All I Want for Christmas is You

Summary:

[“I miss you.” Anne’s thumb hovered over the send button, anxiety and grief swimming through her mind. The last time they’d called or talked was more than a month ago. Not a day went by where Anne didn’t miss Marcy, but today was one of those days where she just couldn’t stop thinking about them, longing to be by their side, and nothing was working to distract her from the feeling.

She sighed, deleting the text and shutting her phone off as she stared up at the ceiling. Domino was next to her, but somehow Anne still felt lonely. She shut her eyes, memories of the two of them replaying and replaying over and over again through her head.]

Okay, this *might* be a bit cheesy, but I just wanted to write a cozy Marcanne Christmas fanfic because Christmas is coming up soon, yay!

This is a very self-indulgent fic haha

Chapter 1: I'll be Home for Christmas

Chapter Text

(December 17th, 8 days until Christmas)

Christmas was coming up soon, and Sasha decided to do a bit of shopping, because why not? She groaned internally as the mall had all of the awful overplayed Christmas songs on. As she was turning a corner, someone crashed into her, spilling hot cocoa all over both of them.

“Hey, watch where-” Sasha began, but paused as familiar brown eyes met her cerulean blue ones. “Anne?” She let out softly as she realized her eyes were a bit red and puffy.

“Oh my gosh, Sasha, I’m so so sorry,” Anne started rambling, “I guess I wasn’t paying much attention to where I was going, and-”

“It’s okay.” Sasha took her hand, leading them to the nearby restrooms. “Let’s get some paper towels to clean this mess up.” She gave her a warm smile, looking back at her, still concerned. “Are you okay though?”

“Oh uh, I’m- I’m okay.” Anne tried to reassure her, giving a slightly pained smile, but Sasha’s smile fell as she knew Anne was lying. Seeing this, Anne sighed. “Okay, I’m- I’m just missing Marcy, and the Plantars.” She admitted.

“Oh.” That made sense. They both paused in their walking.

“I guess-” Anne started again, “I guess this time of the year is just hard for me. All these memories of the three of us watching cheesy Hallmark movies, drinking hot chocolate, and decorating and doing Christmas related stuff together.” She smiled as she reminisced. “And that one year where I got to spend Christmas with the Plantars.. I wish it didn’t have to end, but I’m glad that I got to spend at least one Christmas with them.”

Sasha smiled sadly. This time of year must have been hard on Anne, no doubt. She had an idea. “Well, if you want to, I’m not really busy during winter break, so we could maybe hang out and do Christmas-y stuff? If you want.”

Anne started laughing all of a sudden, which made Sasha panic. “I- did I say something wrong? Is it a silly idea?” They hadn’t exactly talked in a while anyways, so maybe Anne thought she was joking..

“No, no,” Anne said in-between giggles. “I’d love to, it’s just-” She snorted. “I’ve never heard you say the word ‘Christmas-y’ before!”

Sasha blinked. “I- Shut up!” She teased, but it only lasted for a second before she started laughing too.

Anne looked back at the spilled hot chocolate on the floor. “We should probably clean that up..”

“Yeah, we should.” Sasha smiled. It was nice to see each other again.

(Later that night)

“I miss you.” Marcy gulped, feeling guilty for missing Anne. It’d been over three years now since they’d gotten themself, Anne, and Sasha stranded in Amphibia, and they still felt guilty for missing Anne. They missed Sasha, too, truthfully, but.. it was different with Anne. More of a longing feeling, mixed with guilt.

They were about to delete the message when a text popped up from Sasha. Curious, they opened it, smiling. They hadn’t really talked to Sasha recently, either, but it was a bit easier to tell her the truth, somehow.

Sashy: hey marce :) hru?

Mar-Mar: Sashaaaa! :D I’m.. ok. What abt u?

Sashy: awh.. i’m pretty good. u need to come visit me and anneeeee

Mar-Mar: I knoww :( I want to

Sashy: ur on winter break soon 2 right? I have a epic plan

Mar-Mar: Yess.. what’s ur plan Waybright

Sashy: one sec

Marcy patiently waited, when they got a call from Sasha. Excited, they picked up, happy to see her face again.

