Work Text:
“Oh look, I am interrupting book club again it seems.” Eddie says as he rounds the corner from the gym area where he had been working out for the hour. They were in between calls and his friends were all at the table each had a book in their hand
“Studying-“ Chimney points to Hen, “Happiness-“ he points to Buck, “and parenting.” He raises his own book.
“Bobby will be so jealous.” He rolls his eyes and quickly snaps a picture of the trio reading before sending it off to the Firefam group chat to show Bobby.
He responds right away with some random emojis (Bobby isn’t the greatest when it comes to texting) and a “miss you all.”
“You should ask how Athena’s dad-“ before Buck could finish his sentence Bobby had sent them a text to let them know the surgery went well and it was a waiting game.
“That’s great news” Hen beams before switching to flash cards. Eddie slides in the seat next to Buck, picking up the book (another one about happiness he notices) and starts to aimlessly read it.
It’s Buck that breaks the silence 10 minutes later by slamming his book, making everyone jump. “Eddie, If you were only getting discharged from the Army now, do you think you would become a firefighter?”
Eddie leans back in his seat. Would he? He would like to think so but he wasn’t sure. Would Shannon still be alive? Would he have a relationship with Chris like he did now? “I’m not sure, I guess so? being a firefighter makes me happy. Why is this coming up Buck?”
“That wellness centre call- I love being a firefighter but am I living to my full potential? I work, do meetings at Chris’ school, hang out with friends but at the end of the day I go home to an empty apartment. I need something to fill the void. I need-“
“A couch?” Chimney asks which makes him and Hen snicker.
“To find what makes me happy.” Buck rolls his eyes at Chimney’s comment.
“You’ll find it Buck”
Just then the bell rings causing everything to shift as they went to the scene.
Eddie couldn’t help thinking though-
Is he leaving up to his full potential?
