Work Text:

“Jonathan! Wake up!” Sock stood next to Jonathan’s bed, trying to shake him awake. Instead of responding, he rolled over with a groan.

“Go away.” Jonathan mumbled under his breath, clutching a pillow and draping it over his head. Sock rolled his eyes and hovered over the bed, staring down at the half-asleep teenager beneath him.

“Don’t you know what day it is?” Sock crossed his arms across his chest.

“...”

“Come ooooon, get up! It’s important!” Sock groaned, dramatically raking a hand down the side of his face. “I’m not going to stop bothering you until you get up.”

“...”

“Jonathan. Jonathan. Jonathan. Jonathan. Jonathan. Jona-”

“ALRIGHT! I’m up, now what the hell do you want? It’s eight in the morning on a Saturday, leave me alone.” Jonathan shot up, about to launch the pillow in his hands at Sock’s head. Not that it would hit him, it would just give him some satisfaction.

“Happy birthday!” Sock gleamed, pulling little handfuls of confetti out of his pocket and throwing them up in the air. The small squares of paper sunk to the floor, coating Jonathan’s bed and the surrounding carpet.

“I…what?” Jonathan rubbed his eyes, squinting at the calendar across his room. Sure enough, November 3rd. “Huh.”

“Happy birthday!! You’re what, 17 now? You’re turning into an old man!” Sock feigned a gasp before bursting into a fit of laughter. “Come on get up, you can’t just sleep all day! Today’s important!” A huge grin spread across the demon’s face, and not his normal smirk. It was a knowing grin, one that Jonathan wasn’t used to.

“Dude, it’s saturday. I’m not going anywhere. My mom is out, remember?” Jonathan reluctantly crawled out from under the sheets and stretched. He threw a hoodie over his t-shirt and stepped outside his bedroom, making his way downstairs. Once he made it downstairs he pointed to a note attached to a corkboard.

“I'll be back as soon as I can, gone on a business trip. We’ll celebrate tomorrow!” The note read. Jonathan crumpled it into a ball and tossed it into the trash.

“See? Told you.” He sighed, opening the fridge and pulling out a carton of milk.

“Where’s your imagination? Just because she isn't here doesn’t mean I’M not here!” Sock floated around the kitchen, eventually settling on a countertop and sitting on it. Jonathan sighed and got himself a bowl of cereal.

“You. You’re going to take me out on my birthday? Why?”

“Why?” Sock sat in stunned silence for a moment. “Because..because that's what friends do! We are friends, aren’t we jonathan?” Sock cocked his head at Jonathan.

“You’re a demon trying to make me kill myself.”

“But a friendly demon!” Sock frowned. “Come on, do you really have anything better to do today? You don’t hang out with anyone other than me anyway. It’s a special day, we have to do something! Plus, I already bought you a gift.” Sock smirked as Jonathan turned his head.

“You bought me a gift? Really?”

“Of course I did! Can’t have a birthday without presents, right?”

“That’s…actually really nice of you. Thanks, Sock.” Jonathan offered a smile, not the fake one that Sock was used to but an actual, genuine one. It made Sock’s heart beat a little faster, but he ignored it.

“I’ve got the whole day planned too! We’re gonna go to the arcade, we’re gonna walk around the park, we’re gonna see the shops in town, and we’re gonna celebrate! It’s gonna be so much fun, you’re gonna have the time of your life!” Sock smiled proudly, beaming at the plans he spent all night coming up with.

“I’m almost excited. You really have thought of everything, haven’t you?” Jonathan smiled again, this time paired with a laugh. Sock felt a small blush creep onto his cheeks, but he shook his head and tried to ignore it.

“Of course I have! I-”

Before Sock could finish his sentence, a booming sound came from the sky outside. It was a crack of thunder, hard and heavy. It didn’t take long for the clouds to erupt, winds and rain pouring down from the darkened sky. Sock stared out the window in complete silence, his mouth agape and his eyebrows sinking into a devastated emotion. Neither of them said anything for a couple minutes, until Sock floated away soundlessly and Jonathan called after him.