“Okay so,” Sasha’s voice grew to a whisper like she was about to spill a secret. “Don’t tell Anne this, but she’s reallyyyyy missing you right now.”

Marcy frowned. “I miss her too..” They admitted. “A lot..”

Sasha gave a sympathetic look to them. “Well I miss you, too, but Anne’s just.. really sad. I ran into her today and she looked like she’d been crying.”

“Oh..” Marcy felt like their heart was about to break. They couldn’t stand to see Anne sad, because it made them sad. All they wanted to do was run up to her and give her the biggest hug in the world, but they couldn’t do that. Not from a couple thousand miles away.

“So, what I was thinking..” Sasha began again, only interrupting herself and smirking. “You still have a crush on her, right?”

Well that caught Marcy off-guard. They stuttered, their face turning red. “I- um- When did I tell you that?” They had no memory of telling Sasha that they DID have a crush on Anne? Well, of course they had a crush on Anne, who wouldn’t? She’s the most sweetest, kind, and beautiful person Marcy knew, and-

“HA! I knew it!” Sasha teased. “I mean, it was always pretty obvious, Mar-Mar.”

Marcy sighed. “Yeah, but, I can’t do anything about it when we’re so far away from each other, Sash.” Sure, they could tell her, but she probably didn’t feel the same way about them! At least, not anymore.

“Uh huh, suree,” Sasha smiled mischievously.

Oh no. “Sasha-”

“What? I just had an idea..”

Marcy hummed in curiosity and raised an eyebrow. “What’re you planning?”

“Glad you asked.” Sasha explained her idea, and together they both excitedly formed a plan, promising to update each other tomorrow. When they finally said goodnight, Marcy couldn’t sleep. It was late now, but they were way too excited. Eventually, however, they grew too tired to stay awake and drifted off, smiling.

(December 18th, 7 days until Christmas)

When Anne walked down the stairs into the kitchen the next morning, she heard her parents talking on the phone excitedly. What really grabbed her attention was what she heard her mom say when she was in earshot.

“Oh, Anne’s going to be so excited!”

“What am I gonna be excited about?” Anne leaned against the doorway. Her parents turned and exchanged startled and secretive looks.

“Alright, we have to go now. Have a good day, see you soon!” Mrs. Boonchuy hung up the phone and smiled, getting back to cooking breakfast.

Anne raised an eyebrow, now very suspicious.

- - - - - -

A little while later, Anne sits down at the kitchen table eating breakfast and scrolling through her phone boredly. She gets a notification telling her that someone posted a new cute cat video, and that makes her happy instantly. Halfway through it, she nearly falls out of her chair when she sees a new text from Marcy.

Mar-mar: Hiya AnnaBanana ^^

AnnaBanana: Hey MarMar! How’re you doing :D

Mar-Mar: I’m great, ty for asking :)

Mar-Mar: What abt you?

AnnaBanana: I’m doing alright

AnnaBanana: Look at this adorable cat meme

AnnaBanana: [Attachment: CatMeme]

Mar-Mar: Oh my frog that’s SO CUTE!!!!!

AnnaBanana: ikr

Anne sighed. It was nice to hear from Marcy again, but it still didn’t feel like how it used to be. Maybe it wouldn’t ever be like how it used to, but hey, at least they were talking, right? She still couldn’t help feeling like something was missing. Well, someone was missing. They’d sworn distance wouldn’t change anything between them, but it had to.

Mar-Mar: Sooo whatcha doing for Christmas/winter break?

Now that she thought of it, what was she going to do for winter break, or Christmas, for that matter? She hadn’t really thought of it, since she’d been so distracted recently.

AnnaBanana: Hmm I’m not sure, probs just gonna chill and hang out with family and Sasha.

AnnaBanana: Do you have any plans?

