Forget Me Not

Summary:

Sunk into terrible grief after the loss of his beloved woman, Saul closes his eyes and receives a surprise visit in his dreams.

Work Text:

As he used to do tirelessly every night since the first day of his life, Saul closed his eyes. Another day had passed, and another would come right after night. A new one without Farah. He sighed, disappointed. What did he expect after six months? She was dead, gone forever, and he had not told her goodbye. Rosalind had torn her away from him with unspeakable cruelty. Since that fateful afternoon, Saul no longer expected anything from life, for he had lost the only human being who made him happy in all circumstances, whose smile had always warmed his heart.

"If only I had been able to prevent that bitch from harming you...," he murmured regretfully, with tears in his eyes. "You'd still be alive..."

He quickly fell into a deep sleep and, as if by magic, the benevolent face of the one he admired so much appeared to him, bathed in a warm golden light, like the Madonna.

"I'm still alive, Saul," she whispered with a knowing smile.

With a comforting air, she drew closer to her friend, until her light brown hair with its shimmering reflections wrapped around him, from his back to his head, creating a protective bubble, a world of which they were the only inhabitants.

"But...you're dead, Fa," he protested in a soft voice, bringing his hand to the cheek of the one he loved to caress it, to make sure she was real.

The mind fairy let him do so and focused her enigmatic gaze on his.

"Only the ones who are forgotten really die," she replied with a touch of nostalgia in her voice.

Her eyes, for their part, had lit up with a sparkle of love and joy.

"I live in the hearts of the ones who love me, where I belong, so as long as you think of me, I will live," she assured him, running her fingers along the back of her Specialist's neck.

The latter, upset by this unexpected moment, could not help but wrap his right arm around her waist to draw her passionately to him. He didn't know if he would ever see her again, or even how much longer this surreal magic would last. He had to do it now.

"I love you, Fa, I miss you so much, angel," he admitted, pulling a strand away from her face to etch it one last time in his mind, choked up.

His fairy gently ran her long, slender fingers along his jaw, as if it were made of glass, and tenderly placed her lips on his. The Specialist enjoyed the kiss with his eyes open, fearing that she would disappear if he were unfortunate enough to close his eyelids for a split second. He wanted this unreal moment to never end, for his angel to stay with him for eternity. He wanted to love her, to breathe her, to caress her and kiss her again and again until he passed away because she had become his entire world. But the bell had already tolled and death had come to pluck her like a rose cut at the end of summer.

Suddenly she ended their kiss with subtlety and thoughtfulness, perhaps to avoid hurting him. He stared at her for a moment, heartbroken. She was smiling at him, with her own pure heart, and her eternal kindness, which was radiating from her whole being.

"I love you too, Saul, don't ever forget that," she said in a tone of mixed gravity and serenity. "Don't ever forget me..."

As the image of her sweet face was blurring and slowly fading in her lover's mind, the fairy's voice grew more and more distant until it became a mere echo, and these words were the last he heard from her.
Saul opened his eyes and smiled blissfully. Farah had given him a sign, and this time he had been able to tell her his feelings, which were mutual, and to bid her farewell. One day he would join her in that heaven where she was waiting for him.
