Chapter 1: Poison?

Chapter Text

Something was off, still. Crackstone was defeated, Tyler had been dealt with too but there was still something that didn’t feel right. Maybe she had just grown too soft. Damn Enid and her weird tactics. She must’ve done something during their time together, she was the only one she spent that much time with. As she sat in the family car, Wednesday just couldn’t stop herself from wondering what could still be wrong. She wasn’t even that upset or interested in the strange texts she had just gotten, they would be looked at properly once she got home. Maybe it could even be a new adventure for her, another mystery for her to solve. No, now there was something else on her mind and she needed to know what.

It took a while to get home, long enough for her to think about what could’ve happened that made her feel like something was wrong. She went through every option she could think of but nothing gave her the right feeling. Once the car parked on the long driveway, Wednesday got out and took her bag, hearing Thing shift in it while also hearing the new phone she got from Xavier fall from the side. Once inside, she looked around at the Interieur. Nothing had changed and she was so glad about that. The last thing she needed was unnecessary colour in her home. Or was it? Did she mind Enid’s colourfulness in the end? Or was she just too focused on the danger and the thrill of it all to notice it?

There was little on her mind yet she didn’t have a silent moment in her head until she arrived in her room and the door shut behind Lurch after he had brought her stuff up. Trying to clear her mind, Wednesday lay down on her bed and closed her eyes, crossing her arms in front of her so she was as comfortable as possible. She remembered the first couple of nights at Nevermore, the way Enid reacted when she saw her asleep like during their first few days and evenings together. Thinking about the girl brought her equivalent of a smile to her face: she stopped frowning. She was lucky no one else was in the room except for her and Thing but she had left the hand in her bag so she was safe from any weird questions.

About twenty minutes passed and all she could do was wonder why she reacted that way when she thought about Enid. She was glad she had made a friend that she didn’t hate and she definitely liked spending time with her but it wasn’t like she had thought of her as someone who could have that much of an effect on her. Wednesday sat up, unfolding her arms and reaching down to grab her bag. Thing almost leapt out when she put the bag down on her bed and opened it but she instead focused on the device that was in there. After taking a second to fully get where everything was, she went to the app that allowed her to text people and clicked on Xavier’s name. “I need Enid’s number.”

He barely expected a text at all, let alone one so soon. Xavier picked his phone up when he saw Wednesday’s name light up on the screen, chuckling a bit to himself. What he saw when he clicked on the notification to read the message though, wasn’t exactly what he had hoped for. He was fine with her asking for Enid’s number, they were best friends and school roommates after all, but he had hoped for a hi or hello. But then again, this was Wednesday Addams, a girl who came to the school and within a couple of weeks destroyed an evil resurrected pilgrim, all while being the most mysterious person he had ever met. “Hey to you too.”

After putting down her phone, Wednesday got up from her bed and started putting her clothes in her closet so she could put the suitcases back sooner as well. A part of her kind of missed Nevermore Academy, the quiet dorm she shared with the cute blonde. The second that thought popped into her mind, she stood still and stared at the pair of socks she was holding. It was unusual at the very least for her to have thoughts about someone that didn’t include hearing their screams of pain but to suddenly think of Enid as cute really blew her mind. She put the pair of socks down and walked back to her bed, frowning once again and sitting down. It was at that moment that she got a text back from Xavier. It took everything she had not to roll her eyes but she still needed his help so she just responded. “Hi. You didn’t put Enid’s number in the phone. Can I have it?”

When his screen lit up again, he wasn’t exactly surprised to see that the girl wasn’t backing away from her first request. Xavier went to his contact list, copied Enid’s number and sent it to Wednesday before typing a second message to her. “Here you go. That’s Enid’s number. Let me know if you need anything else or just want to talk.” He knew she wouldn’t pick him up on the last part of his offer, it was Wednesday he was talking to and she didn’t engage in conversation unless she had to or it was of use to her.

A quick “Thank you” was all the reply she sent Xavier once he sent Enid’s number. It was weird. No matter how calculated and smart she was, she felt dumb at a moment like this. With everything she needed to talk to her best friend, she suddenly found herself unsure of what to say. Maybe she had thought it would take longer to get the number or something else was going to happen that stopped her from texting her immediately, but it went way easier than she had assumed it would. Wednesday lay down on her bed again, relaxing a little bit while thinking about the blonde and what to say to her.