Mar-Mar: Ooh that sounds fun

Mar-Mar: MaYbEeEe

AnnaBanana: Ur being rlly mysterious hmmm

Mar-Mar: [Attachment: Meme-Villager-Noises-Hmm]

AnnaBanana: PFFT what is that

Mar-Mar: A villager from minecraft :D

AnnaBanana: Haha

Mar-Mar: hehehe

- - - - - -

To say that Marcy was excited was an understatement. They were practically bouncing off the walls and flapping uncontrollably, they couldn’t WAIT. But alas, they had to.

All that aside, they finally texted Anne! Well, not the whole “I miss you” text they’d initially wanted to send her last night, but they were getting somewhere at least! It was nice to talk to Anne again, too. They REALLY wanted to tell her their and Sasha’s plan, but they promised Sasha that they wouldn’t. Plus, it would be more exciting when she found out later.

Now all they had to do was finish midterms and wait for winter break to start. And wait some more, which was too bad, because they hated waiting. But it’ll all be worth it.

Crap. They just remembered that they still had a bit of studying to do before midterms started tomorrow. Welp, they could think about Anne all they wanted to later, and (hopefully) they could actually focus on studying.

(December 22nd, 3 days until Christmas)

Just getting back home from school, Anne plopped down on the couch after setting her backpack down, exhausted from midterms. She was glad that it was finally over. That also meant that winter break officially started tomorrow, yay! No school for over two weeks!

That also meant she could talk to Marcy more, too..

She smiled at that thought, grabbing her phone and shooting Marcy a text.

AnnaBanana: Have you finished midterms yet?

Almost instantly, she gets a reply.

Mar-Mar: Yup! Just finished a while ago, finally lol. U?

AnnaBanana: yes I just got home, and finally is right >~<

AnnaBanana: But now there’s only three days left until Christmas aaahhh

Mar-Mar: OH RIGHT :OOOOO

Mar-Mar: THREE MORE DAYS!!!1!1!!11

AnnaBanana: You seem excited, lol :)

Oh how she missed seeing Marcy get excited. They’d call every now and then, but it still wasn’t the same as seeing her ramble on and on and get those starry eyes about something she wanted to talk about. And sometimes, Marcy would come and visit, or vise-versa, and she’d get to see them in person. That was truly magical, something she longed for often.

Mar-Mar: I am excited, AnnaBanana! Aren’t you?

AnnaBanana: Mhm! Time flies so quickly tho I feel like I’m not ready

Mar-Mar: Well I have a feeling it’s gonna be a great day >:)

AnnaBanana: Hmmmm ur hiding something aren’t u

Mar-Mar: whaaaat? Me? Pffsh. neverrr annabanana

AnnaBanana: whatever you say… 🤨

Anne could already tell this was going to be a good winter break. Maybe they’d talk to each other a lot, that would be amazing. She tilted her head in thought, and wondered if she should ask Marcy if they were up to calling. She loved texting them, but she still loved to hear their voice even more.

AnnaBanana: Hey, only if you’re up to it, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to facetime?..

Mar-Mar: Of course!! :D

Anne couldn’t help but smile, her heartbeat racing as she pressed the call button. Sure enough, Marcy quickly joined, smiling ear to ear when they saw her, and Anne did the same.

“Hi MarMar!” Anne couldn’t keep the excitement out of her voice as she gave them a small wave.

“Hey Annie!” Marcy gave a wave of their own as they readjusted their position on their bed.

For a moment, a comfortable silence fell over the two of them, and Anne was glad the phone couldn’t pick up how fast her heartbeat was currently racing.

“So,” Marcy broke the silence first. “Two days until Christmas.”

“Two days.” Anne repeated. “Oh, do you remember that time you, me, and Sasha made that gingerbread house that one year?”

She thought back to a certain winter break all those years ago before Amphibia, and how they had made a store-bought gingerbread house together, and then decided to try it, declaring it disgusting.

“Oh yeah!” Marcy crumpled their face in disgust. “Man, that was gross.”

Anne couldn’t help laughing. “It really was terrible.”

The two of them laughed, sneaking looks at each other's face when they thought the other wasn’t paying attention. It was amazing to be able to see each other’s smile again. And for a little bit of time, they forgot how far away from each other they actually were, giggling, smiling, and talking like they were little kids again, and no time had passed at all.

