Summary
The book is dog eared, the cover cracking with horizontal lines around the binding from bending it over and over — she‘s read it a dozen times. And she’s pretty sure Lupe knew this because she didn’t hide the letter in Jess‘s suitcase or fold it between her clothes where she could have found it on time and said something about it. No, Lupe is anything if not evasive and Jess is pretty sure she knew Jess wouldn’t pick the book back up until she was already on the train or in her childhood bedroom. That's why she put it there, neatly tucked between two pages right toward the end.
All it says is „To Jess“, in her handwriting and for the first few weeks, that’s all Jess reads of it.
Jess spends the winter in Canada, Lupe is in Texas.
