Hailey heard a familiar grumble from under the bed, and she rolled her eyes.
“I can’t sneak snacks in every night,” she explained again, for the tenth time. “Mom will notice. And then you’ll have no snacks. Is that what you want?”
She heard a plaintive warble of apology, and she smiled. She listened to the sounds of the house. “I think they’re asleep. Come on!”
There was a shuffling noise, and then Fluffy crawled out from under her bed. He smiled at her, his long fangs glistening in the glow from her nightlight. Then he stretched, his long, furry purple arms nearly touching the ceiling. Hailey felt bad he was crammed under her bed all day, but he insisted he didn’t mind.
Fluffy climbed on the bed, being careful to make sure his sharp claws didn’t rip the blankets. She’d had a hard time explaining that one to her mom.
She gave him scritches on top of his head, and then Fluffy curled up on the pillow she left on the foot of the bed for him with a contented sigh. Hailey laid down and closed her eyes, knowing she’d always be safe as long as Fluffy was around.