Too soon for their liking, though, Anne’s parents returned home from work, and Anne had to help out with making dinner.

“Bye, Marbles,” Anne gave a sad smile, not wanting to hang up. She felt like she could talk to them forever. “Love you.”

“I love you too, AnnaBanana,” Marcy gave her a little wave through the screen, “Talk to you later.”

“Talk to you later,” Anne repeated quietly before the other person hung up. She sat still there for a moment, heat rising in her cheeks. Those three little words they’d said to each other a million times before, supposedly meant platonically, had felt.. Different now, saying them, and Anne wasn’t quite sure why. She wanted to be around Marcy again, more than anything. Truthfully, she always had wanted to be, but it somehow started to feel different now, and Anne couldn’t get those three little words to leave her head, echoing over and over again.

I love you.

- - - - - -

Marcy sighed after hanging up the phone. Anne’s words echoed through their mind. Words that she definitely meant platonically. Mhm. Definitely. She could hear her whispering to them, and it wouldn’t stop, no matter how hard they tried to get their mind off of it, whether that was by playing Vagabondia Chronicles or drawing, they. Wouldn’t. Leave.

“Love you.

And maybe it was selfish, to want Anne to not mean it platonically. Marcy surely didn’t mean it platonically, but Anne would never know that.

They sighed again, repeating themself.

“I love you too, AnnaBanana,” They closed their eyes shut before letting out a faint whisper, - Well more like a whimper, really. - “More than you’ll ever know.”

- - - - - -

(Christmas Eve)

Sasha awoke to the bright sunlight filtering through the blinds and groaned. She checked the time before her eyes widened, she hadn’t slept in this late in a long time. She hummed in thought. Perks of winter break, I guess.

She shot Anne a quick text before getting up and ready for the day.

Sashy: merry christmas eve :)

It wasn’t until she was all ready for the day and eating breakfast before Anne replied.

AnnaBanana: Merry Christmas Eve!

She snickered. Anne was always the last one awake. Classic Boonchuy. She decided to tease her a little bit.

Sashy: well good mmorning sleepyhead

AnnaBanana: Good mmorning to you too 🙂

Sashy: ;-;

Sashy: we’re still on for today, right?

AnnaBanana: Yeah! Give me like an hour and then I’ll be ready

Sashy: k

- - - - - -

Shortly after, Anne gets a text from Sasha saying she’s on her way over. The two of them had planned to do old Christmas traditions together for the day, and Anne was excited since they hadn’t hung out in awhile.

She quickly got dressed, wearing a festive oversized sweater and styling it with some bluejeans. She’d already had breakfast and her parents had already gone to Thai Go, the last day before taking Christmas off. She’d promised that she would help them over there later today after she and Sasha hung out, since it was probably going to be really busy because of the holidays.

Sasha got there a few minutes later, and Anne raced to the front door to greet her.

“Hey Sash!” She smiled.

Sasha stepped inside, shaking.

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah, yeah-” Sasha shook her arms around, trying to get warmer. “I’m fine, it’s just- Why is it so cold here?!”

Anne let out a small laugh. “Dude, we live in LA. It’s hardly cold here. There’s not even snow on the ground.”

“It’s still cold though! It was barely this cold in Amphibia.”

“Oh really?” Anne didn’t believe her. It actually snowed in Amphibia, and Anne was there to experience it.

“Yeah! Oh wait-” Sasha seemed to remember something. “Yeah, nevermind. It was cold there.”

Anne snorted. “Come on, I made hot chocolate, let’s go watch a Christmas movie.”

- - - - - -

They watched a Christmas movie, drank hot chocolate, and laughed together. It was still kind of weird watching movies without Marcy, who usually gives commentary on them throughout the whole time, but it was still wonderful to get to spend time with one of her childhood best friends. They’d have to hang out together more often.

Eventually Sasha had to leave and Anne had to go help her parents at Thai Go, but Anne couldn’t help but notice how Sasha seemed like she was hiding something from her. She’d asked if everything was alright and she said yes, but that still didn’t fully convince Anne.

