Work Text:

Spiral hill village was under attack again.

It was being assaulted by countless small fragments of frozen water, mercilessly bombarding the village.

In other words, it was snowing. This was very good news to Spiral hill icon Tangle the lemur.

Winter was Tangle’s favorite season, tied with summer, spring and autumn. There were many reasons why Tangle enjoyed this time of the year. Most of them involved being out in the snow. Snowboarding, skiing, frightfully intense snowball fights, amassing an army of snowmen, etcetera.

Tangle loved all of it

Whisper also loved winter, but for different reasons. Due to the cold climate, this was a perfect time to stay indoors and have the coziest time of your life. Hot chocolate, warm blankets, all that jazz.

Luckily, the two girls found enjoyment in both activities, especially when accompanying each other.

Right now, they were cuddling underneath a weighted blanket, simply enjoying the warmth. The wisps were in various locations, mostly in Whisper’s hair or on Tangle’s tail. All of a sudden, though, Tangle had a realization.

”It’s almost christmas!”

She said this out loud, slightly startling Whisper.

”Oh, yeah, I guess so.”

Tangle looked at Whisper, abject horror present on her face.

”You guess ?!”

”…Yeah…?”

Tangle sat up, causing the wisps to wake up in distress.

”Whisper, christmas is like, the best time of the year!”

Whisper smiled at her girlfriend’s enthusiasm, if a little confused about said enthusiasm.

”Tangle, I’m happy you’re excited, but if I’ll be blunt, I don’t see what there is to be excited about.”

Tangle’s face morphed expression once again, this time into shock.

”Have you… never celebrated christmas…?” Her inflection made it sound like not celebrating a winter holiday was a fate worse than death.

”Well, when I was with the diamond cutters, Claire would tell me about christmas, and we would decorate the HQ with a tree during winter. We were always too busy to fully celebrate it, though.” Whisper looked at the diamond cutters’ masks mounted on the wall next to them, saddened at the thought of them.

This did not go unnoticed to Tangle, however. Determined to make her girlfriend feel better, Tangle stood up on one knee, prompting the wisps on her tail to fly over to Whisper, irritated that their fluffy sleeping bag was moving around too much.

”Well, then it’s up to me to make you experience the wonder of christmas!” She stretched her hand out in the air, taking on somewhat of a heroic pose. Fortunately, this had the intended effect, and Whisper snickered at her partner’s overdramatic statement. Tangle sat back down, her amethyst eyes meeting Whisper’s sapphire.

”How does that sound?”

Whisper smiled and pecked Tangle on the cheek. ”That sounds nice.”

”So, first off, we gotta find a tree!”

The two of them, accompanied by the wisps, were trudging through a snow-covered spiral hill, equipped with the comfiest and warmest clothes they could find. Tangle was wearing a scarf that covered up almost all of her face, leaving only the eyes free. Whisper was wearing a coat that went down to her knees, and a beanie she had borrowed from Tangle. The headwear covered up her sensitive ears, but the cold was still biting at most of her body.

She was really looking forward to getting back inside.

Curiously, Tangle seemed to be somewhat unaffected by the cold. Made sense, considering she was pretty much a living ray of sunshine.

Tangle noticed the wolf’s shivering, and ended up wrapping her tail loosely around Whisper’s neck.

”We’ll get this done quickly.” She reassured the canine. ”And when we get home, I can make some hot cocoa!”

The mention of hot cocoa instantly reinvigorated Whisper’s determination, causing her to speedwalk through the snow, using the wispon’s hover function as a sort of snow shovel. This proved to be effective, as the duo quickly made it out of Spiral hill, and were getting closer and closer to the woods.

”Man that thing sure is nifty, huh?” Tangle almost had to yell to be heard over the strong wind that was practically whipping trees around, and was making it considerably harder to walk forwards without fully stagnating. Tangle was now jogging to keep up with Whisper, who had taken the offer of hot chocolate very seriously, as she was almost full-on sprinting now, banishing any snow in her way.

”Mm.” Whisper hummed in response. ”I’m still finding new ways the wisps can be helpful. Sometimes cyan offers to be a nightlight when I do some late-night reading.”

After a few more minutes of the green wisp doing some heavy-lifting, the two of them found themselves in the outskirts of the forests.

”Alright! There should be a good tree somewhere around here!” Tangle said, rubbing her hands together to preserve warmth. Whisper walked over to one of the trees, and simply said ”I like this one.”

Tangle took a look at it. It was quite small, compared to the other trees surrounding it, both in height and width. The size was actually quite convenient, as Tangle had recently gotten into interior decorating, and their apartment didn’t have much space left in it due to the lemur having gone hog wild with her new hobby.

”Let’s go with this one then!” Tangle said in a jolly tone, patting Whisper on the shoulder. She then realized something, facepalming and groaning loudly.

”I forgot to bring an axe!” She yelled, kicking a nearby tree. Unfortunately for Tangle, said tree housed a lot of snow, and the disturbance caused all of it to fall on top of the unlucky lemur. She was quickly pulled out of the pile of snow by Whisper.

”Don’t worry, we don’t need an axe.” She said, brushing off snow that was still stuck to Tangle’s body. She then crouched down and fired her wispon at the tree, a pink saw blade cutting straight through it. The tree was so cleanly cut, in fact, that it didn’t even fall over. It simply landed on the stump, swaying back and forth, threatening to fall over. It was quickly grabbed by Tangle’s tail, and the two of them hauled the tree home as fast as they could.

The second they got home, Tangle threw herself in bed, enveloping herself in numerous blankets, trying to banish the cold from her body as quickly as possible. This left Whisper to place the tree in their living room by herself, but she didn’t mind. She picked a spot in the corner of their living room, next to her beloved armchair, and gently lowered the pine tree to the ground. After successfully adding some Christmas flair to their apartment, Whisper went to check in on her girlfriend. She peeked into their bedroom, only to be met by a Tangle-less fort of pillows and blankets.

”Tangle?”

The aforementioned lemur’s head popped out of the pile of comfiness.

”Mm? Whas’ up?”

”I’m done with the tree.”

Tangle yawned, and put her hands in the air.

”Awesome! We’ll decorate it tomorrow, but for now you could c’mere and cuddle.”

Whisper suddenly realized something fluffy was wrapped around her midsection. She looked down and saw a familiar striped tail, which proceeded to yank her towards the bed. She landed next to Tangle, and the lemur instantly dragged her down into the void of cuddles. Whisper had to admit, it was pretty blissful.

”You guys can come out too, ’s snuggle time.”

Whisper was initially confused at what Tangle had said, but she understood as soon as her wisps popped out of their capsules, chirping happily and settling down at various places in the ”snuggle fort” as Tangle would come to nickname it.

Whisper thought she might as well go to sleep now, since she sure wasn’t getting out of bed. She embraced Tangle, earning a happy squeal from the lemur, and proceeded to drift off to sleep.

About twenty minutes later, Tangle’s eyes shot open.

”Oh no.”

This woke up Whisper as well. The wolf rubbed her eyes tiredly.

”Hm? What’s wrong?”

”I forgot to make hot cocoa.”

Whisper chuckled, and planted a kiss on Tangle’s forehead.

”Don’t worry, we’ll save that for tomorrow.”
