"So, that's how you write mine? My ending?" Beomgyu raised a brow. "Dead by the hand of that person for something that I never commit?" There's a hint of frustration in his voice. He felt unfair with his own fate.

"Well ... everyone has their own ending. At some point, they will face death too. Always. But, you, my child, the fate that I wrote for you was heartbreaking enough that your plead touched me. I can hear your painful cry; begging for another chance to live."

The painful memory washed over his mind. From the moment he existed, til' his final breath. Beomgyu knew it was ridiculous, but he really hoped to rewrite his story again.

"I really meant what I wished," he mumbled.

"I know." Fate grinned. "And that is why I am stealing you from Death."

She started to walk, leading Beomgyu by their connected hand to nowhere but endless darkness.

Beomgyu could not help but stare at Fate in disbelief. He still not believing any of this. But, how could she talk about fate, life and death like nothing?

"Should I feel better about that?"

Fate turned to him. "I am giving you another opportunity, Beomgyu."

Opportunity? What kind?

As if reading what's clouding inside of Beomgyu's head, Fate immediately let go of his hand. "Rewrite your fate and destiny."

Without letting Beomgyu ask any more questions, Fate pushed him hard by his shoulder and Beomgyu tumbled down the black empty hole.

"Waitㅡ"

The last thing he knew was ... he was gasping for air like he was running out of it; like a fish out of water. That's when he noticed his body was drenched, and it made him shiver when he was exposed to the gushing wind and the cold ground under him.

Beomgyu coughed; confused as he tried to comprehend the situation. Just now he was in that dark place with a woman or Fate as she called herself. And now he was back in ... Lenus?

But how could that be possible?

He was sure he had not been in his birthplace for a decade already. Also, the last place he remembered before everything went dark was not even Lenus.

"Where am I?" He mumbled weakly.

His blurry vision slowly brightened up with the light in his surroundings and it was getting sharper and more focused when the three figures in front of him were getting clearer. It was then he saw the familiar faces staring down at him worriedly.

"Goodness, you're back!" A man with doe-like eyes heaved a sigh of relief as he let himself fall on the ground next to the lying prince. His hands glowed faded blue light that slowly vanished as he calmed himself down.

"I told you it works, Heeseung!" The other male glared and softened his gaze when he looked down on Beomgyu.

"Are you alright, Your Highness?" said a young woman, who was sitting on his right, worriedly.

Beomgyu didn't know how to process the reaction but gave a bewildered look at them. This was definitely a dream. Because he was dead. And as far as he knew, these three persons also had the same fate as him. So how could this happen?

What is happening? Where am I?

"Ack!" The jabbing pain in his chest throbbed like hell; punching his gut mercilessly. Beomgyu's breath was heavy suddenly.

How can a dream feel this painful?

And why was this scene looked repeated?

It felt as if he was sent back in time.

"Your Highness, we thought that we were losing you!" The young woman spoke again, carefully brushing the prince's lock aside, avoiding the open cut on his forehead. Relief washed over her beautiful feature as she watched the prince respond to their call.

"Yunjin, that's very rude of you. How can you say that to our prince?" Jay retorted.

Rolling her eyes in annoyance, Yunjin replied, "His Highness just fell from his horse and bleeding! Am I wrong for saying that, Jay? If it's not for His Highness's ability to heal himself, we're all going to be beheaded by the king!"

"Alright, now, you two. Stop quarrelling in front of His Highnessㅡ"

"Heeseung, you see it too, didn't you?" Yunjin added.

The prince's advisor heaved a heavy sigh as if expecting what would unfold later. "Yes, I did. But right now ... we need to bring His Highness back to his chamber," Heeseung carefully spoke, trying his best not to provoke both of them any longer.

Jay quickly moved his sword to his back and gently hold the prince's shoulder; pulling him to a sitting position whilst giving him support on his back with his free hand. "Careful, Your Highness."

"My head," Beomgyu winced. He felt it spinning as if the earth was shaking hard.

"Don't worry! We will get you treated by the royal physician as soon as possible," said Yunjin, as she signalled the two men with a firm nod.

"Heeseung, get him on my back," Jay commanded, as he already lowered his body for the prince to get on. "Hold on to me, Your Highness. I'll get you there as fast as I can."

Heeseung instantly helped Beomgyu get on Jay's back. And when he made sure everything was good, he turned to the worried court lady.

"Yunjin, make sure His Highness gets in his chamber safely and avoids every eye that can see him." He then handed a piece of sapphire bead to Yunjin that he had taken out of a small pouch from his cape. "You know how it works, right?"

"Yes!"

Jay raised a brow. "And what about you?"

"I'll find Lord Kim, of course."

"But is he not in Lenus, Heeseung?" Yunjin stared at the tall male in doubt. "How are you going to find him?"

Heeseung didn't show any sign of surprise or trouble upon hearing that. He, too, knew about that.

"He will be here to treat our prince. I'll find a way," he said, eyes immediately looking at the pocket watch hanging from his vest.

"Don't make us wait," Jay said his final word, before vanishing from sight with Yunjin and Beomgyu with the help of the sapphire bead.

Chapter Text

WHEN Heeseung said he would think of a way to bring back his prince's physician to Lenus, he really meant it. Because now ... they were all waiting and looked at Lord Kim treating the unconscious prince anticipatingly.

Every single move made by the physician was followed by their anxious eyes; afraid that any mistake could worsen the prince's condition.

The physician gently felt the pulse on Beomgyu's wrist before he placed the hand back under the warm blanket with a pleased sigh as he turned to the three worried faces.

"How's his condition?" Jay spoke, breaking the silence in the chamber. He was standing just behind the older male.

Lord Kim smiled assuringly. "His Highness is doing alright. Luckily the cut on his forehead isn't serious. I already clean it, but he will heal himself eventually."

Right. Beomgyu is a healer. A cut like that won't leave anything bad on him for a long period.

"He needs a good rest. Precisely, enough sleep."

Heeseung nodded understandingly. Beomgyu had trouble with his sleep these days, and it concerned them so much. Now that Lord Kim had brought the issue, he thought it was important to take note.

"I won't prescribe any potion for now. But, some herbal tea works the best." Lord Kim looked at Yunjin. "My assistant will send the prescribed tea leaves for His Highness. Make sure he drinks it before going to bed."

"Yes, I will make sure of that, Sir." Yunjin nodded.

"Though I wonder how bad his fall was.... for now, I think it would be best if we let him rest," Lord Kim added. "I will come again to follow up on his condition, alright?"

The physician then fished his pocket watch out. "Well then, I think I'll take my leave now."

"Sure," both Jay and Heeseung replied in unison.

Lord Kim looked at each of the three young fellows with his warm and assuring gaze. "Don't worry too much. His Highness will be fine. He is strong enough to heal himself."

Heeseung flashed a little smile at the words. "Have a safe ride home, Sir."

The older male nodded to them and took his leave with Yunjin's assistance.

Now the swordsman and the prince's advisor were left in the chamber as silence took over the surrounding. Jay and Heeseung exchanged looks, before setting their gaze on Beomgyu. The two of them were still standing beside the huge mahogany four-poster bed.

"Something isn't right, don't you think?" Jay started, as he folded his arms in front of his torso.

Heeseung hummed in agreement. He'd been thinking about this since before. "But I can't figure out the answer."

"Let's get this straight," Jay paused, turning his attention to the advisor. "His Highness and Haru have a perfect bond. You knew that too. Isn't it weird to find him losing control over her?"

True. Beomgyu and his horse, Haru, had the greatest bond anyone could ever imagine. He'd been riding her since day one, and as far as everyone knew, Haru could never act recklessly just to hurt him. She loved her owner, and the same goes for Beomgyu.

"Maybe something happened and we didn't notice?" Heeseung raised a brow.

"It's impossible. I was just behind him and he was perfectly fine when we left the palace," Jay replied certainly.  "If anything weird happens, I would be the first person to notice."

They were supposed to head out to the prince's favourite resting place, which was the blue lake near the palace ground. As usual, Beomgyu would ride Haru and go there with his two trusted men and his court lady. It was rather ordinary. They would take their usual route with ease and arrive there safely.

But, what had happened earlier was unpredicted.

