“Look, ever since I saw you walk in on that stupid English literature class I knew I was done for. You’re like everything that completes me. We like the same things, we read the same books. We even annotate on books for each other for fuck’s sake!” Regulus said exasperated
Remus couldn’t believe what he was listening to. Fucking Regulus Black has a crush on him, and he reciprocates.
“Reg. I feel the same for you, I like everything
about you.The way you scrunch your nose when you're focused on something and the way you get stressed over silly things. It’s always been you, Regulus” There. It was done. No turning back now.
They look into each other’s eyes. They’re sharing a moment like there’s no one else on the campus. This bubble can’t be broken. Remus takes a step closer to Regulus, the height difference is clear.
“What are you doing?” Regulus whispers
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m going to kiss you.”
So Remus does as said. It was like magic, every fiber of their body was being filled with so much love.They kept kissing until there was no air on their lungs, when they got appart there was a smile on their faces. The brightest smiles ever, they couldn’t stop looking at each other.
Remus pecked Regulus’ lips and said “Why don’t we go to your favorite coffee shop to celebrate?”
“The one with the separate area to play with the cats?”
“Yes, love. That one.”
Holding hands they started making their way to the café. Remus was so excited but he didn’t know where they stood now. Of course they liked each other and kissed a lot of times just minutes ago, but what if Regulus didn’t want to commit? What if he didn’t want to settle down? Remus knew he was ready but what about Regulus?
Regulus sensed Remus’ stiffness. He knew the other one was overthinking and he knew why. “Remus.”
“Oh my God. You’re not ready to settle down, I knew it! You like me but you don’t want a relationship and”
“Remus.”
Remus looked at him “What?”
“Will you stop with this nonsense? Or I will start thinking you’re the one who doesn’t want a relationship. Listen, I took all the courage I had to tell you how I feel about you. Isn’t this proof enough that I want a life with you? I want you in all of the little and big moments, Remus. You’re my everything, my light and my joy.”
“Oh. I’m sorry. I was overthinking and I started panicking, I really like you and I don’t want to mess up” He gave a forehead kiss on Regulus
“It’s okay. Shall we go? I don’t want to let Mr. Whiskers waiting.”
Walking beside Regulus was like listening to Pentatonix sing live. It was majestic. Their hands completed themselves perfectly. To Remus, Regulus was like the sun, even with all his flaws, he was still shining for him.
At the café Regulus went to grab a table while Remus was going to order “Hello! How can I help you?”
“I would like to have a black coffee with a chocolate croissant and a hot chocolate with a piece of chocolate cake, please.”
“Alright, that will be $15,99”
Remus pays and makes his way to where his lover was, he still can’t wrap his head on the fact that Regulus is finally his.
“I still can’t believe it, I mean how could I get so lucky?” Remus said with adoration in his eyes
“You’re the lucky one? I got the boy I wanted”
“So you just wanted me for my looks? How dare you! You should be ashamed” Remus said with a sarcastic tone
They stared at each other for what felt like hours but was just seconds and started laughing. That’s what this was all about, they are filled with joy. Nothing will stop them. Being together, for them, was always like this. Stolen glances, shy smiles and every excuse to touch each other.
The food arrived and they started eating. The black coffee and chocolate croissant were obviously for Regulus, and the hot chocolate and the chocolate cake were for Remus. Whoever saw them interacting would know that they’re in love. It was not secret, there wasn’t a reason for it.
“When are you telling my brother?” Regulus asked rapidly
“I think I’ll tell him today. I don’t want to keep us a secret, I want to be able to show off my boyfriend”
“Do you think he’ll be alright with it? I mean, you’re his best friend and I’m his brother. Isn’t it a bit weird?”
“Only if you make it weird” Remus said with a smile forming on his face
“I think he has a crush on you” He said while shifting uncomfortable on his seat
“What? That’s literally impossible, Sirius doesn’t have a crush on me” Remus was getting agitated
“You may think he doesn’t but to me was very clear”
“He’s just like that, you know it. Anyway, he’s not the one who has my heart”
The conversation stopped and they finished their meals. The evening was good, they played with the cats. Remus promised himself to come back in future to adopt one of them, he could see himself living a life with Regulus. He could see their little apartment with a room for their books and their grumpy cat. He wanted that. He wanted Regulus with him for as long as life would allow.
They parted ways on the hall that divided the dorms. Regulus gave Remus two kisses, one meant see you later and the other meant good luck. He was going to need all the luck he has stored, because if what Regulus had told him is true. He’s screwed.
Remus made his way to the dorm he shared with Sirius, the whole way he was rehearsing what he was going to say. Putting the key on the door was difficult, his hands were shaky and he was sweating.
Finally inside the dorm and Sirius was nowhere to be found. He’s probably showering so Remus will wait. He has to say now or he will just push it back and everything would go wrong.
Sirius arrives 20 minutes later and turns out he was at James’ dorm, he looked really nervous and anxious. Maybe something happened to James or Peter or even to Lily.
“Remus! Thank God you’re here. I need to tell you something” he said trying to calm down
“Is everything okay? Did something happen?”
“Everything is fine. I just..” he paused and took a deep breath before continuing “I just need to get this out of my chest”
“Okay, we can do that. You tell me your news and I tell you mine, alright?”
“Alright.”
“Good.”
“So. You make me live, whatever this world can give to me. It’s you. You’re all I see.”
“Sirius..”
“You’re my sunshine. And I want you to know that my feelings are true. Remus, nothing that I do can’t change how I feel about you. I love you. I love you, Remus John Lupin. You make me live.”
“Sirius. I really love you but you’re my best friend. You also make me live. But not the way you want, I do love you. It's just that you’re my best friend. I’m so sorry”
Both of them have tears in their eyes but for different reasons. Sirius is heartbroken. Remus is disappointed with himself for never noticing the way Sirius feels about him. It’s true, Remus did love Sirius. Just not the way he expected and it’s not his fault.
Sirius wiped his tears off and tried to put on his best smile for Remus, who could never be his. He tried to stop crying, he was using all his forces and praying for every known god for help.
“This is weird” a hiccup escaped Sirius’ mouth
“I’m so sorry, Sirius. I never wanted to hurt you like this.”
“It’s okay, Remus. You don’t choose who you love, I understand that. I just didn’t think it would hurt this bad. I’m sorry, forget about me. What is your news?”
“Sirius.”
“I’m fine, Remus. Please just tell me your news so we can move on from this awkward situation”
“I don’t want to hurt you”
“You already did. Now please. The news.”
“Your brother and I. We are dating. It happened this morning, I’m so incredibly sorry, Sirius”
The look on Sirius’ face was from hurt and betrayal, of course he knew this could happen. All their study dates and late night drinks. Who was he trying to fool when he let these feelings grow, he should’ve known better.
“Okay.” he said nodding his head and making his way out of the dorm
Remus didn’t go after him, he couldn’t. What was he supposed to say? It happened. There was nothing there to be said or done. Maybe someday Sirius will forgive him and they’ll be friends again.
