Work Text:
Once upon a time, there was friendship. Shared interests and shared grief, and a loneliness we both felt except when we were together. She listened to me. She sought me out. She may not have understood me, but she was my friend.
Once upon a time, there was love. I do not know if she felt it first or if it was I. It was the way we would greet each other after long absences. We would drown in each others’ arms, and laugh, and talk, and cling to one another as the loneliness of the time apart ebbed away.
Once upon a time, there was desire. I wanted her to be my queen, my world, my everything. She considered it, but did not commit to it. Her brothers spoke against me; I became bitter. My brother would not intervene, he who has all he desires–power, loyalty, and love. Of these, I asked only for love, and it was denied. How can I be blamed for what happened next?
Love remained; she spoke in my favor, even after what I did in spite. Her words went unheard; I was thrust into darkness, lonely once again.
Friendship remained, when I returned. She still came to seek me out, to hear my words, and she listened. But it was not the same, and a time came when I took my vengeance there in Valinor, without meaning ever to return.
Now, there is only silence and darkness and nothing. Here in this Void, with naught but my thoughts–and all of them for her. Once upon a time, when she was almost mine–in another world, another time.