Beomgyu suddenly lose his control over Haru, and the female horse instantly ran down the hill. Lucky Jay was close enough to stop everything, which resulting the prince falling off his horse, and tumbling down the steep hill.

"Also, I've seen him fall, getting cut and bleeding more than once. Throughout all that, I haven't seen him this ... weak. Honestly, have you heard of or seen him like this before?"

"No," Heeseung firmly replied. "Even if he's in pain, he never shows that. Besides, His Highness is a healer just like the late Queen Consort. He is immune to all sorts of pain existed."

"He kept mumbling about someone stabbing his chest," Jay said, with a heavy sigh. "Do you think it's a nightmare?"

Jay wondered how badly a nightmare could affect someone. Because, just now, Lord Kim had examined the front torso of Beomgyu and strangely ... there was nothing on it. No wound or any fresh cut on his skin. That was what made them dumbfounded. The injury was on Beomgyu's forehead, but how could the pain be on his chest?

Heeseung nodded silently. "Let's just hope the tea works for him."

"Rightㅡ"

The rustled fabric grabbed the attention of the two men instantly. Beomgyu stirred from his unconsciousness as he moved under the thick blanket.

"Your Highness!" Jay and Heeseung inched closer to the bed with no hesitation.

Beomgyu slowly adjusted his eyes as he opened them. The scene unfolded in front of him was indeed familiar. The first thing that greeted him was the creamy and light greyish-blue tone of the room. Somehow it gave him warmth and comfort. And if his brain wasn't playing any trick, this place was definitely his bedroom.

"Ugh," Beomgyu winced groggily as he shifted to his right. The pain was still there, but he was feeling a lot better than earlier.

It was then he noticed the two males standing beside his bed.

"H-Heeseung? Jay?" He called weakly. The tone of his voice showed perplexity.

"Yes, Your Highness." The two answered. "We are here."

Beomgyu still could not grasp fully the situation. "But how? A-aren't you guys supposed to be," he trailed off, leaving his sentence hanging to find the right word.

"We are supposed to be what?" Jay questioned with puzzlement.

Dead.

Was that the right word to say? But, would that make any sense to both of them? Won't they feel weirded out if he said that?

"N-nothing." He then turned to his left, staring at his surroundings with so many questions in mind. "I forgot what I want to say."

Maybe he should leave that part to himself.

The lights coming through the windows' room have gone into an orange-purplish hue. Probably the sun had set down for the day, which meant it was already in the eveningㅡ in contrast to the light he'd seen when he opened his eyes earlier.  Had he slept that long for the day to switch to night?

Turning his attention back to the two males, Beomgyu asked, "What year are we in now?"

The swordsman was flabbergasted by the abrupt question. He raised a brow at Heeseung, waiting for any sign of affirmation. "Umm, it's the year 1815, Your Highness."

"1815...." Beomgyu mumbled before a sudden realization hit him. "Wait, 1815?" he questioned, voice full of uncertainty. "Are you sure it's 1815?"

"Yes."

That firm answer made Beomgyu rose from his rest instantly.

"1815?!" He repeated. This time, all the pain he felt was completely ignored, eyes completely wide.

"Y-yes, Your Highness." Jay was too stunned by the reaction.

"Are you sure it's not the year 1825?"

Jay and Heeseung nodded. "Yes."

"We are sure of that," Heeseung continued.

If that's true, does it mean he was back a decade before his death? Soㅡ

"I'm ... not dead?"

The swordsman and the advisor could only stare at the prince in disbelief.

"No, Your Highness. You are alive and fine," said Jay calmly, tried not to show his shocked expression. "Maybe just hurt a bit on your," he paused, motioning his hand to his forehead. "Forehead," he continued.

"And you two are alive? Y-you guys real? Not like a ghost or anything?" Beomgyu asked frantically.

"Yes, we are still alive and breathing, Your Highness," Jay said with an assuring nod.

"S-so ... we are really in the year 1815." Beomgyu finally got the confirmation he needed.

If it was true that he was in the year 1815, that means his eldest brother, Minho, had just been coronated as the new king of Lenus. Also, it's the year when his third brother, Prince Yeonjun, married his fiance.

"That means  Minho hyung must have been coronated this year. And Yeonjun hyung's wedding going to be held soon," he mumbled with a little smile.

Both Jay and Heeseung looked at each other with great surprise, as if Beomgyu just spurted nonsense. Jay immediately signalled the latter to explain to the prince this time with his eyes.

"Your Highness, pardon my interruption. But ... the Crown PrinceㅡI mean, His Majesty, King Minho's coronation already happened five years ago."

"What?" Beomgyu frowned.

"His Majesty King Minsu has fallen ill for the past five years, and your brother was coronated as the new king right away to ascend the throne. As for Prince Yeonjun he," Heeseung paused. Eyes staring at the sudden change on Beomgyu's face with an unreadable expression. "He hasn't returned to Lenus for over a decade."

What did he just hear?

Minho ascended the throne earlier than he was supposed to because of his father's illness.

That's impossible!

"My f-father gotten ill?"

Heeseung nodded. "Yes, Your Highness. Don't you remember any of that?"

"But he was perfectly fine!" Beomgyu exclaimed. The last time he was alive, his father's health was good. To hear this kind of news was quite shocking to him.

"King Minsu has been bedridden ever since Prince Yeonjun's letter came. His health worsened each day that he couldn't fulfil his duty and responsibility as a ruler," Heeseung explained.

What's with Yeonjun not returning to Lenus? Beomgyu swore with his own life that Yeonjun could never pull such an act. He was the most responsible and kind person Beomgyu ever knew in his entire life. So knowing that he was the reason behind their father's health condition was beyond belief.

"What letter?"

"It's a letter that he sent to break off his engagement with the first Young Master Kang," Jay uttered solemnly.

He could still remember that very day when the letter came to the palace. The previous king fell into great shock upon reading the letter's content that he lose consciousness for days. The news does not only shaken up the whole kingdom but tarnished the royal family members' image too. It was a very painful and upsetting event. After all the hopes given to him by King Minsu ... Yeonjun returned them with disappointment.

Jay knew he didn't have any right to be mad. But when he looked at Beomgyu's gloomy face that day, he thought Yeonjun's irresponsible act was extremely unacceptable as a royal family member. He could have made a way better decision than that. Now, it seemed like he was running away from his problem and dumping everything for other people to bear.

"H-he broke off the engagement?" Beomgyu did not know how he was supposed to take this new information. As far as he knew about the Yeonjun in his previous life, he was not the type to abandon his problem. And he loved his fiance so much that he'd rather die for him.  "And how is Minister Kang taking this matter? What about Yeosang hyung?"

"It was unimaginable. Nobody ever expects this sudden turn." Heeseung sighed, before exchanging another look with Jay.  "Young Master Yeosang became the talk of the kingdom. Some even spread false rumours about him with this news."

What is happening? Beomgyu pondered hard.

Was this really the second chance he got from Fate?

"Your Highness, are you alright?" Jay knew the expression on Beomgyu's face did not bring any good outcome. He was worried it might affect his recovery from earlier. "I think it would be best if we continue this another time. What matters now is your condition."

If it was true ... he regretted it.

Beomgyu thought he should have remained dead just like he was fated to. It's better to be dead than to have someone dear to him hurt.

Also, he felt the whole 'story' has been changed.

But, for what reason?

The soft knock from the door and Yunjin's voice put their conversation to an end.

"Yes, Yunjin. Come on in," Jay answered.

The door was instantly opened by the court lady as another male tailed behind her.

"Kang Taehyun?" The other male presence astounded Beomgyu to the point he lost all the words in his mind. "Whatㅡhowㅡw-what are you doing here?"

The last person he wished not to see today was his best friend, Taehyun. Or should he say, ex-friend?

After what happened in his previous life, Beomgyu could not get rid of all the bad memories in his head. Every single person has their own final impression of his past. Now it's all mixed up with the current scenario that it was hard for Beomgyu to distinguish from. And what if everyone has their own agenda that he did not know about? A good character could be bad, and a bad character could be good. He just did not know what to do.