Before she left for her family’s restaurant, she texted Marcy and wished them a merry Christmas eve. They wished her one, too, before she got there and started her shift.

“How was your time with Sasha today, Anne?” Her dad asked when they saw her walk inside the restaurant.

“It was actually really good!” Anne smiled as she took over the counter.

“Glad to hear that.” He replied, and her mom smiled back at her.

- - - - - -

It had been a good day so far, hanging out with Anne. Sasha knew that she was probablyyy suspicious that something was going on, but that was fine since there was a good chance that she wouldn’t be able to figure it out in time. She and Marcy had been texting each other updates often, and were getting really excited.

Sasha was getting ready for bed when she heard her phone chime from the other side of her room. Assuming it was Marcy texting her and freaking out, she walked over and plopped herself onto the bed, reading the text, which was, as she guessed, from Marcy, who was panicking.

Mar-Mar: SASHHHHHHAAAAAAA

Mar-Mar: Sorry if ur asleep already but CHRISTMAS IS TOMORROW.

Sashy: yup, that’s how time works

Mar-Mar: IT’S LITERALLY. TOMORROW,

Mar-Mar: HOW ARE U SO CHILL ABT THIS

Mar-Mar: I’M FREAKING OUT

Sashy: i can see that

Sashy: and im just . a chill person

Sashy: [Attachment: Chill-Meme-Thing]

Mar-Mar: Chill Sashy

Sashy: noo don’t call me that

Sashy: alr im gonna go to bed now, u should try and get some sleep as well marce

Mar-Mar: ..fine

Sashy: u better

Mar-Mar: G’night Sash

(Christmas day)

Anne groaned as she tried to wake up, pulling her blanket over her head and grabbing her phone to check the time, finding out that it wasn’t as late as she thought it was. A text appeared in the trio’s group chat, reading:

Sashy: heyy besties merry christmas

AnnaBanana: Merry Christmas! 🎄

Mar-Mar: ¡Feliz Navidad!

Sashy: marbles, why.

Mar-Mar: Gosh, I just wanted to wish you a merry Christmas in Spanish :(

AnnaBanana: I wanna wish you a merry Christmas from the bottom of my hearttttt

Mar-Mar: And you are the heart!

Sashy: wow

Sashy: you 2 are like. perfect for each other

AnnaBanana: Shush

Mar-Mar: Oh I have to go now

Mar-Mar: My parents are awake and wanted to spend time together this morning

AnnaBanana: Aw alright Marbles, bye!

Sashy: Cya later!

Mar-Mar: ¡Adios amigas!

- - - - - -

(Later in the afternoon)

Anne sat on the couch with her parents, petting Domino, who was comfortably lying on her lap. The Christmas special of one of their favorite shows ended, the credits starting to come on. Her mom got up, stretching as she started to pick up the mess from the wrappers of Christmas presents scattered around the living room.

“Oh, let me help you with that, mom,” Anne said as she, too, got up and started to help clean.

“Thank you, Anne.” Her mom smiled gratefully at her.

After they all finished cleaning up (well, besides Domino, who tried to chase and swat the leftover paper,) her dad retreated to go try and beat the new Christmas boss in one of his video games, and her mom relaxed back on the couch, reading a book.

Anne was about to play with Domino in her room, when the doorbell rang. That was odd, no one usually came by on Christmas day anymore.

“Anne, can you get the door please?” She heard her mom call to her from the living room.

“Sure!” Anne ran down the stairs in curiosity, opening the door to find- “Sasha?” Anne smiled in confusion. “What are you doing here?”

“Just came over to drop off your gift,” She stated plainly. Anne tilted her head, she wasn’t holding anything, and Anne didn’t even think to get her a gift, gosh darn it! She knew there was something she was forgetting to do.

Sasha stepped over to the side of the porch, revealing.. Nothing? Anne raised her eyebrow. Seeing her confusion, Sasha turned her head and sighed. “Ahem.” She cleared her throat, but nothing changed. She rolled her eyes and tried again, “AHEM.

“Oh!” A familiar voice perked up from around the corner and stepped in front of the stairs on the porch.

