A couple of kilometers away from Spiral hill village lay a forest. In the middle of said forest was a small glade. The scenery of this glade was nothing short of breathtaking. The glade took the shape of a circle, surrounded by trees and shrubbery. It was closed off, with no clear entrance, giving it the feeling of secrecy. The trees left a small opening near the top, letting in a perfect amount of sunlight.
This spot had become a favorite of Whisper and Tangle, the latter having found it during a morning jog. They had gone there on many occasions, and for numerous reasons. They’ve had picnics there, they’ve gone there to catch some afternoon z’s, and sometimes they go there as a momentary escape from the world, both together and individually. Tonight, however, they were doing none of those things.
They were stargazing.
Both of them lay on the soft grass, next to each other. The wisps were asleep in a big heap, lodged in between the two girls. The small opening at the top of the glade made for a perfect entryway to the stars, shining brightly in the dark of the night.
”Which one do you think that is, Tangle?”
Whisper pointed to a star constellation right above them. Tangle hummed. She did recognize it, she just couldn’t remember the name of it.
”Um, something with dip… Oh! I know! The dipshit, right?”
”…The big dipper…”
”Drat! So close!”
Most of the night had been Tangle unsuccessfully guessing star constellations, but Whisper didn't mind. She was just happy to spend time with Tangle. As a plus, the lemur’s attempts were often amusing.
The glade that Tangle had found was a comfortable escape from the world and all its problems. She loved her friends, no doubt about it, but sometimes it was just nice to share a private moment with the girl she loved. Whisper suddenly felt something brush against her hand, and looked down to discover that Tangle’s hand had come in contact with Whisper’s. The wolf smiled, and intertwined her hand with Tangle’s. After a moment, the lemur spoke.
”Hey Whisper?”
”Mm?”
Tangle changed position, so that she was lying on her side and facing her girlfriend. ”This might be a weird question but… what are you gonna do after all this?”
Whisper turned her head to face her. ”What d’ya mean?”
”Well, Eggman’s gonna kick the bucket eventually and… well, we’re not gonna have to fight for our lives. We can have like, normal jobs ’n’ stuff.”
She paused for a second. ”I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently.”
Whisper hummed, brushing Tangle’s hand with her thumb.
”I’ve thought a bit about it too. Thinking of researching wisps. Maybe visit planet wisp one day.”
Tangle beamed. ”That sounds great, I’m sure you’d make a bunch of groundbreaking discoveries!”
Whisper giggled, and kissed her on the forehead. ”Thanks.”
She looked at Tangle for a few seconds. ”What about you? Anything you’re thinking of doing?”
Tangle scratched her cheek, slightly self-conscious. ”Well, I kind of just want to help people. Being a personal trainer sounds appealing to me, helping people achieve their goals and all that. Maybe it’s a bit stupid, but it seems fun!”
Whisper kissed her on the cheek this time. ”It’s not stupid. You’d be great at it. Plus you’re definitely qualified for it.”
Tangle huffed and sat up, and proceeded to flex her muscles.
”Well, I gotta stay in shape if I want to be able to carry around my beautiful, adorable, gorgeous, fantastic girlfriend!”
She stood up and picked Whisper up with ease. Holding her in a bridal carry, she started to dance around the glade, humming a tune she most likely came up with on the spot. Whisper was unable to hold back a giggle, said giggle eventually cascading into laughter. Tangle continued to frolic around until she ended up falling over, Whisper ending up on top of her. The two of them took a second to get their bearings before looking at each other for a few seconds. They then started cackling at what had just transpired. Whisper rolled off of Tangle, leaving her head on the former’s chest. Eventually the laughter died down, giving Whisper an opportunity to talk.
”I’m not sure what my future will look like, but…”
She looked Tangle in the eyes.
”I’d love for you to be a part of it.”
Tangle stayed silent for a moment, before tears started welling up in her eyes.
”Man, c’mon Whisper! You can’t just say stuff like that out nowhere, you know I’ll start crying!”
Whisper chuckled. The reaction was very Tangle-esque.
”That would be nice though,” the lemur said, wiping the tears from her eyes. ”Being a part of your future, I-I mean.”
Whisper moved closer to Tangle, noses touching.
”I love you.”
”…I love you too, Whisper.”
The two of them kissed, simply sitting there and basking in the joy of each other’s company.
They would visit this glade many times in the future.