"What do you mean by that question?" Taehyun exhaled exasperatedly. "Do you not expect me to be here after knowing what happened to my best friend?" There was no expression on his face, but his eyes never failed to show his worriedness. He sat on the side of the bed and took Beomgyu's hand gently. "I'm so worried about you! Do you know that?"

Beomgyu did not respond to it, instead, he stared at the younger male carefully.

Was this an act?

He knew the old Taehyun could never treat him this way anymore. That was why he was wary of the younger's movement.

Taehyun turned to the advisor. "What did Lord Kim say about him?"

"His Highness was fine. Nothing serious should be concerned about." Heeseung flashed an assuring smile. He wondered if he should tell the young master about their conversation just now. But, looking at the genuine distress on Taehyun's face, he thought it would be best if he didn't mention it. For now, he and Jay will think of the answer.

"That's a relief." Taehyun tucked the loose strand of Beomgyu's hair behind his ear carefully and tried not to touch the treated injury on the latter's forehead.

"Taehyun...." Beomgyu trailed off. His eyes never leave the younger's face. "Are you not mad at me?"

The young master's eyes widened. "W-what do you mean? Why would I be mad at you? Being mad at you has never crossed my mind!"

Beomgyu did not know what's gotten into him, but his eye was teary when he heard the younger's answer. "After what my brother did to your familyㅡ" and he broke into an unstoppable sob.

"Beomgyu... why are you crying?" Taehyun pulled the sobbing prince into his embrace.

"Iㅡ I am ashamed of myselfㅡ y-you should be mad at me! I deserve it!"

"It's not even your fault, shhh.... that's alright."

"You should have not befriended meㅡ you already left me before. B-but now," he sobbed. "Now that you're being nice again... I missed that!"

Being nice again? Taehyun frowned. "Beomgyu, I would never leave you."

The other three persons in the room could only witness the scene unfold in front of them dumbfoundedly. Honestly, their prince had been acting strange since that fall. Could there be something happening?

A curse? Or any bad intentions from someone?

Well, anything was possible.

Chapter 4: Three

Notes:

Hi, before we go any further I would like to clarify that the historical setting may be not accurate according to the facts that we have known about in real life. 1815 here might not be similar to the one from our world. Again, this story has a "fantasy-historical" element in it that is made up and far from reality (hence why it's called fiction).

I don't know why I need to clarify this but just in case any historical geek went after my throat for the inaccurate fact - if they ever stumble upon this story.

Also, I am sorry if there is a delay in the new update because I normally type with my laptop, but an unfortunate event (not as dramatic as it sounds) has caused my progress to slow down a bit.

So, that's that.

I hope you enjoy this slow-burn fic in contentment and just know that your comment and kudos really made my day.

Enjoy~ ^^

Chapter Text

IT had been three days since Beomgyu woke up in this life. Though it's hard to believe that he was resurrected from death, Beomgyu had no choice but to make this opportunity not go to waste.

He didn't want to die for the second time with deep regret and unpreparedness just like last time.

But when he thought his new life would be great and easy, he was wrong. Because now ... there were a lot of details that he discovered in the past few days and he wasn't sure how to process it.

He wished Fate could at least explain to him about this new life. Because Beomgyu had never been this clueless. He's afraid that his three subordinates would have noticed his strange behaviour. And by now... he's sure Heeseung probably had started finding the answer to that.

Well, talking about that, he noticed the current Heeseung and the past Heeseung weren't that any different. The same goes for Yunjin and Jay too. Nothing odd about them, at least for now, he could assume that. After all, it's only been three days. Who knew if something would change along the way, right?

Also, Beomgyu wondered how much of a change Fate had done in this life. Because some familiar people had been showing too much weirdness that he never expected.

First, his brother, Yeonjun.

He still could not grasp why he suddenly became the "runaway" prince from those romance tales he used to read. Yeonjun's disappearance for a decade had left a huge question mark in his mind. There was no way his brother would abandon his family, and his birthplace, and even gave up his royal title because of a petty reason: arranged marriage.

If it's true, then why he had to do it this way? He knew Yeonjun could have choose a smarter decision. It's still a question to him what made Yeonjun so sure that a letter could solve everything that simple.

Then, The Second Young Master Kang: Taehyun.

Beomgyu was still doubting his kindness towards him. He did not want to trust the latter fully because he was afraid that once he started to believe him, all of that would be gone instantly.

Yes, Beomgyu hated losing someone he treasured and he was scared of being betrayed for the second time. And there was no way Beomgyu could afford another hurting in this life. The previous pain had left a deep wound in him, and it was too painful to bear.

But again, even after what had happened between his family and Kang's family, it was still a surprise to him that Taehyun did not despise him (yet) at all.

The younger treated him so nice and gently that Beomgyu almost forgot that the previous Taehyun could never do something like this to him; the latter could not even look him in the eye or stand within any proximity.

Somehow it made him confused.

But, even if the current Taehyun was nice, so what? Like... what if this Taehyun also had a personal agenda against him like the previous one? Shouldn't he be careful of that?

And the worse part was when his father's concubine, Lady Kim, (suddenly) act all nice to him when she visited his chamber yesterday.

It was so strange because Beomgyu had never seen her like that before, and he was so sure that she hated him to his bone!

So when he witnessed the deadly concern plastered on her face, it just didn't sit right with him. The new her was the epitome of the warm motherly figure that Beomgyu ever wanted! It was beyond bizarre to say.

And when Beomgyu recalled back his interaction with her... he was certain she was the one suggesting his marriage with the Crown Prince of Vulcan. Even putting a good word on his behalf as she knew him better than anyone else in Lenus!

That was suspicious enough for him to reject the proposal, but if only he wasn't that naive to see the truth behind all that facade she'd been displaying... Beomgyu was sure he wouldn't have died at the hand of the icy king. And he's sure his life could have been turned the other way around.

Maybe a lot better than any of this!

What's shocking to him was that he heard from Yunjin that Lady Kim was the one that coaxed his father to send Yeonjun away to study abroad; saying it was for the better, for a proper self-development... when Yeonjun didn't necessarily have to go through any of that.

Yes, he admitted that Yeonjun may lack in some ways, but all of this made it look like she was scheming something that nobody knows.

Though Beomgyu may not know how far he could believe this information, he somehow felt unsettled with what was happening in the palace currently.

Everything seemed odd.

Wicked, to be exact.

"Your Highness," Yunjin called, immediately pulling the prince away from his train of thought.

Oh dear, how long had he been spacing out?

"Yes?" Beomgyu flashed a little smile, averting his gaze from his breakfast to the court lady.

"You've been staring at your meal since you sat here," Yunjin said as she pointed out at the untouched food. She was standing on Beomgyu's right, checking on the prince's expression carefully. "Is there something bothering your mind?"

Beomgyu's eyes immediately set on the bowl in front and Yunjin was right about it. He had not touched his breakfast, yet, and he's sure at this rate the food had gone cold.

It's not like the meal served wasn't appealing to him. It's just... he seriously didn't have the appetite to eat them, which of course, he couldn't say to Yunjin out loud because the court lady was very particular about his well-being.

And ever since his unfortunate accident three days ago, she's been acting extra wary of him.

Don't get him wrong.

It's not like Beomgyu didn't appreciate the effort and attention he received, it's just that he felt unnecessary.

Jay and Heeseung also weren't any different either. They, too, had been acting hyper-aware of their surrounding. Even a mosquito couldn't get near him!

Beomgyu felt like a child with constant supervision at this rate.

"No, nothing important," he answered shortly, the soup spoon in his right hand was then put down just beside the bowl.

"Then, why don't you eat your food?" Jay asked. The swordsman stood on the prince's left. Just like Yunjin, he too, noticed the lack of interest that Beomgyu had shown in his breakfast.

Beomgyu flashed a forced smile at the swordsman. "I don't feel like eating this tomato soup."

The two frowned. "But, isn't this your favourite?" they said in unison.

Hold on. Beomgyu's favourite breakfast was tomato soup. Himㅡliking tomato-based food? That's very unlikely!

"M-my favourite?" he stuttered.

No, both of them must have said it wrong.

Yunjin nodded absentmindedly. "You always have them every morning."