Seeing who this was, Anne’s eyes welled up and she gasped in both shock and excitement. “Mar-Marcy?!”

“Hi, Anne!” They bounced on their feet, just barely able to hold in their enthusiasm.

Anne ran up to them and put her arms around them, holding them close and almost knocking the both of them over. They giggled. “Surprise!”

“Oh my frog oh my frog oh my frog oh my frog! ” She cried, unable to hold the tears in. “When- how- Ah!!” She squealed.

“See? Told you she’d be surprised,” Sasha laughed, with Anne’s parents joining in, too, mixed in with aww ’s.

Marcy pulled away a little bit so they could look at Anne properly, cupping her face with both of their smaller hands and wiping away her tears.

“How- when did you get here?” Anne choked out, unable to comprehend what was going on. She couldn’t stop smiling, eyes twinkling with delight.

“A little while ago!” Marcy grinned.

“I thought you said your parents wanted to spend time with you this morning?”

“Yeah! We celebrated last night, and then this morning and for a bit of the afternoon before I left for my flight since it’s not too long!”

“Frog, you and Sasha are sneaky.” Anne giggled.

“And your parents are tooooo,” Sasha smirked as she came down the steps and joined the hug.

“Wait, what?” Anne turned around incredulously to her parents, who were now standing beside the door and giving them all warm smiles.

“Hehe,” Her mom giggled, “surprise.”

“Ohh, thank you all SO MUCH!” Anne squealed again as she spun the three of them around in happiness. They all giggled before heading inside together.

- - - - - -

“So how long are you here for?” Anne asked once they got settled into her room, Marcy sitting on the beanbag and Anne on her bed. Sasha had to get back home shortly after for her own Christmas traditions, but they’d all be able to see each other often this winter break, so that’s fine.

“Uhh, bup bup bup..” Marcy thought for a moment before remembering. “Oh yeah! I have to fly back on the 7th before winter break’s over.”

“So that gives us..” Anne calculated quickly in her head, “Almost two weeks together!” She bounced off the bed in excitement, taking Marcy’s hands and helping them up so they could dance around together.

They both giggled and jumped around Anne’s room, ending when Anne suddenly pulling Marcy into a hug. They closed their eyes in content as she whispered into their ear, “Thank you for coming.. It means more than you’ll ever know.”

Marcy rubbed Anne’s back as they stayed like that for too short a time before they heard Anne’s dad call up to them. “Anne, Marcy, are you two ready for dinner?”

“Yeah dad, we’re on our way!” Anne called back, and they made their way downstairs together.

- - - - - -

The two of them stayed up late that night, whispering and talking about anything and everything like they were little kids again. When they finally got too tired to stay awake any longer, they lay down in Anne’s bed, Marcy lying on their side, facing Anne with a little axolotl plushie. Anne lied on her back, turning her head to see Marcy.

“You still have the plushie I got you,” Anne whispered, sleepiness in her voice, but a warm feeling washing over her.

“I can’t sleep without it..” Marcy admitted, giving her a little smile.

They stared at each other for a moment, just being happy and in each other's presence. They only looked away when they both thought to themselves ..cute. Making them blush and attempt to hide their very flushed faces from each other.

Anne sighed in content and turned her head back to the ceiling, closing her eyes. She felt a warm, small hand take hers, and she opened one eye to look at Marcy, who was apparently staring at her. When they saw this, they immediately panicked and averted their gaze, and Anne could’ve sworn she saw Marcy’s face turn a darker shade of red, even in the dark. She squeezed their hand, running her thumb over their knuckles.

They shyly smiled back up at her, closing their eyes and drifting off to sleep. Anne stared at them for a minute, remembering how adorably cute she’d always thought Marcy was when they were asleep at a sleepover. It was a rare occasion this ever happened, since Marcy was usually the last one to fall asleep, but every so often they grew too tired and were the first one to drift off.

She came to the conclusion that this thought still stood, Marcy was adorably cute while they slept. She could hear their faint breathing from here, growing sleepy when Domino fit herself between the two. She whispered a goodnight to the both of them and drifted off to sleep herself, hand still in hand.