“Hey, where are you going? Sock!” Jonathan dropped his spoon and followed Sock back upstairs. He was sitting on the floor with his knees at his chest. Jonathan stood at the door for a moment before cracking it open and slowly getting to his level. He waited for Sock to speak first.

“I’m sorry.” Sock looked down at the floor. He fiddled with the inside of his hoodie pocket, something he did when he was nervous.

“For what? The rain? It’s not your fault. That’s just how it goes.” Jonathan shrugged, looking out the window. It was coming down even harder now, raindrops hitting the glass with audible force.

“It was supposed to be a fun day. We were supposed to go out. I wanted today to mean something to you, I wanted it to be memorable.” Sock spoke in a quiet tone, all his excitement from before was completely sucked out of him. Jonathan frowned, sighing. He sat quietly for a moment before putting an arm around Sock’s shoulders. Surprised, Sock looked up at him with wide eyes.

“I…want you to know that I appreciate everything you did. Or tried to do, I guess. Nobody’s ever done anything like that for me before, and…I think it’s really nice that you did. If you want…I still want to spend today with you. Even if we can’t go outside, we could still hang out in here. I can teach you how to play video games or something.” Jonathan's voice trailed off, a faint blush appearing on his pale face too.

“You really mean that?” Sock was still too surprised to say anything, barely managing a few words.

“Of course I do. Even though we can’t do everything you wanted to I still want to be around you today. That’s what friends do, isn’t it?” Jonathan got stuck on the word ‘friends’ but hoped Sock didn’t notice.

Sock smiled but didn’t say anything, just taking in everything Jonathan said. The atmosphere in the room was calm, peaceful. For once the two were just enjoying each other's company, no snide remarks to be made or no disinterested comments. Just bliss.

Jonathan suddenly stood up, extending a hand to Sock.

“Come on, you wanna play a game with me or not?” He smiled again, another soft one. Sock melted a little bit inside before a look of surprise flooded over his face.

“Oh! I almost forgot!” Sock jumped up and dashed out of the room, running out past Jonathan and into the hallway. When he returned, he held a small box in his hands. It was wrapped in green paper, it was done hastily and it wasn’t very pretty but Jonathan smiled wide when Sock shoved it into his hands. “Happy birthday!”

Jonathan pulled the ribbon off, letting it fall to the floor. Tearing through the paper, he laughed as he got through the packaging. Inside was a new pair of headphones, thick and shiny. His old ones had gotten damaged at school and he was in desperate need of new ones.

“Surprise!” Sock laughed as he watched the look of awe on Jonathan’s face.

“How did you pay for these? Do you know how expensive they are?” Jonathan immediately pulled them out of the box and put them over his ears, laughing in surprise as he realized they were a perfect fit.

“Don’t worry about it! I borrowed some money from my boss, if he hasn’t noticed yet he won’t anytime soon.” Sock and Jonathan stared at each other for a moment before bursting into laughter, which ended with the two of them holding onto each other for support. Once their laughing fit was over, Jonathan did something he’d never done before. He wrapped his arms around Sock and hugged him.

“Thank you, Sock.” You mumbled into the hood of Sock’s hoodie, his hair brushing against Sock’s hat. Sock didn’t know what to do, he just sat there with his eyes wide open and his face bright red. After a few seconds of processing, Sock put his arms around Jonathan.

“You're welcome, Jon.”

The two shared the embrace for a minute or so, neither one wanting to let go. Sock ran a hand through Jonathan’s messy hair, fluffing it up and curling it between his fingers. Jonathan pulled away first, taking his brand new headphones off his ears and leaving them around his neck. Before he stood up, he placed a small kiss on Sock’s cheek. He stood up, once again offering his hand.

“Come on, let’s go.”

Sock couldn't help but tenderly touch the spot on his cheek. He was surprised, but it wasn’t a bad surprise. For the first time in a long time he felt...happy. Legitimately happy. He could tell Jonathan was too, under the blushing face and averting eyes. Smiling wide enough to show teeth, he took Jonathan’s hand and stood up. With their fingers entwined, they walked out of the room and towards Jonathan’s living room.