Beomgyu suddenly felt sick hearing that. He's sure tomato wasn't his favourite the last time he was alive. The thought of him eating that every morning already made him nauseous. Was this life Beomgyu enjoyed tomato soup for breakfast?

"Y-Your Highness, are you alright?" Jay turned his body towards the prince to inspect him who already had his mouth covered and looking pale.

"Yes. I'm alright." Beomgyu dismissed the worried swordsman with a feeble wave. He then took this moment to calm himself and tried not to think of any grimacing scenario in his mind. "Maybe from now on, you can ask the kitchen maid to stop making tomato soup for me," he added.

Yunjin nodded vigorously at him. "I will make a note of that, Your Highness."

Jay immediately signalled the court lady to put away the soup from their prince's sight. "Would there be anything you'd like to have, for now, Your Highness?" he asked. "I will let the kitchen maid know."

Beomgyu shook his head weakly. "No. I'm fine with this tea." Maybe a cup of hot tea was all he needed this morning.

It was then he noticed the absence of his advisor. "And where is Heeseung?" he asked, forehead instantly creased into a frown.

The advisor had always been with him most of the time; at least from his past life and the three days he had spent here, that's what he could conclude. Heeseung was hardly seen leaving his side unless for an unavoided situation.

"He was summoned to the court by the King early this morning," said Jay.

"For what does my brother need to summon him?" Beomgyu questioned.

Why would his brother summon a prince's advisor? Should there be something important, isn't he the one supposed to be there in Heeseung's place instead?

"I am not sure for what reason, but I can only assume they are going to discuss about your suitor and Princess Minjeong's."

This was so sudden. From tomato soup to a suitor?

"That's very sudden," Beomgyu muttered. "Don't you all think I'm still young for a suitor?" This time he looked to both Yunjin and Jay, genuinely waiting for them to answer him.

But Jay and Yunjinㅡwho were taking the unnecessary plate out of the dining tableㅡonly exchanged looks with each other before they turned their gaze back at the concerned prince.

"Your Highness, you're about to turn twenty-one in another four months," Yunjin said flatly as if Beomgyu just asked the silliest questions. Well, of course, she meant it in a good way, but just think of it ... Beomgyu wasn't even considered young for a suitor!

"And?" Beomgyu didn't get the context.

What's with age and getting a suitor?

"What's that got to do with me getting one?"

"Twenty-one is the eligible age to get a suitor, Your Highness," Jay replied firmly. "Actually, you are a little bit old for that. I mean, no offence to you, but the King found his other half at the age of eighteen. Even The Second Prince got married at nineteen."

"Prince Yeonjun also was engaged to The First Young Master Kang at fifteen," Yunjin chirpily exclaimed, and it didn't take her too long to realize that she wasn't allowed to speak of the "runaway" prince. Well, after the King forbid it, anyone who spoke about Yeonjun shall be punished.

"My apology, Your Highness. I shouldn't have mentioned him," she apologized softly.

"That's OK, Yunjin." Beomgyu flashed a weak smile.

Anyway, both of them were right about that. All of his older brothers found their other half at such an early age. But either way, they were quite young compared to him when they step into their marriage "journey". Even in this life too, nothing had changed for them except Yeonjun. And as far as Beomgyu remembered, he got married to the Crown Prince of  Vulcan at the age of twenty-one back then.

Wait... could it be his marriage going to be soon, once he reached twenty-one?

"But does that change anything if I get married or engaged?" Now this made his mood turn sour.

Why does an arranged marriage become a norm in most royal and noble families? It not only makes a person uncomfortable but it's also gave the burden to fit all the standards and expectations. Maybe his two older brothers were lucky to find a great match through this awful situation, but, Beomgyu was sure the last time he was in this scenario, it didn't end well for him.

"It does. Since you're a royal family member," Jay stated as if Beomgyu should take note of the fact he was about to say. "It is very important for your family to find you a suitable suitor. It's for the royal bloodline and the kingdom's future."

Then, I'd rather die and be reborn as a tree instead. He thought.

"I bet Lady Kim is the one excited about this," Beomgyu mumbled.

"Pardon?"

"Nothing." Beomgyu shook his head slightly. "Will the meeting be that long?" He took the served tea in front and sipped it, taking note of how the temperature had cool down a bit.

"Probably. But I think it should be done before noon," replied Jay simply.

"Well then," Beomgyu paused, putting the teacup on its saucer. "Should I go pay my sick father a visit whilst the meeting still going?"

Both Yunjin and Jay looked at the prince dumbfoundedly.

"Butㅡ" the two subordinates said at once before turning to each other with unreadable expressions.

Sensing there was something he didn't know, Beomgyu immediately asked, "What is it? What's with that look you guys share?"

Jay averted his gaze instantly from the prince, which left Yunjin at the edge of the bear den.

"Huh Yunjin, do I have to repeat my word?" He then turned to Jay. "Or should I hear an explanation from you too, Park Jeongseong?"

Beomgyu normally wouldn't call them by their full name but when he needed to inquire about something important that was worth his curiosity, he won't hesitate to do it. And this was when he used the "prince" card on them.

"Your Highness," Yunjin trailed off her word. Trying to find a better but simple explanation. "I'm sure there's no need for a visit to King Minsu's quarter. I believe the royal physicians are doing their best to treat him. I even heard that Lady Kim has been taking care of King Minsu's well-being greatly. Though it's kind of strange that she never let anyone in the chamber except for the appointed physician and herself."

"That's true. Even the King is not allowed to be there. So why should you go?" Jay added before he realized what he had said. A sudden silence crept into the dining hall.

Beomgyu turned at the swordsman with a deep frown covering his feature. "What do you mean by that?"

"IㅡI mean...." Jay stuttered as he looked at Yunjin for help.

It was indeed strange. How could a former king's concubine command such a thing? Even to the reigning King at that? Beomgyu was sure his brother had the most power in the whole kingdom but how could he let a woman below his late mother's rank do this? If Minho lost his power over that woman, there must be something weird happened.

"Jay," he commanded grimly. "What do you mean nobody was allowed into my father's quarter?"

"Well... Lady Kim has instructed everyone in the palace to not come into King Minsu's quarter as she's afraid the illness might be contagious to others," explained Jay. He paused shortly to study Beomgyu's face. Noticing there's not much of a distressed sign on him, Jay continued, "There's a rumour that King Minsu's illness may cause a great calamity to the whole continent."

Now, this was the part where Beomgyu think the storyline had changed greatly.

Impossible. He thought.

An illness with great calamity? Or was it just a hoax to keep something hidden?

Before Jay managed to utter his words, Beomgyu stood up and walked out of the dining hall abruptly.

"Your Highness, wait!" The two subordinates shouted as they tried to catch up with the prince's step.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the empty hallway of the palace, making the palace's maids and guards turned their heads on the three persons.

"Your Highness!" Yunjin called but to no avail as Beomgyu kept his pace faster almost reaching his father's quarter. "Can you not be a lot quicker than this, Jay?"

"What do you think I'm doing right now? Crawling?" Jay yelled, panting as he too was running to catch the prince.

As for Beomgyu, the only thing he could think of at that time was to get into his father's chamber. Because if what the two said was right, he had to check on it himself. And if it's true that Lady Kim forbid every single soul from coming to his father's quarter, then he would be the first one to break those commands.

And true to be told, as soon as he arrived at the main entrance of his father's quarter, the two guards on patrol immediately stopped his way with their long, sharp, and shiny spearㅡmaking cross in front of the prince that no room could let him pass.

"What are you doing? Let me through!" Beomgyu said through gritted teeth.

"My apology, Your Highness. But we were instructed by Lady Kim to keep watch on the entrance and should not let anyone go in," explained one of the guards.

"But this is my father's quarter! And I am the prince of this kingdom!" He said sternly, channelling the power he had over them.

"I acknowledge that, Your Highness. But, the King also has put a command to the whole palace. I apologize for the harshness, but, we only do our responsibility as lowly palace guards."

Beomgyu clenched his fist, trying to ease his anger from being lashed out at the two guards. After all, they weren't wrong about the last part. Though Beomgyu was one of the royals, he would never create any chaos that would affect someone else.

"Your Highness," Jay called softly. His hand gently tap on the prince's shoulder just to test the water. When he saw no reaction coming from Beomgyu, he continued, "I think we should go."

