Chapter Text
The sound of bone scraping on bone is not unlike running fingernails over holographic pictures.
I wince when my thumb accidently brushes my wrist when pulling the black glove on. I shake myself, sighing when I notice a pale golden feather float into the boots by the bed. I pull the other glove on before fishing it out. I tug the boots on and sit up, twirling the feather between my fingers.
What do I do with this? I stare at it, contemplating what he did with these. Did he just throw them away? Gift them? Sell them?
Uncertain, I placed the feather in a growing pile on the side table.
Standing up, I tuck the blue button up shirt into the...um, gray jeans? No, they're not jeans, though they do kinda look like jeans. They're way comfier though.
I shake my head. Whatever. I'm not questioning what his pants are made of. They're gray and do their job. That's all that matters.
I squeeze my sockets shut and take a deep breath, the air rattling my ribs and filling non existant lungs.
I can do this, I tell myself.
Striding to the door with more confidence than I feel, I grab the fluffy orange coat off the hook and throw it on. The door swings open with a little more force than intended and bangs the wall, causing me to wince.
A maid who was walking past pauses and makes eye contact.
I fight the instinct to hunch my shoulders, bony cheeks burning. I awkwardly wave and try to smile at her. I think it comes off as a grimace. Or looks like a cat baring it's teeth.
She must have decided to take pity on me, because she instead of questioning my odd behavior, she bows deeply and wishes me good morning.
I return the greeting, even mimicking her bow. This part seems to confuse her, but she doesn't comment. She turns around to continue going about her day.
I sigh. One awkward person interaction out of the way.
Lord knows how many more to get through.
