Work Text:
It was like he was wagging his tail at them. His idol, the Rei Sakuma. He had never seen anyone as cool, as wonderful and amazing as they were. They were everything he aspired to be, the person he’d follow for the rest of his life if they’d let him. And if they had also been Koga’s first love? Well, that was nobody’s business but his.
And suddenly, that guitar of theirs was in his hands. Here he was, singing with Rei Sakuma , the coolest person to ever exist. He saw it in that glasses bastard’s eyes, too; Koga wasn’t the only one who knew of Rei’s greatness. He’d be the only one with their guitar though, kept carefully polished and tuned in the corner of his room.
Then Rei changed. Who was this person!? Koga’s savior was gone, replaced with someone who acted like everyone else’s grandmother. Or mother in the case of those Aoi twins. Even though Koga had made their new unit, the one Rei had willingly agreed to join, it was like he didn’t even know them at all. As if the last year had never happened. And this “Doggie” nickname, it felt different, especially with that damn Hakaze picking it up too. Koga had never felt so abandoned, so alone. It wasn’t his fault he was so harsh to Rei. This wasn’t the person that had saved him not so long ago, just some shell wearing the same face.
What did it matter that they had started to cling on him and cry like a pathetic old lady? What did it matter that he let them, that he helped carry them around when they couldn’t muster up the energy to carry themself? And if Koga had walked in on them crying once or twice, it didn’t matter that he never said anything about it. It didn’t matter if he hugged them or simply sat there, not leaving even when they had fallen asleep from the exhaustion. None of it mattered at all.
Things changed from there. If people had thought they were inseparable before, now they were permanently attached at the hip. Neither Rei nor Koga was seen without the other for long, and both seemed to never be themselves when separated. Doggie went to Koga, and vampire bastard had gone to Sakuma-senpai. How it happened, nobody knew. None of them saw the moments between classes or before lives. Maybe Adonis and Hakaze had seen a few, but not enough to understand. Koga knew Ritsu was sick and tired of them, though. She had woken up too many times seeing them asleep on each other on the Sakuma’s couch, legs tangled up with Rei curled up on Koga’s chest. He’d been rudely awoken by a pillow in his face too many times to count.
Graduation came and went. Surprisingly, it was rather uneventful for UNDEAD. They moved into their dorms, and that was that. If Tenshouin found Koga (more than a few times) curled up with Rei, then he didn’t say a word. If Rei stayed in Koga’s dorm, Leon would lick them awake, happy to give them the same good morning he gave Koga. Since when had Rei become such a big part of his life, anyway? It didn’t matter anyway , he thought to himself. Rei was Koga’s, and Koga was Rei’s. That was all that mattered.
Hakaze-senpai commented on how they acted like a married couple. When were they going to start dating already? They were insufferable as it was already. Rei had simply chuckled, that little laugh they always did that drove Koga crazy, while Koga spat and sputtered, face redder than Rei’s tomato juice. They had all laughed at him then, but Rei had only winked. What did that even mean!?
He found out a few days later, when they were walking Leon at his favorite park. Rei had cooed over Leon and commented on how he really did seem to like having two mothers. Who was another mother now? Koga just stared at them in slight disbelief until Rei just laughed and kissed him. Their lips were stupidly soft, but Koga had known that. He had stared at them too long not to know.
They started dating after that. No one was surprised, only raising eyebrows because of how long it had taken them. Even Adonis teased them a bit. Outside of classes, they were never apart, not even sleeping alone. Most of the time, they stayed in Koga’s dorm, Kazehaya not minding the extra person and Leon always excited to see his second mother.
Koga and Adonis quickly graduated after that, with UNDEAD gaining popularity with their reunion. And if Koga saw Adonis falling asleep on Kaoru’s shoulder (Kaoru had insisted they use her first name from now on) during their meals together, neither Koga nor Rei said a word.
A few years passed, and UNDEAD was at the height of their popularity. Fans poured over images from their lives, begging to know when Koga and Rei had gotten matching rings. They never said a word about it or their meanings though, only laughing with their fingers intertwined when asked. It was something just for them, they said, something important for them.
Koga often fell asleep in Rei’s arms, murmuring to himself about how lovely Rei was and how lucky he is. Rei only smiled at him, kissing the top of his head. Their sweet Koga. if only he knew how much he meant to them. They had never found the words to say it, but Rei never wished to be without him. If only Koga knew that in the same way he spoke of Rei saving him, he had saved Rei. if he knew, he would never say. And Rei, well, they only wanted Koga to know that he was everything to them, now and forever.