"No." Beomgyu firmly answered. He turned to Jay and flashed those eyes that the swordsman already knew its meaning.

Looking that Beomgyu would not budge from his place, Jay inched closer to the prince's side until he was close enough to whisper in his ear. "There's another way to sneak in. For now, it's better to draw away all eyes on you, Your Highness." He pulled away after but still made eye contact with the latter.

Beomgyu tensed upon hearing that. Jay's words managed to make him put down his anger and 'want' instantly. Something about 'all eyes on him' made him shiver and his head flooded with so many questions.

Who were these people that 'watched' him? What was their intention? And who's the one behind it?

Before Beomgyu could utter a word, a  high-pitched voice of a young woman echoed through the area.

"Choi Beomgyu!"

Minjeong? Beomgyu thought.

He turned around fast enough that he had no time to register any information in his brain about this life's Minjeong. And that's when his eyes met with a petite, but a very beautiful young lady that almost mirrored his look.

There, walking toward him, was his fraternal twin sister; The Princess of Lenus, Choi Minjeong.

Minjeong instantly jumped at him and pulled the younger into a bear hug as soon as she was in front of him, which caught the younger by surprise. "Goodness, you're alright! I've been looking for you everywhere!" she exclaimed.

Beomgyu was speechless at the sudden greeting. This wasn't what he expected from Minjeong, and hold on, was this how they always interact with each other before? Because the Princess Minjeong that he had known previously was the opposite of this.

He remembered how the two of them used to be so competitive towards each other despite being fraternal twins that were two months apart.

Yes, Beomgyu was born two months apart from Minjeong. It was one of the most remarkable events to the whole continent that the late Queen had given birth to a pair of twins with a two months gap from one another, it had become an odd occurrence to the royal family.

Many theories and rumours had speculated about the prince's and the princess's birth, even the royal seer had predicted unfateful events that going to unfold after the Queen gave birth to them.

When Beomgyu first heard about it (he accidentally overheard a few people at the marketplace gossiping about it when he sneaked out of the palace once), he couldn't help but feel how ridiculous it sounds. But again, when he looked back at all things that had happened for the whole twenty years of his life ... the prophecy does make sense.

One of them being his mother.

It was said that the late Queen had died three days after giving birth to Beomgyuㅡafter two months of bearing the pain.

Many have said the prince's existence was a curse to her that the unborn child had sucked all the life in her when he was in her womb during the 'gap'. This situation only occurred to a mother who carried a "healer" in her.

And that fact always made him feel inferior in some ways towards Minjeong.

Being born as a healer was a curse. He was nothing but a living monster that killed his mother.

Like ... what else he could do with healing? Can he save a fallen kingdom?

Unlike his siblings, Beomgyu does not bear any Air Magic that most Lenus royal members have. Knowing that the fourth prince has not inherited any of the King's power, Beomgyu was labelled as weak by everyone and tended to be overlooked and underestimated.

No matter how he tried to look at it on the bright side, and no matter how hard he tried to overcome the weaknesses, Beomgyu still could never have something that Minjeong has.

In fact, most of Lenus' royal members yielded the same power. This was what made them different from any of the Lenus people. Only the royal family members can manipulate the Air Magic. But in Beomgyu's case, all he had was the healing power that he got from his late mother.

Healing was the only thing he was able to do and Beomgyu always thought it was unfair that he was the only Lenus royal member being the peculiar one out of his family and relatives.

How could Minjeong has it and he's not? They were twins after all. Why does God have to make a difference this much?

So it was fair wasn't it for him to be mad?

Because to everyone's eyes, he was just a healer.

Useless.

And did not deserve the right to be born into the royal family.

In everyone's eyes, he was just a burden that should get rid of; like a plague to be precise.

Maybe this was the reason why Lady Kim pushed him out of Lenus in the first place.

"How are you feeling?" Minjeong pulled herself from the embrace and inspect every single spot her eyes could see on Beomgyu's features as she held onto the younger's face, which without her realising, she was squishing hard his brother's cheeks. "I heard from Heeseung that you're doing fine, is it true? Are you sure you're alright?"

But again, looking at this Minjeong, was it worth getting mad about?

"Um, can you at least let go of my face? I can't even speak properly."

"Oops! I'm sorry," she said sheepishly, hands instantly letting go of Beomgyu's face. "How are you, brother?"

"I am doing fine, Minjeong," Beomgyu said, eyes carefully studying his twin's worried expression. "You don't have to worry about me."

"How can I not be worried? You fell off Haru and lost consciousness for a day! And now you don't even call me sister! Of course, I have the right to be worried!"

"You're exaggerating."

"Don't even think I don't know any of your life updates even if you live this far from my quarter," Minjeong cut him. "And what are you doing here? Don't you realize this is a forbidden area now?"

Beomgyu didn't answer her.

"God, you could have been in trouble if Lady Kim caught you here!"

Tired of waiting for the reply, Minjeong used all of her strength to pull his brother away from their father's quarter.

Once they were out of sightㅡnow that the two were walking in the secret garden that their father made for their late motherㅡMinjeong quickly put off her bright and warm image.

"You never had any accident with Haru before, so why now?" she asked, stopping her step as she turned to her twin on the right.

That's one of the best questions to ask, but Beomgyu had no idea how to answer it.

"How am I supposed to know?" he shrugged. "Haru probably not feeling well that day, she must have some condition that I failed to notice as her owner." Beomgyu's legs followed Minjeong's action. He too, halted his move as he talked.

"You think so?" Minjeong muttered as her eyes now stared at Beomgyu with an expression that was quite hard for him to decipher. "For all I know ... anyone in this palace who knew about you and Haru would have been shocked if they hear that you fell off  her."

She walked a few steps forward, leaving his brother behind before she turn to Beomgyu again. This time, she looked and anticipated what his twin going to reply to her.

"IㅡI don't know." That's all Beomgyu could answer.

He had thought about this for the past three days he was here, but it was hard to conclude it because he has no proof.

Even if it was true that someone planned on hurting him, was it worth the attempt? Should they try a little harder, knowing that he's a healer? Because a fall like that won't kill him immediately.

Minjeong then moved towards her brother, reaching for his hand and holding it gently. Her eyes never left his.

"Beomgyu-ya, listen to me." She pulled her brother closer, and now the height difference between them was so obvious that Minjeong's head only reach his chin, which she had to look up to meet his eyes.

"I'm not sure if you're aware of it or not, but the palace isn't safe anymore. They are watching us in every corner of our home," she spoke in a hushed tone, but quite clear for the latter to listen. "We can't trust anyone but ourselves," she added.

Beomgyu trying to find any hidden message behind it or any sign that she was playing around. But, all he could see was seriousness. And knowing Minjeong she could never pull such a trick; past or present.

"And what do you expect me to do then? Fight them?" Beomgyu asked, as in challenging his sister's words. "Do you think I can do anything with this useless healing power I have? I'm weak just like what everyone said. What makes them think I'm a threat?"

Minjeong's eyed the younger disapprovingly. "You are not weak nor your power is useless. If you think you're weak and that the healing ability you got from our mother is useless, then what makes her? Do you think you would be here if the power she yield is useless? Do you think she could deliver you safely if she's weak?"

Beomgyu was not expecting that kind of words coming from Minjeong.

"You just need to polish yourself a bit. And keep down on whatever you're trying to do for now," she muttered as she fold her arms in from of her torso. The expression on her face clearly does not even match the ivory cape dress she's wearing. "All eyes are on you now, brother. You better watch yourself."

Somehow the words came like a Deja vu. Did Jay and Minjeong speak about the same thing? What's with these eyes that watching him?

"So." The tone of her voice suddenly changed. "I heard Lady Kim came to see you yesterday," Minjeong instantly changed the air surrounding them. "Did she say anything to you?"

Beomgyu was still not used to this behaviour of Minjeong. One time she looked serious and cold, then she was all bright and smiley, and then she suddenly sounded genuinely playful.

"No. Nothing. But she looked worried about my condition." Beomgyu replied.

A warm smile crept on his face when he saw Minjeong pick up one of the fallen Magnolia's petals from the ground; caressing it gently on her palm before she blew it, watching the petal fly with the soft blowing wind she made.