Suddenly being without Wednesday after weeks of spending every day with her felt really weird. Enid didn’t like it and even though she knew she’d have to get used to it because classes were suspended for the rest of the semester and she wouldn’t be able to spend every day with her during school vacations, she still missed her a lot. She just wondered if she missed her too or if she was off having fun and forgetting about her. She wasn’t sure why she cared so much. Of course, she cared about her friend but there was something else going on too. Trying not to think about it too much, Enid walked over to the desk in her room, the only peace she had. Especially since she finally wolfed out and her parents were trying to ask her a bunch of things.

While laying on her bed and thinking about Enid, she started feeling weird. She got a strange feeling in her stomach and for a second, she almost thought she felt her heartbeat. Maybe the reason why she couldn’t stop thinking about her was that her best friend had poisoned her. It was probably during the hug, those things were usually torturous but she actually kind of liked it when Enid hugged her. Maybe it was before then after all? Either way, she respected the blonde for attempting it. Wednesday took her phone after opening her eyes and started typing in the, for now, empty chat with her best friend. “Hello Enid. This is Wednesday.”

With her headphones on to silence the sounds of her family moving around downstairs, she was doodling on a piece of paper, unsure what to do. She had a bunch of things she had wanted to do at Nevermore that she couldn’t do now until the start of the next semester. Her attention was drawn to her phone when it lit up and showed that she had a text from an unknown number. Slightly frowning because she hadn’t given her number out to anyone, she picked the device up and unlocked it. She instantly smiled when she read the message, saving the number in her phone as “Wednesday <3” without thinking much about it. Once done, Enid went back to the text and answered her. “Hi! I thought you didn’t like technology. When did you get the phone?”

There it was again. When she saw the screen of her phone light up and the notification read that she had a new text from Enid, she felt it again, that weird feeling in her stomach. Were the effects of the poison linked to when she thought of her or interacted with her? No, it couldn’t be possible, she knew all the poisons there were and none were that special. She made a mental note to go find something to slow the poison down or cure her of it but that would be something she’d do later. Wednesday clicked the text open and read it, almost feeling her heart beat again. “Xavier gave it to me before I left Nevermore grounds. He said it was so we could keep in contact and I made him give me your number.”

She didn’t take her eyes off her screen for even a second after sending Wednesday a text. It felt so weird to be able to text her but it was a good kind of weird, she got excited from it. When a new, longer text showed up, she read it and chuckled a bit. Of course Xavier would be the one to buy her a phone and tell her it’s so they could keep in contact. But it was also really nice to know that on the same day as getting the phone, she made Xavier give her her number. It made her feel special. Just thinking about it made her happier than ever and she couldn’t stop smiling. Enid got up from her chair and hopped on her bed, texting her back. “Of course you did! I’m really glad you have a phone now, Wednesday!!” She stared at the screen for a second before sending another text. “I already miss you!”

After sending her text, Wednesday got up from her bed and walked down the many stairs to go to find one of her parents. As she walked into the living room, she saw Morticia sitting in one of the chairs and looking at the fireplace with a smile on her face. The young girl stood in front of her and looked at her for a couple of seconds. “Hello, mother. I believe I’ve been poisoned and I believe Enid did it. Do we have any antidotes against poisons with effects that only happen when one person comes up in the victim’s mind?” She lifted the phone when she got a new text, reading it and feeling it all again. “There it is.” She quickly texted her back, not letting her possible demise stop her from having a conversation. “We will be able to talk now if something happens. Or when we’re back at Nevermore.” She sent it right after getting the second text. For a split second, her cheeks warmed up but by the time her mother turned to look at her again, it was gone.

“Is that so? She didn’t really seem like a poison kind of person when we met her. Maybe more of a slashing type of person. Oh, well. What are your symptoms, darling.” Morticia put her drink down but when she turned back to look at her daughter, she was holding a phone in her hand and she was typing on it. This was definitely something new and she wanted to ask about it but she figured they’d get to talk once they found an antidote. Morticia got up and started walking out of the living room and to a door. Once she opened the door, she walked into a small room with all kinds of antidotes.

Still unable to look away from her phone, Enid had even taken her headphones off and stopped her music so she could focus on the texts she got. She really wasn’t sure why she was so excited by Wednesday getting a phone. Maybe she was just happy that she could talk to one of her best friends now but it felt like there was more and she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. She saw the text she got from Wednesday and jumped up, sitting on her bed instead of laying down. Did she just say “we” when talking about next semester at Nevermore? Was there a chance that she’d get to room with her again? Enid got off her bed, put a chair in front of her door for maximum privacy and lay back down. “Back at Nevermore? You’re coming back?? YES!!”

