Sanji squawked in alarm. “Like he was cast out or like he chose to fall?”
“Like a demon grabbed me and tore me from my kingdom,” Luffy cut in, tone sharp. Zoro placed a hand on his back and Luffy slumped further, fight draining.
“How soon do you need to get back up there?” Zoro asked because there had to be a limit. Gods couldn’t walk amongst men forever.

Zoro would be the first to say that being Nika’s so called mouthpiece was anti-climatic. The god himself was so carefree that he didn’t have any rituals to follow, no festivals, no sacrifices outside of Summer Solstice offerings and even those were simply objects like pinwheels or slices of meat. He didn’t require worshipping or statues made in his honour. To be honest, Zoro doubted Nika even touched down any day other than Summer Solstice. Those were the only days Zoro’s presence was required at the temple. And there he’d regale tales of their meagre lives will Luffy clapped along, bouncing from foot to foot before sharing stories of his own.Perhaps that was why Zoro was taken off guard when, one day upon collecting fruit from the orchards, he dropped to the ground as blinding pain rocketed through every part of his body. His knees hit the earth with a grunt, gagging.
“What the hell?” came the demand from his - he supposed - friend, Sanji, the blond dropping down beside him. “You step on something?”
-
Naturally, she spotted Luffy first and before he could even warn her,“What is that? Something that pitiful isn’t allowed in here.”
His knife was yanked from his belt and Zoro was signing his death warrant but he snapped forward, ensnaring Luffy. He swallowed thickly as the god glared at him, black eyes absolutely burning. “Zoro, release me.”
He didn’t have a choice, not really but even as he let go he tried; just with his voice rather than his hands. “Nika, please. She didn’t-”
Salvation came in the form of Sanji, who grasped the situation instantly and shoved Nami to the floor, gentlemanly side put aside for once. And yeah, Nika had that kind of ability.
“Forgive us,” he said quickly, bowing as well. “We weren’t aware of who our eyes were laid upon. We were unfamiliar with your human form.”
There was a tense moment of silence. Then, thankfully, Luffy laughed. Threw his head back and laughed, even if he had to lean back against Zoro as he did so. “Are they your friends Zoro? They’re so stuck up!”
-cautiously nodded. “They respect you.”
Luffy rolled his eyes. “You respect me. But you’re not so stuck up.” He then clucked his tongue. “Or maybe you’re just afraid of me.” His grin widened. “Is that it, Zoro?”
Was there a correct response to that? He didn’t know and so stayed silent.
-
Luffy snorted. “I’m without the sun. Now I’m a god of nothing. I’m human.”That was a very ominous statement.
-
“Oi, Sanji’s got you food. Think you can eat?”That drew a reaction, however mild, and Zoro was quick to pass the meal over. Luffy devoured it within seconds.
-
Nika rubbed at the scar on his chest mulishly. “You remember, my brother was killed?” Zoro nodded. “He wants to make the collection complete. Sabo lost an eye during our last encounter and this time…His name is Teach.”Sanji’s eyes widened. “The demon of darkness.”
Luffy ran an appraising eye over him. “You know a lot about us. We try to keep that name buried.”
Sanji looked like he didn’t know whether to be proud or terrified, Zoro stepping in. “He just prefers to shove his nose in a book. He’s no fun.”
Luffy cackled. “No, I guess not. Reading is boring.” He tried to get to his feet only to wobble and drop again, Zoro lunging for him. Luffy groaned. “Death could be faster.”
-
“You looking for something in particular?” Zoro asked.Nami raised an eyebrow. “A clue as to how to reverse this.”
Luffy was unimpressed, brow pinching in such a way that suggested that he’d already thought of that and if he couldn’t come up with something, how could tiny humans?
-
“Nika?” he demanded. He got a weak smile. “It’s okay Zoro. I’m reckless; I knew this was coming.”
That wasn’t okay, wasn’t okay in any way, Zoro adjusting his grip and that’s when he saw it. Such a tiny detail, barely visible in the dark but it was there. His veins. They still burnt gold.
He yanked Nika up, jabbing at his arm to get his attention. “I still have your power. Can you take it back?”
Nika blinked before the words caught up. He then snapped up, eagerly grabbing Zoro’s face and he didn’t have time to tell Sanji to get lost before Nika was slamming their lips together. It wasn’t like last time; it wasn’t burning and brilliant and all encompassing. It was cold and unnatural but it built. It built and built until that warmth started to return. Never burning, never unbearable, but enough to invoke a feeling of hope.
-
Light. Sunlight. Slowly but surely spreading more and more. Luffy cheered once more and claxons rang throughout the air of their own accord. One blink later and Luffy was shining gold again, presence expanding and shifting until he was flitting back to Zoro’s side with a sharp crack.
