   Summary

   While it might seem like Katsuki doesn’t pay attention to anything but himself, he’s actually extremely attentive to his surroundings. Just because he didn’t comment doesn’t mean he didn’t see, doesn’t mean he didn’t hear.

   And while he observes and listens, he notices.

   Katsuki heard Deku always respond to jeers towards his heroic dreams in defensive, frantic rambles; heard Deku always subconsicously mumble under his breath when his brain had too many thoughts; heard the scribbles of Deku’s pencil as he wrote in that stupid notebook all class.

   For as long as Katsuki can remember, he could always hear Deku’s background noise. There was always something he was doing that seemed to announce that he was in the room, and Katsuki hated it.

   But now, he notices, it’s quiet. Katsuki thinks he hates that more.

   Alternatively; Katsuki has always heard Deku making some kind of noise, mumbling, writing, tapping, etc, until he doesn’t.