As her mother got up and started walking towards the antidote room, Wednesday followed along and thought about her symptoms for a second. “Well, I have a strange feeling in my stomach. I’ve never been poisoned like this before. And I think it’s messing with my body in more ways than one. Earlier, I almost felt a heartbeat.” She saw the screen of her phone light up even though her hands went down by her legs and frowned a bit because the effects were there again. “I also believe it’s getting stronger.” She raised her phone again and felt her frown fade away when she saw the clear excitement in her best friend’s message, making her respond immediately. “I am. I seem to have grown fond of the school and some people there.”

Morticia looked back at her daughter as she explained what her symptoms were, trying to think of a poison that could do that. There were lots, of course, and she was silently judging Enid for picking a poison that only did those two things in the early stages of its effect. When she heard Wednesday say that it was getting stronger as she looked at her phone, she started doubting that her daughter was poisoned after all. Still, she kept searching the bottles and vials for something that could cause those effects and be controlled but after a minute or so, she turned to the girl again. “Are you talking to Enid now? Does it happen when she sends you a message?”

She was almost jumping with excitement after sending her text, running downstairs and grabbing some water before going up to her room again. Enid put her chair by the door once more, laying down with her phone in her hand. She took a sip of her drink, almost choking on it when her screen lit up with the notification of Wednesday’s text. She put her glass down, opened it and smiled widely when she read it. This was the best news she had ever gotten and the past day had been filled with good news. Trying to type without making too many mistakes, the blonde responded to her text. “I’m so happy you decided to come back!! I wouldn’t be able to survive Ophelia Hall without you. You’re an amazing roomie, Wednesday!”

Right before answering her mother’s question, she looked down to read Enid’s new text. Her frown faded again but she brought it back once she was done reading, not wanting Morticia to see her without it. She lowered her phone again and nodded. “Yes, Mother, I am. Whenever she sends me a text, I get the weird feeling in my stomach and it almost makes me feel my heartbeat. Are you looking for a specific antidote?” She walked close to one of the shelves but responded to Enid before she started looking. “You tortured me and I appreciate that.” She felt like it wasn’t sincere enough so she unlocked her phone again and typed a second message. “I like being your roommate.”

A smile rested on her face as she heard what Wednesday had to say about when her symptoms showed up. Morticia tried to stay calm but she was happy for her daughter so she carefully stepped away from the shelves. “Wednesday, dear, there is no antidote for what you have. Come, we can talk in the other room.” With a slight tap against the girl’s shoulder, Morticia walked away from the vials and bottles, making her way to the living room once more. Once she was back to sitting on the couch and looking at the fire, she tried to think of a way to tell Wednesday what she was feeling without pushing her to it.

She giggled a bit when she read Wednesday’s first text, going to respond to her when the second text came in. Her eyes widened and in a split second, she went from reading the couple of words to throwing her phone away. Luckily for her, the rug in her room was soft enough for the device to be fine even though it had just gotten thrown away with some decent force. Her cheeks flushed a dark red and she felt giddy, grabbing her stomach when she felt tingles in it. She curled up a bit, holding her knees close to her chest while smiling. Wednesday Addams, the girl who never smiled and tried to get out of the school when she first got there so she wouldn’t have to spend time with people, really just said she liked being roommates with her. Enid liked what her best friend’s words did to her.

As she walked behind her mother to the other room so they could talk, undoubtedly about her upcoming demise, Wednesday unlocked her phone for a second to see if she had gotten a response from Enid yet. When all she saw was that her text was read but she still hadn’t gotten anything back, she frowned slightly. Maybe she shouldn’t have said that second thing, it seemed weird now that she thought of it. Before she could think about it anymore, she heard her mother speak again. Quickly putting the device in one of her pockets, Wednesday sat down on the couch so she could listen to what Morticia had to say.

There was definitely something weird about having to have this talk with Wednesday. She never thought she’d have a conversation with her about feelings and the more she watched her, the more she was sure of it. But here they were anyway, about to talk about something like love while trying to keep her engaged in the topic. “Wednesday, dear, I don’t think your friend poisoned you. There is no antidote because there is no poison that does things like that. But there is something else.” She couldn’t help but smile. She wanted her little girl to be happy and she was glad that it was with someone as kind of smart as Enid.

It was so weird. She hadn’t expected to act like this over a text from Wednesday but reading it brought so much joy to her and she loved that she got to read it, knowing who sent it. With a smile on her face that she couldn’t wipe away under any circumstances, Enid got up from her bed and walked over to where her phone had landed. She picked it up, checking to see if it had any damages or if Wednesday had sent a third text by any chance. Not seeing anything other than the wonderful second one, her blush only got darker and she sat back down on her bed. It took her some time but she managed to find something to text her. “I love being your roommate too, Wednesday! You’re the best roomie I could’ve ever asked for. It’ll be hell not seeing you for so long!”