The pinkish bloom of Magnolia in this garden had always made him content. It was his mother's favourite. And being here felt like he was close enough to his mother that he never met. Even the scent invading him was very comforting.

His brother, Prince Chanhee, used to say that their mother smelled like these Magnolias. Since then, Beomgyu frequently hanging around this garden during his leisure time.

"Well, that's great. Because the last time I saw her, she keeps mentioning  about getting us a suitor." Minjeong finished her sentence with a playful smile.

Reading the expression plastered on the two subordinates standing behind them, Minjeong could not help herself from smiling when she saw the stiff expression on Beomgyu. "I supposed you have heard it today, no?"

Beomgyu cleared his throat, hiding the discomfort he felt with a stoic face. "I believe this is not the time to play around, sister."

Now, it's Minjeong who challenged him. "I'm not?"

"Then, what's with that stupid grin on your face?"

"Am I not allowed to show any reaction to that?" Minjeong flashed a  smirk. "Why? What kind of reaction would you show me then? Sad? Worry? Or happy?"

"That's none of your concern." Beomgyu rolled his eyes in annoyance as he took a few big steps forward. As long as he didn't see that stupid grin Minjeong was showing him.

"Hey, wait for me!"

The last thing he wanted to talk about was the suitor's topic.

Minjeong chuckled as she caught up with her twin's step. "You sure don't know how to take a joke."

"Shut up," Beomgyu retorted, clearly annoyed. "And what are you going to do about it then? Are you really happy about this?" The question coming from the prince sounds genuinely curious.

"About what? This arranged marriage?" Minjeong tilted her head slightly, brow raised. "Well, I don't feel anything. But I sure will embrace it as it is. After all, we are bound to face this someday. You should know this already. We, as royal members are fated for this. Where else can you run? Are you going to pull the same action as Yeonjun oppa? Tsk... I bet he's living his best life now that he had abandoned us behind."

"He's not abandoning us, Minjeong. There must be a reason why he does that," he retorted.

"A decade and more to count... isn't that already enough to explain? And that letter," Minjeong paused with a deep sigh. "That fucking letter is the reason for all this."

Beomgyu noticed the irritation in Minjeong's voice, so he decided not to drag this conversation any longer.

"Don't worry," he said softly. "I won't run. As long as I can decide on my own, I won't."

Minjeong smiled upon hearing that. "Did you mean what you say?"

Beomgyu nodded.

"Then, what do you think about those candidates from Vulcan and Frostine?"

Both of them were a major 'no' to him. How could Minjeong ask him that now?

"Pretentious," Beomgyu said it with no hesitation as if he knew them wellㅡwhich was true. "Wicked and self-centred," he added with full of hatred in his tone.

"How can you say that when we've never met any of them, yet?"

Because I knew them.

Of course, he couldn't say that out loud. But if only Minjeong knew that the two of them were the reason for his deathㅡhis miserable fate... she probably wouldn't like it too.

"Well... my gut told me so!"

Minjeong's smile never left her face. She found her twin's description fascinating. "And what if I said one of those men going to be your future husband?"

Oh hell no.

"Minjeong-ah, just mind your own business, alright?"

"But this is a serious question! What will you doㅡhey! Where are you going? I'm not done talking!"

ON the other side of the kingdom city, a man in a black cloak walks down the dark path, stepping over the muddy puddle with his bootsㅡnot even once has he shown any sign to halt his step or turning around. His face was completely covered with the big hooded cloak he wore, and his presence went unnoticed by other people.

He seemed focused and knew where he should go because, by the time he arrived in front of the tavern at the corner of the narrow alley, he immediately entered it.

However, his presence caused a silence in the tavern, and every move he made was followed by all eyes in that place.

The man walked straight to the bar, head still hanging low under the hood.

“What can I get for ya?" the bartender asked nonchalantly as he wiped off the wet beer glass.

"The North Guy," said the man.

The bartender scanned him from head to everywhere his eyes could see. "What business do you have with him?"

Without wasting any more time, the man pulled out a pouch of gold coins from his cloak and put it on the wooden bar table with a thud.

"Of course, it's none of my business isn't it?" The bartender laughed before taking the pouch, to make sure it wasn't a fake gold coin in, he opened the pouch and inspect its content hastily.

Happy with the content he saw, the bartender continued, "He's in the room upstairs. Two from the left."

The man strode to the tavern stairs at the right side of the two-stories building with a short thanks, before climbing the wooden staircase carefully. As he made his way up, he managed to scan the interior of the tavern whilst searching for the said room he was told to go to.

Thereㅡtwo from his leftㅡhe finally found the room.

Taking a glance behind him twice, he quickly opened the door and made his way in. But what welcomed him at that time was only darkness. No sign of a soul in that room and he was certain of it.

He was about to light up a fire on his palm when a voice suddenly interrupted him.

"No need for the light, Sunoo. I prefer talking this way." The foreign man's voice talked lowly and there was a hint of a dismissive tone in his voice.

"Yes, Your Majesty." The manㅡSunooㅡcomplied with the order. He lifted off his cloak hood and bowed to the unseen man in front of him.

"Now... what news do you bring for me from Lenus?"

Chapter 5: Four

Chapter Text

THE ginormous mahogany door was opened abruptly by an unseen force, followed by heavy footsteps coming towards the entrance. Not long after, a tall and well-built man marched towards the hallway, spreading his dark aura to his surroundings. Letting every living being in the palace know of his presenceㅡhis return to be exact.

However, as soon as he stepped into the throne chamber, there was no one occupying the room but the empty iron throne that he was sure has grown colder since the last time he was there. And considering Frostine was located far to the North of the continent, the weather here has never been warm. It's either a few digits above zero degrees Celsius or below.

Kai walked straight for his throne and sat on it. Instantly, a sense of familiarity rushed through his system as he relaxed on the throne with his eyes shut close while inhaling the faint warm sandalwood scent that had been lingering around the chamber.

That made him question himselfㅡhow long has he been away from here?

"You have returned, Your Majesty."

The voices pulled Kai away from his thought. He opened his eyes immediately and was welcomed by two men whose appearance mimicked one another ㅡtall, pale skin, blond hair and facial expression that was cold as the kingdom's weather. Even the way they dressed was mirroring each other; especially the long black cloak and the high-cut combat boot that reached their calves.

The two males instantly kneeled and bowed their heads to the young king before they rose back to their position.

"Aha! Right on time! I was about to summon you two here." Kai grinned, glad that he finally could see his two right-hand men in person.

"If I knew you would return today, I would have asked the servants to prepare you a welcoming feast, Your Majesty." The older of the two incomers spoke.

"No need for that, Soobin," Kai replied, waving his hand dismissively. "I'd rather be greeted home like this."

"And here I thought you're still looking around Lenus, no?" The other males spoke flatly. His face barely showed any expression other than an icy and stoic gaze. But if anyone ever looked at him, they will be awestruck by his beauty, especially the mole on his tall nose, his dark red lips and the pointy ears. "Changing of a plan, I suppose?" he added, before moving to the other side of the chamber and lit up the candles hanging around the stone wall with a swift move of his handㅡinstantly, the dim-lit chamber gleamed with light.

Kai smiled as he propped his head on his palm, leaning lazily on his throne. "I was thinking about extending my adventure there, Sunghoon. But the weather annoyed me."

Sunghoon nodded in response. He then exchanged glances with his fellow comrade. "Isn't that what Soobin has been telling you before?"

Upon being mentioned, Soobin immediately interjected. "And yet you still insist on leaving."

It was true. When Kai first proposed the idea of his 'little adventure' out of Frostine, the two males opposed it so much. Tons of reasons being thrown, but Kai never listened to them, nor did he explain further reasons why he wanted to venture outside of his palace. So when he left, Soobin and Sunghoon had been in charge of his presence in the kingdomㅡmainly to fulfil some of the duties that Kai could not manage to do and take care of as the kingdom's ruler.

Two years had passed, and now Kai finally returned. But it did not guarantee that he was leaving again or not.

"Well, I'm here now, isn't it?" Kai proudly said, as if his presence now may cause great changes for the past two years, he was absent.

"Indeed." The two men agreed.

