Summary:

Another story with the Soulmate AU where instead of having the first thing they say tattooed on each other, they have a random sentence that the person will say around them - and that sentence will be said a year from the day it shows up. The tattoo stings and fades away when the sentence is said to confirm that it isn't a coincidence.
~~~
After their soulmate marks bring them together in a close family, Hinata Shoyo and Kageyama Tobio are truly happy together.
That is until Tobio falls ill and Shoyo must learn what this means for the family he had built upon through the years.
Chapter 1: One
Chapter Text
"Tobio?" Shoyo's voice was soft as he spoke. He pulled the sleeves of his gray hoodie over his hands as he slumped against Tobio's chest. Tobio moved his hands to fit around Shoyo's waist, resting his chin on top of Shoyo's bright hair.
"Hmm?" He hummed into Shoyo's orange locks, breathing in the scent of fresh shampoo.
Shoyo entwined his fingers with Tobio's. "Can we start a family?"
Tobio's mouth fell agape as Shoyo turned his head to face him. "I-, What?"
"I want to start a family with you," Shoyo changed his wording this time. Tobio closed his mouth and swallowed hard.
Where was this sudden request coming from?
"Sho', where is this coming from?"
"What do you mean?" Shoyo pouted. "I've mentioned it to you before."
Tobio briefly took a second to remember the time Shoyo had brought up possibly starting a family, soon after they got engaged. But that was almost a year ago. He toyed with the silver wedding band on his finger before shifting his gaze to meet Shoyo's persistent amber eyes.
Tobio ran a hand through his dark black hair. "I mean, do you really want to?" He was skeptical as he spoke. He didn't want to step into something before researching and learning the facts.
Shoyo smiled, giddy at the thought of a family. "Of course! God, I want nothing more than to start a family with you, Tobio."
Tobio felt a small blush creep up on his cheeks as he surveyed the thought of starting a family with his husband.
Maybe it was something he wanted?
The thought of settling down for a little while and starting a family was a foreign one to Tobio, but the more the thought crossed his mind, the better it seemed.
He took a long deep breath. "I'd love to start a family with you," Tobio's heart fluttered with the way the word "family" rolled off his tongue. This would be the next step in his relationship with Shoyo, and he wanted to be as prepared as possible for the world ahead of them. "We can start researching how something like that would work because honestly, I have no idea."
Shoyo chuckled at Tobio's comment. The ginger pushed himself forward to place a soft kiss against Tobio's lips. "All part of the journey."
~~~

Haruaki Kageyama was absolutely perfect in the eyes of Tobio and Shoyo.

The two stood hand in hand, leaning down to view the small carrier that housed their newborn. They watched as the infant stirred inside its temporary resting spot, eyes widening in awe at their child.

Tobio moved to place an arm around Shoyo's shoulders, pulling the ginger closer to place a kiss against his bright hair. Shoyo took his hand and hovered it over the hand of the newborn, waiting until the infant slowly began to wrap its small hand around Shoyo's finger. Shoyo let out a small laugh at the gesture from the child beside him, leaning into Tobio's embrace.

"He's perfect," Tobio whispered in Shoyo's ear. Tears pricked at his eyes as he kept his gaze on the infant in front of him.

The child truly was perfect. It was theirs. They had a family. Everything about that was perfect.

Shoyo nodded at Tobio's words. "He's got your eyes," Shoyo breathed, watching as the baby slowly opened its eyes. Tobio used the heel of his hand to wipe a tear off of his face.

Slowly, Shoyo moved his arms to pick up the baby, swaddled in blue. He carefully placed his arms to support the correct parts of the body, remembering exactly how the doctor had instructed. He turned towards Tobio, keeping the child close to his chest. Shoyo bowed to kiss the baby's forehead before looking up at Tobio.

"Do you want to hold him?"

Fear seized in Tobio's stomach. Was he ready for this?

Shoyo reached one hand out and gripped Tobio's forearm.

"Babe, I can feel you overthinking," Shoyo smiled, his second arm returning to the baby. "You'll be fine."

Tobio nodded, doing his best to trust Shoyo's words as Shoyo began to slowly hand him the baby. Shoyo helped Tobio place his hands as he moved to put an arm around Tobio's waist.

The moment the baby was in Tobio's arms, his heart soared at the sight of the small bundle against his chest. He watched as the child stirred for a moment before relaxing against Tobio's touch once more. Smiling, Tobio turned his head to face Shoyo's grinning lips and eyes glistening with tears.

Shoyo stood on his toes and kissed Tobio's cheek before the two turned their gaze back to the child.

The door of the room creaked behind them. The bunch quickly turned around, the child still tucked snugly in Tobio's arms.

"Congrats!" The door creaked open to reveal a young woman being wheeled in by a man behind her.

The smile never left Shoyo's face as he spoke."Kobayashi-San! How are you feeling?" Shoyo took a step closer to the brunette in the wheelchair. As this young woman had been their surrogate for the past nine months, both Shoyo and Tobio had become good friends with her and her spouse.

The brunette smiled. "Pretty good, thanks."

Shoyo nodded. "I know we've said it before, but we couldn't be more grateful for all you've done for us these past months. None of this would have been possible without you." He glanced back in the direction of the baby.

"And I'm so glad everything worked out the way it did. It makes me so happy that I could make this possible for you." The woman's warm brown eyes sparkled as her husband rubbed her shoulder. "You all are going to make the perfect family."

Another smile crept up on Tobio's face as he digested the thought more than he had these past nine months.

And now, instead of the original fear, everything about the idea of his growing family began to excite Tobio. He slipped one hand out from under the baby and slid it around Shoyo's shoulder, pulling his husband close.

This was another step in their journey, and Tobio could tell that Shoyo was just as excited as he was.