She felt a buzz in her pocket after sitting down and listening to her mother for a bit, about to answer the woman on how ridiculous it sounded but she decided to first see if she got a text from Enid. She took her phone out, unlocked it and felt her frown disappear once again. It was cute of the other girl to say all of that, though she’d never admit to thinking that. Wednesday quickly typed up a reply and sent it. “No, Hell would be enjoyable. Not seeing you for that long would be bad torture.” She put her phone next to her on the couch and looked up at Morticia again, thinking about what she had just told her. “If not poison, then what is it, Mother? What explanation is there for the symptoms I’ve been showing? Is it a curse, a ritual, a doll?”

A chuckle escaped her lips when she saw her daughter reach for her phone and ignore her to answer a text. She didn’t often get to see this side of her so it was nice that she wanted to share it with her, even though she came to her about poison at first. Morticia reached over, putting her soft, cold hand on Wednesday’s hand and smiling at her. “Let me tell you a story. Back when I first went to Nevermore and I met your father, I felt the exact same way. Tingles, heart beating harder than normal, thinking about him almost non-stop. Do you think maybe you’ve got a crush on your friend?” She tried to look as supportive as possible, ready to do whatever her little girl needed to be happy.

She squealed when she got Wednesday’s new text and read it, almost throwing her phone again but she caught it with her other hand just in time. Enid felt herself shake while reading it again. The girl really had her in a chokehold and she loved it. She wanted so badly to be able to run to her but she had no idea where the Addams house was and it was probably incredibly far away. She couldn’t think of what to say so she just rested on her bed, closing her eyes before opening them again when she knew what to text her. “It definitely would be bad torture. It’ll be bad torture not seeing you until next semester.” Maybe if things went right, she could invite Wednesday over while they had no school.

Wednesday listened to what her mother had to say and when she suggested that she might have a crush on Enid, she was more than surprised. If she showed emotions, she would’ve really raised her eyebrows but instead, she just got up and took her phone. “Thank you, Mother.” She turned on her heels and walked towards the stairs, making her way back to her room all while thinking about what she had just been told. Could it be that she wasn’t actually poisoned but she just felt things? It was weird and she’d have to think about it once she was alone. She locked her door, laying back down on her bed just in time to get the text from Enid. “It will be. Could I interest you in making plans together?” She felt weird saying it, she rarely even hung out or made plans with her family members, let alone with a friend.

It took some time but soon enough, she got a text back from Wednesday. Having calmed down in the time between sending her text and getting a response, she really cursed how adorable and perfect her best friend was when she read her text and she instantly got tingles again. Her cheeks turned a dark red again, making the pink in her hair seem as if it was just normal blonde in comparison with her blush. “I’d love that! You can come here a couple of times and I’ll visit you a couple of times. I really couldn’t go that long without seeing you, Wednesday. It would be really, really, really bad torture.”

She liked seeing Enid react like that to her offer, it made her… Well, she could only describe it as happy. She felt joy in reading her texts and she didn’t mind feeling that way. Maybe there was some truth to what her mother had said after all. She still wasn’t going to admit it to her and she was only going to act on her feelings if her best friend showed clear signs of liking her back but meeting up when they had no school seemed like a great first start. She took her phone again and texted back. “The worst. Are you busy the week after next week? I will come pick you up with Lurch and you can stay here for a while. If you’d like.” She got up and took her typewriter out, clicking the case open and placing it on her desk while waiting for a response from the blonde.

She let out a loud squeal, probably a bit too loud but she really didn’t care. Wednesday invited her over and she even said she could stay with her for a while. She tried to type but every word ended up becoming a mix between the word and random keysmashing so she put her phone down and tried to calm herself a bit. Enid rested her head on her pillow but even laying down in silence wasn’t enough to calm her down. Eventually, she sat up again and started typing very slowly until she had her message ready to send. “I’d love to! My parents were going to send me on a camp for most of the summer and they didn’t have any plans for us now anyway because they thought we’d still be in school. I can stay as long as you’ll tolerate me and then we can switch a couple of times! I’m so excited!! I look forward to it. Thank you, Wednesday <3”

She was content as she put an empty sheet of paper in her typewriter. When the soft ding sounded that alerted her of a new text, she looked at it and read the couple of sentences she had been sent. Who knew a string of words could make her feel so good? “I look forward to it as well.” She started writing, suddenly full of ideas for something new.