"So, how was the court doing during my absence?" Kai asked, his tone changed drastically when the topic of his court was getting into the conversation. He straightened up his sitting position as he waited for his two advisors to speak.

Though he was not present in any of the court matter for the past two years, Kai still cared about his responsibility. In fact, he'd been in touch with either Sunghoon or Soobin to keep himself updated on the kingdom's matter. After all, isn't that what a king supposed to do?

"The court has been doing fine, Your Majesty," said Soobin. "All affairs related to our people is under control."

"That's wonderful," Kai remarked. "I shouldn't get worried about it, do I?" he chuckled.

"However," Sunghoon now had his attention fixed on the King. "With your absence for the past two years, it has caused wariness among The Elders."

The Elders were the higher nobles in Frostine's court. They acted mainly as the King's supporters that held powers in some of the kingdom's decision-making. For an instant, the selection of the kingdom's ruler and the royal marriage. This system had been going on for the last centuries, and if Kai had to be honest, he hated how The Elders acted upon him. It felt like the royals were being controlled like a puppet by them.

"Ah...." Kai nodded, trailing his words as he began to register the information he was told. "I almost forgot about them."

"They are proposing a marriage, Your Majesty," Sunghoon added as his eyes darted between Kai and Soobin, trying to read the room. Though he did not receive any sort of unsettling response from Kai, Sunghoon still could read it from his unmoving eyes. "They think it is time for you to find your royal consort."

"Marriage, huh?" Kai laughed cynically. The thought of hearing about a marriage proposal after his return was something unexpected. But, he knew the day would come, and it finally did. "Are they trying to detain me with this proposal?" he muttered.

He knew why The Elders proposed such an idea to him. Kai knew that they were using marriage to confine him in his kingdom and put him under their supervision just like how they did it with his late father. Growing up under constant pressure from his own court was not the best experience, and Kai was struggling to end the cycle. But, if this was what The Elders wanted to play with him, then ... he was up for it.

Soobin cleared his throat. "Since you have made your return, I believe they will propound this matter to you once you attend the court, Your Majesty."

Kai heaved a sigh as he leaned on his throne. "Of course. They must have planned all this long ago."

Sunghoon turned his gaze to Soobin and gave the older male a firm nod, to which the latter responded instantly by conjuring a scroll out of thin air that landed gently on his opened palm. Soobin pulled the scroll open on both the upper and bottom sides of the crusty-yellowish parchment to inspect its content before handing it to Kai.

"What's this?" Kai asked, brows furrowed as he took the scroll from Soobin.

"This scroll contains the detail of the royal consort candidates," replied the latter. "The Elders have selected a few names of the nobles around the kingdom that might be up to your liking."

Without saying much, Kai opened the scroll and read its content. "This is ridiculous!" he said. "What were they thinking when they made this list?" Kai could not help but laugh at the absurdity.

Sunghoon and Soobin could only watch the young ruler convey his expression. They knew Kai hated the whole idea of marriage, but there was nothing they could do to make their king at ease. After all, the decision is going to be made fully by The Elders, even though Kai himself was opposing it.

"This list is sort of boring to me," Kai said nonchalantly, as he closed the scroll, throwing it away unbothered. "None of them appeal to me."

Sunghoon's forehead immediately creased with confusion. He knew Kai since they were in their early teen. Throughout those years, not even once had he heard or known what the latter's interest in someone would be like. Knowing Kai, Sunghoon was sure no one ever piqued his interest 'that' way. Well, Kai himself was as cold and straight as a stone wall. He barely showed his emotion, unless it was for his younger sister, Princess Bahiyyih. And Sunghoon could tell Kai was hopeless when it came to social interaction. So, how could he get himself a partner?

"Well then, what kind of person you're looking for?" Sunghoon asked.

Honestly, Kai had no idea what the best answer to this question was. He, too, had never thought of anything related to marriage or of his future consort. That kind of matter has never crossed his mind before. However, during his stay in Lenus for the past couple of weeks, Kai finally found someone that piqued his interest. It's just that ... was it possible for him to make that person his consort?

"Your Majesty?" Sunghoon carefully eyed Kai's face.

"Lenus." That's all Kai said.

Soobin and Sunghoon frowned. What was Kai trying to say here? What's with Lenus and the question Sunghoon asked earlier?

"I am looking for someone like The Fourth Prince of Lenus as my consort," Kai added and there was no humour in his words as he said that. "Choi Beomgyu. I want him."

"B-but, Your Majesty.... Lenus and Frostine are not an ally," Soobin remarked. "We never involve in each other political events, so how can you imagine of a marriage with their royal?"

"I know."

"Are you proposing a plan, Your Majesty?" Sunghoon inquired. There was something about Kai's aura that made him feel déjà vu. Was Kai really trying to come out with a plan that may bring misery to his people?

"Yes," Kai answered shortly.

Sunghoon expected it. "What cost will it bring us?"

"Nonsense!" Soobin snapped before Kai managed to utter a single word. "Forgive me, Your Majesty. If any of your plans will only cause great disaster to our kingdom, then, I will do anything to go against you."

"Worry not, Soobin. I will never bring harm to Frostine," Kai replied, the voice had never been any calm than this. "But I do have a plan to get what I want," he added.

Both Soobin and Sunghoon were left speechless. They changed glances with one another before fixing their gaze back at their king.

"Do tell us," Sunghoon said.

Beomgyu could not stop his mind from wondering about all the things that happened earlier this morning. There was too much information that he had to process, and he didn't know if there was any sanity left in him before he lose himself again.

He's still trying to figure out why Lady Kim prohibited anyone from entering his father's quarter, and he wondered if his father's sickness was real or just a mere hoax to keep something hidden. And with all these changes coming to surprise him, Beomgyu wasn't sure how he could survive this lifeㅡwait! The arranged marriage was definitely the worst to come.

How can they think about marriage during this time? Beomgyu thought.

Should he just run away like Yeonjun?

But does avoiding this obstacle will solve everything? How's that give any justice to this second chance he got from Fate?

"This is absurd." Beomgyu heaved a sigh. "Why are they busy getting me a suitor? Shouldn't they think how to heal Father instead?" he added, irritated.

Now that his movement was being supervised and controlled, how could he do something to stop it?

But the real question was, why were they eyeing him like a prisoner? What did this life Beomgyu had done for he had to be supervised like this? Was he a criminal? A bad prince?

"Ugh, what is going on now, Fate?"

Yes, Fate!

Beomgyu was sure she knew something. Since she's the creator of all living beings' fate, there's no doubt that she could help him with a few hints. But this was ... a bit ridiculous, isn't it? How on earth he could communicate with a divine being?

If I knew it's gonna be this confusing, I'd rather

"Die?"

The familiar voice interrupted Beomgyu's train of thought he didn't wait any second to turn his back around.

"Hello, my dear. I heard you call for me," Fate said, softly chuckling when he saw the surprised look on Beomgyu's face.

"F-Fate?" All the words he was about to say were stuck at the back of his throat. There was no way he was seeing what he was seeing now. Was this really the Fate he met before coming to this new life?

"Yes, this is me."

Beomgyu didn't know if he was hallucinating or not at this rate. Because standing in front of him was Fate. She looked very similar to the last time he saw herㅡlong raven hair, red flowy robe and the golden sun headpiece on top of her head.

"Am I dreaming?" Beomgyu rubbed his eyes frantically. "How did you..."

"Think of this as a part of your hallucination, alright?" she replied, before approaching Beomgyu, reaching for his hands just like before. "You seemed so lost, my dear. How's life doing so far? Have you got the answer you need?"

"I... I feel lost because of these changes you made. Why it's different now from the past life I had?"

Fate caressed Beomgyu's hair gently and stared into his eyes with full tenderness. "The changes are made for a reason. I won't lead you to this path if you're not capable enough to face it. Trust me, sweet boy. It helps you."

"How does it help me?"

"You will get the answer over time." Fate let go of his hands and walked to the nearby window, observing the night scenery quietly.

"Butㅡ"

"Second chance could never be the same as the first time," Fate cut him. Her eyes still lingered on the view outside of the chamber. "All you need to do is adjust yourself in this new setting," she paused, whirling herself back facing Beomgyu. "And write the chapter accordingly."

"It's too much for me to bear," Beomgyu muttered.

"Of course," Fate softly chuckled. "Nothing is made to be easy, my dear. And bear in mind; do not put any trust in anyone. A nice person that you used to know might be wicked, and those who are evil might be nicer than you think."

A soft knock coming from the chamber's door made Beomgyu avert his gaze away from Fate, instantly, facing the closed door.

"Your Highness, may I come in?"

It's Heeseung! He thought.

The advisor's faint voice could be heard behind the door followed by another soft knock. Beomgyu immediately rushed with panic and fear. What if he saw Fate in here? Heeseung going to freak out!

"A moment, please!" he hollered.

"Your Highness? Is everything alright?"

"Quick," he said in a harsh whisper as he turned to Fate, and much to his surprise and relief, Fate was nowhere to be seen. It's as if she suddenly vanished into thin air when he's not looking.

"Fate?" he called. But no one answered his call.

Maybe she's really gone? Or did he just speak to no one earlier?

"I'm coming in," Heeseung announced firmly, and not long after, the chamber door opened.

With the last remaining second, Beomgyu immediately took one of the books from the bookshelves behind him.

"Your Highness," greeted Heeseung.

"What brings you here at this time, Heeseung?" Beomgyu asked as he flipped the book page, reading nothing in the process. He tried his best not to add any more unnecessary questionable action, so he pretended like he was really into the book he was holding, and hoped it would trick Heeseung from thinking the worse scenario happened.

"And you are reading a book around this hour?"

Beomgyu could hear the puzzled tone in Heeseung's voice, and though he was not facing him, he could see the raised brow and frown on the latter's face.

"Why not?"

"Well, as far as I remember, you're not keen on the book, Your Highness."

"I'm bored," Beomgyu replied to him weakly before he spun around. "What's that you bring?" he pointed at the tray in Heeseung's hand.

Heeseung instantly looked at his right hand. "Yunjin told me that you skipped your dinner earlier," he explained as he made his way to the coffee table. "And I think you should at least eat something after seeing how little of food you had during lunch."

Beomgyu didn't say any more words as he eyed the advisor serving whatever food he brought. Now that he noticed, this Heeseung never drop the formality with him even when they were left alone.

"You know that you can drop the formality when it's just us around, right Heeseung?"

The latter smiled. "Of course, I do, Your High- Beomgyu."

"Now that's much better." Putting the book back on the shelf, Beomgyu walked to where Heeseung stood in front of the coffee table and sat on one of the vacant mahogany chairs. "I'll eat this. But only if you join me." Beomgyu immediately motioned Heeseung to sit on the chair opposite him.

"Sure." Without waiting any longer Heeseung sat on the chair Beomgyu pointed earlier. He never averted his gaze elsewhere as if waiting for the prince's next move.

"Hmm, cheese platter and strawberry for a late-night snack?" Beomgyu snickered. "You sure know my taste."

Heeseung flashed a little smile. "Considering how a picky eater you can be sometimes; I think this kind of food will satisfy you. And strawberries can never go wrong. You like them."

For once, this was something Beomgyu was familiar with. He's indeed a picky eater and strawberry had always been his favourite. Back then, Yeonjun always sneaked him the late-night snack to his chamber after the palace's residents and maids had gone to dreamland. He remembered how the third prince quietly got into the palace kitchen, then back at his chamber and they would eat together in the dim-lit room, where the only light source they had was coming from the moonlight shining through the tall window.

It was indeed a beautiful memory that Beomgyu cherished. But that past life could never be repeated in this life. And Yeonjun was gone.

"I always like them," Beomgyu mumbled before he munched one of the heart-shaped fruits. "Thank you for this, Heeseung. You are indeed my great advisor."

"I'm glad you like it."

And the room was filled with silence. Heeseung only eyed the prince who ate the food in contentment, and he didn't have the heart to interrupt him with small talk. But, whenever Beomgyu asked him something, he would reply to him immediately, with no hesitation.

"I heard from Jay that the king summoned you earlier this morning," Beomgyu started.

"Yes. His Majesty did."

"Do tell," Beomgyu paused, putting a small piece of cheese into his mouth. "For what reason he required my advisor, on top of that, without my knowledge? I really don't like to be in the dark."

Heeseung nodded in understatement. "I believe you've heard about them getting you a suitor."

"Them?" Now this managed to get Beomgyu's attention wholly. He took another bite of the strawberry before putting the small fork aside.

"Yes. The king and the court member. Apparently, they were asking me about your preference in," Heeseung paused, trying to get the right word to explain his point. "your life partner."

Beomgyu rolled his eyes. "Why not ask me instead? I am the one getting a suitor! Not you, or them."

"I try my best to put the word on your behalf," Heeseung continued. "But it seems like they already have a suitable candidate in mind."

"Aha, that's interesting," Beomgyu scoffed. "Is it the Crown Prince of Vulcan?"

Heeseung frowned. "Vulcan?"

"Yes!" Beomgyu was sure his instinct could never go wrong this time. If it's going to be the Crown Prince of Vulcan, Beomgyu had to do something to make this matchmaking plan a failure.

"Beomgyu." Heeseung seemed hesitant to proceed with his word. "I may not know how much you've hurt yourself that you forgot this important event, and even though I may not know who the chosen candidate would be.... I believe Vulcan is not on the list."

Now, it's Beomgyu's turn to frown. "And why is that?"

"Because Vulcan is currently oppressing half of the continent with their sovereignty. They are now on their way to influence the remaining free land to be on their side, which left Lenus, Frostine, Zion and Alda."

Of course, Vulcan had been doing this long before, even in previous life. They have been killing thousands of innocent people, and yet, Beomgyu only discovered this during his last moment of life. He was so dumb and naïve back then. He should not accept the proposal if only his father was not convincing him about the great advantage he could bring to this kingdom by this prosper unity.

"How can you be so sure, Heeseung?"

The advisor tilted his head, confused. "What do you mean by that?"

"I believe the decision is not fully made by my brother. So, I don't know if I can believe your word regarding that."

Lady Kim was indeed the problem here. Beomgyu should be more careful with her, and trust no one at this point.

"What about Frostine?" he quickly changed the topic. "Have they not done anything against this war?"

"I heard Frostine has not taken any sides since the war started. Even when the bordering land in Alda and Zion has been attacked several times, they never give any aid to them, let alone participate in any of the opposing wars," Heeseung explained. "They are just unbothered."

Beomgyu nodded understandingly. "Is the current king ... Kai?"

"Kai?" Heeseung was taken aback by the question. On top of that, how could Beomgyu casually address the Frostine king like they used to be friends before? "You mean His Majesty King Huening Kai?"

"Yes, him."

Heeseung nodded in response. "He is the current king, ascended the throne a decade ago after the previous king had died."

"Do you think he'll be on the list of the candidate?" Beomgyu inquired, expecting an honest reply from his advisor.

"I have no word for that. Since we are never an ally, to begin with, wishing for marriage seems hopeless. Plus, Frostine has never opened its door for any political involvement with any of the kingdoms on this continent. So, I don't have much to say."

Somehow Beomgyu felt so unsettled after knowing some of this information. What if Vulcan came to their door and proposed marriage in exchange for power and protection? He knew worse things would come his way. But he felt none of the ideas in his mind would give any better solution. It's like running from a tiger's dent, only to end up in a crocodile's nest.

But then, Fate's words started to linger in his mind.

A nice person that you used to know might be wicked, and those who are evil might be nicer than you think....

Should he run into the crocodile's nest?

What cost would it give him this time?

Beomgyu knew he should change the pattern of this current chapter in order to have a better ending.

"Beomgyu?"

Heeseung's voice made him startled a bit, but Beomgyu was quick from showing his expression to the advisor.

"Yeah?"

"You seem troubled. Mind telling me what's bothering your mind?"

Beomgyu softly chuckled. "Nothing to be concerned about, Heeseung. I was just thinking."

"Of what?" The advisor asked.

"My suitor," Beomgyu paused as he took the small fork again to eat the half-eaten strawberry. "What do you think of Huening Kai?"

And that question managed to make the calm-looking advisor's eye round in surprise.
